- Chapter 6 - CompuServe Mail
-
- As a CompuServe member, you can send and receive electronic
- messages, or "mail," to and from other members. Your on-line
- "mailbox" can receive mail 24 hours a day and can hold up to 100
- mail messages.
-
- If you signed up for CompuServe's "Standard Pricing Plan", your
- basic monthly membership entitles you to send several dozen
- CompuServe Mail messages without any fees and free of connect-
- time charges. You can also use a number of interconnected
- systems like MCI Mail, faxes, Internet, and postal service hard-
- copy; although they carry surcharges. For more information,
- consult your CompuServe documentation, or type GO MAILRATES at
- any CompuServe prompt (See Chapter 10, Connecting to CompuServe).
-
- Important Note: If you have not followed the instructions in
- Chapter 3 for Configuring Golden CommPass and CompuServe, you
- must do so now or Golden CommPass won't work!
-
- There is an important difference between Mail and forum messages.
- Although the steps to process almost every Mail option (reading,
- writing, sending, replying, etc.) are followed in the same manner
- as with Forum Messages, Mail is a service unto itself, and is
- totally private. Forum Messages are usually "public"; posted in
- forum message sections to be read by any and all members (you
- can, however, post a private message on some forums-see Chapter
- 12, Message Window, Post); and as we've noted above, you can send
- Mail to people who are not CompuServe members.
-
- This chapter contains instructions for procedures unique to Mail.
- Procedures not covered here are essentially identical to those
- for Forum Messages. See Chapters 4 and 5 and substitute the word
- "Mail" wherever you see the word "Message."
-
-
- Configure CompuServe Mail Options
-
- Golden CommPass offers a number of ways to customize the use of
- CompuServe Mail. You can change the following options whenever
- you like.
-
- From the Main Window,
-
- 1. Choose Services/CompuServe Mail.
-
- 2. Choose Options.

-
- [Figure 53 - Mail Options Dialog]
-
- Signature
-
- Use this option to automatically put a signature on every mail
- message you write.
-
- Click in the "Signature" entry field and type your signature
- the way you would like it to appear at the end of your
- message.
-
- You can use the vertical "or bar" (|) when defining your
- signature to skip to the next line in the signature. For
- example:
-
- Golden|CommPass
-
- will produce a signature of:
-
- Golden
- CommPass
-
- Note: You cannot use the signature option unless you have
- specified a global signature (see Chapter 11, Main Window,
- Forums notebook).
-
- Mail file disposition
-
- Use this option to save all your mail in one file, or discard
- prior mail every time new mail arrives.
-
- Click on "Overwrite" or "Append" to overwrite or append your
- new mail.
- Gateway
-
- Use this option to tell Golden CommPass whether your User ID is
- from CompuServe or ZiffNet.
-
-
- Change this entry only if your User ID was issued by
- ZiffNet. If it was, click on the arrow in the drop-down
- list box and click on ZNT.

-
-
-
-
-
-
- Save outbox
-
- "Mail" check box:
-
- Click on "Mail" if you want to save copies of your
- outgoing (new or reply) Mail. A copy will be saved in
- your MAIL.SAV file.
-
- "Save with messages" check box:
-
- Click on "Save with messages" if you want to save
- copies of your outgoing (new or reply) Mail in the
- same file as your incoming Mail (in the MAIL.MSG
- file).
-
- "Save copy when" radio buttons:
-
- Click on "Composed" to save a copy of your mail when
- you post the mail in Golden CommPass.
-
- Click on "Uploaded" to defer saving the copy of your
- mail until it is actually uploaded to CompuServe.
-
- Select
-
- If this option is checked, Mail is "selected". Every time Golden
- CommPass calls CompuServe it will check the Mail.
-
- When you select Connect/Start new session, Golden CommPass will
- retrieve any mail in your CompuServe mailbox, as well as upload
- any mail messages you have written.
-
- When you select Connect/Continue session, Golden CommPass will
- only upload mail messages you have written.
-
- If this option is not checked, Golden CommPass will disregard
- CompuServe mail.
-
- Unread
-
- This flag, like the forum unread state flag, is used to indicate
- that you have messages to read.
-
- Save mail
-
- If this option is selected, PROGRAMNAME will not delete CompuServe
- mail messages after they have been read. Instead, they will be
- saved on CompuServe. This means that the next time you retrieve
- your mail from CompuServe, the older mail messages will still be
- there, and will be downloaded again.
-
-
-
- Golden CommPass CompuServe Mail - 58
-
-
-
-
-
- Use B+ Protocol
-
- Selecting this option will force Golden CommPass to create a
- temporary file with the contents of the message to be uploaded,
- and then use the B+ file transfer protocol to upload the
- temporary file. This file will be transmitted as a normal
-
- CompuServe MAIL message. This is a good option to select if you
- have regular problems with noisy telephone lines.
-
- Upload as Latin-1
-
- Selecting this option will upload all mail messages using the
- Latin-1 character set.
-
-
- Retrieve Your Mail
-
- The first thing Golden CommPass does when you connect to
- CompuServe at the start of your session is check to see if you
- have any mail (unless mail is not selected).
-
-
-
- [Figure 54 - Start Communication (Start new session) Dialog]
-
- If you have mail waiting, Golden CommPass will retrieve it and
- place a "Read MAIL" closed book object in the Main Window, while
- it continues processing any other forums you may have selected.
-
-
- Read Mail
-
-
- Read New Mail
-
- A closed book object with "Read MAIL" will be in the Main Window.
-
- 1. Double-click on the closed book.

