- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Page Layout ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Page Layout settings allow you to specify how you want the pages to be layed
- out on each physical piece of paper. You may have one to twenty images across
- the page, and one to twenty images down the page.
-
- Radio buttons allow you to select from the four most commonly used formats: one
- or two across or one or two images down. If you want other arrangements,
- select the Custom format. Using the custom format, you may specify the number
- of pages across and the number down the page.
-
- Duplex (two-sided) printing is also supported on printers that are capable of
- duplex printing (HP LaserJet III-D and similar printers). To select two-sided
- printing, go to the Printer page and select Setup there.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Landscape Two-Up Layout ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Two-up, landscape layout is one of the most commonly used page layouts for
- program listings and other 80-column text.
-
- If this option is disabled, you have selected a device font and set portrait
- orientation in the printer setup dialog.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Portrait One-Up Layout ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Plain portrait (one-up) layout prints one page on one sheet of paper.
-
- If this option is disabled, you have selected a device font and set landscape
- orientation in the printer setup dialog.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Portrait Two-Up Layout ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Portrait two-up layout has two page images arranged vertically on the page.
- This format is useful for printing reports with many columns of data. For
- reports with even more columns, consider the 1-up landscape layout.
-
- If this option is disabled, you have selected a device font and set landscape
- orientation in the printer setup dialog.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Landscape One-Up Layout ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Used in combination with a font with a small point size, this layout will allow
- you to print hundreds of characters on each line. Try using legal size paper
- to print an even greater number of characters.
-
- If this option is disabled, you have selected a device font and set portrait
- orientation in the printer setup dialog.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Custom Layout ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- If one of the four supplied layouts will not suit your needs, invent your own
- by selecting a custom layout. Here you may specify whether the page is to be
- printed in landscape or portrait mode, and the number of images (up to 20) that
- are to be printed across the page and the number to be printed down the page.
-
- For an example of when this might be useful, consider a text file of names, all
- of which are under 30 characters long. You could specify a custom format that
- printed 10 columns across the page, and one down, in landscape mode. This
- would give you a multi-column list of names.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Landscape Layout ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- When defining a custom layout, press this button to have the paper printed in
- landscape mode.
-
- If you have selected a Custom Layout and this option is disabled, you have
- selected a device font and set portrait orientation in the printer setup
- dialog.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Portrait Layout ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- When defining a custom layout, press this button to have the paper printed in
- portrait mode.
-
- If you have selected a Custom Layout and this option is disabled, you have
- selected a device font and set landscape orientation in the printer setup
- dialog.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Number of Pages Horizontally ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- When defining a custom layout, use this spin button to set the number of page
- images to be printed on each sheet horizontally across the page.
-
- The number of characters that can be printed on each line will depend on your
- printer, the font selected, and framing and other options. You will probably
- need to experiment with these values to find the combination that suits you
- best.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 10. Number of Pages Vertically ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- When defining a custom layout, use this spin button to set the number of page
- images to be printed on each sheet vertically down the page.
-
- The number of lines that can be printed in each page image will depend on your
- printer, the font selected, and framing and other options. You will probably
- need to experiment with these values to find the combination that suits you
- best.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11. Printer Selection ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 17. Wrap Long Lines ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Check this box if you want lines in your input file that are longer than can be
- printed on one line on the printer to be wrapped around and printed on
- successive lines. If you do not check this box, long lines will be truncated
- and you will not see the right end of lines that are too long to be printed in
- a page image.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 18. Expand Tabs ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Specify here the spacing between tab positions for tab characters contained in
- the input file being printed. Press the up and down arrow keys to change the
- value in this field. The minimum spacing between tab positions is one
- character, and the maximum is sixteen characters.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 19. Confirmation Dialog ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- When you print a file, either from the command line or by dragging a file to
- the Prt2Up program object, Prt2Up either just prints the file according to the
- settings you defined previously, or you can ask it first to present you with a
- print dialog.
-
- If you check this confirmation box, Prt2Up will always display the Print Dialog
- before starting to print files. This dialog will allow you to change the
- number of copies to be printed and to change any other Prt2Up settings.
-
- If you do not check this box, Prt2Up will print the file or files using the
- last settings you set when you started Prt2Up without a file name.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 20. Page Margins ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Each physical page has a margin between the edge of the paper and the area in
- which the page images are printed. The default is to leave one-half inch of
- white space between the edge of the page and the printed area. You may adjust
- the margin at each edge as desired.