- instructions are the same as those for "Search for Keyword(s)" in
- Chapter 5, Forums - Advanced.
-
-

- know. You can also write to anyone on AT&T Easylink, AT&T Mail,

- Mail, Telex or TWX, and X.400.

- Press SHIFT+INSERT in the "To" entry field.
-
- If you have entered a comment for your recipient in your
- Address Book, and that comment is either preceded by an
- equals sign or enclosed in parentheses,
-
- Type "=comment" or "(comment)" in the "To" field.
- Press your TAB key.
-
- Your recipient's address will appear in the "To" entry
- field, and your cursor will jump to the "Subject" entry
- field.
- 4. Type a subject name of up to 40 characters.

- carbons as you like.
-
- To add carbon copies,
-
- 1. Click on the cc button.
- 2. Highlight all the recipients you want.
- 3. Click on the cc button again.
-
- Important Note: You can only type one name and User ID in the
- "cc" or "bcc" entry field. All other recipient names and User
- IDs must come from the Address Book.
-
- To add blind carbon copies,
-
- 1. Click on the bcc button.
- 2. Highlight all the recipients you want.
- 3. Click on the bcc button again.

- Golden CommPass CompuServe Mail - 61
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Important Note: CompuServe Mail provides the capability to
- include a distribution list as part of the message. The default
- is to show the distribution list. If you have not configured
- Golden CommPass and CompuServe as described in Chapter 3, your
- CompuServe Mail options may be set to show the distribution list,
- in which case the copies will not be "blind".
-
- Golden CommPass can send as many copies of a message as you like,
- rather than CompuServe's limit of 50 copies. It does this by
- creating multiple copies of the mail message, each with up to 50
- copies.
-
- 6. Click OK.
-
- You'll see a Message Window.
-
- 7. Write your Mail message.
- Follow the typing guidelines as described in Chapter 4,

-
- 4. Type over *.* with the file name.
-
- If the file resides in a directory other than the default

- any part of the file name (using * where appropriate) in the
- "File Name" entry field (see note below).

- Golden CommPass CompuServe Mail - 62
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- 5. Click on the ASCII or Binary "Protocol" radio button.
- You should only use ASCII if you are sending a "plain text"
- file. If you are sending any other type of file, we
- recommend that you send it using the Binary protocol.
-
- Important Note: Never use the ASCII protocol to send an
- online.log from a Golden CommPass session.
-
- 6. Click OK.
-
- The Upload file dialog will close and you'll see a message that
- says "File attached: (file name)"
-
- 7. Click OK to return to the Message Window.
-
- Note: When receiving binary mail, Golden CommPass will attempt to
- use the subject name as the file name. However, not all
- CompuServe navigation programs are capable of this, so you may
- want to include the original file name in your Mail message so
- that your recipient can change the file name, if desired.
-
- Send File
-
- Use this option to send an ASCII or Binary file as Mail, without
- an accompanying message.
-

- or the "Binary" radio button for any other file.