-
- Some printers have a minimum margin. For example, it is not possible to
- printer closer than about 0.2 inches to the edge of the paper using an HP
- LaserJet printer. The exact minimum margin varies with each printer model.
- Prt2Up will not let you set a margin less than the printer and/or printer
- driver will allow.
-
- If you are using a dot matrix or other printer with adjustable forms, and if
- the printed output does not have the margins you requested here, you should
- adjust the paper in the printer so that the margins used are the same as the
- ones you requested here. The paper should now be positioned properly for any
- other OS/2 Presentation Manager applications, as Prt2Up uses the same standard
- OS/2 printer drivers that other applications use.

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 31. Planned Features ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- The only major function currently planned for the final release but not yet
- implemented is "pseudo-duplex" printing. This function will allow printing on
- both sides of the paper by passing the paper through the printer twice.
-
- I am personally reluctant to provide this option, as many laser printer
- manufacturers recommend not doing that on a printer not designed for duplex
- support. For example, doing this on an HP LaserJet series II printer will
- result in smudging that is difficult to clear up. However, the market probably
- demands this feature, so it will be added.
-
- I would appreciate any suggestions on how to make this utility more useful.
- Here are some of the suggestions on the list, in no particular order.
-
- o Number lines in each file, or on each page.
-
- o Support mainframe ANSI carriage control characters (column 1 with 1, 0, -,
- +). Carriage control would probably be mutually exclusive with wrapping of
- long lines. This would benefit people trying to print output generated on
- mainframes but have little use for people using output generated by PC
- programs.
-
- o If .LONGNAME EA exists for a file, print that name, or as much of that name
- as will fit on a line.
-
- o Support font style and emphasis options.
-
- o Add Default button to each notebook page. (dcb)
-
- o Add Undo button to each notebook page.
-
- o Margin spinbuttons should not spin around end of range.
-
- o Support multiple INI files, using either a command line parameter or a
- current directory approach.
-
- Far Future Ehancements
-
- The following features have been suggested for a future version. They will
- not be implemented in the first release.
-
- o Support 'book' mode, allowing the user to cut a stack of paper in half and
- have the first and last halves of a book.
-
- o Support printing of 'index tabs.' There are some design layout problems
- associated with HPFS long names.
-
- o Support proportional fonts in some way. It's not really clear how to do
- this, as it involves intelligent reformatting of the text in the file being
- printed.
-
-

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 35. Known Problems ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Known problems with Prt2Up are as follows. My intention is to fix these
- problems, though some minor ones may become restrictions or future
- enhancements.
-
- o With some size combinations, the frame can be cut off and not painted.
-
- o Footer collides with text if Full Frame is not selected and using a
- full-height page image.
-
- o Program icon is not attractive on 8514 display.
-
- o Help is incomplete. Not all help has been written. Help is not available
- for font dialog.
-
- o If you press Enter or Esc on Font notebook page, font dialog is dismissed.
- These keys will be blocked.
-
- o Margins on the printed page do not match the settings on LJ III-D in
- landscape mode. Portrait mode margins are fine. The error is in the range
- of 1/10".
-
- o If you change selected printers, and then go to the Margins page, the
- minimum margins have not been adjusted to reflect the new printer.
-
- o If you change printer, printer settings, or font, and the last selected
- layout is no longer valid, it is not automatically reset to a valid value.
-
- o An extra blank page is sometimes generated at the end of the printout.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 36. Permanent Restrictions ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- The following restrictions are expected to be permanent:
-
- o When run from a command line, the command window disappears because Prt2Up
- is a PM application. This will be fixed so that if Settings notebook is not
- required, no focus change occurs. Fixing this will apparently require a
- separate shell program. For now, we'll supply a batch file to start prt2up
- in the background.
-
- o The amount of space left at the bottom of a frame may be greater than the
- amount at the top of the frame. This is a consequence of design trade-offs.
- I decided that the frame should always have exactly the same positioning and
- size, independent of font size chosen. The frame size is related to the
- page size and the number of page images requested. The font height may not
- divide an integral number of times into the frame dimension, thus leaving a
- variable amount of space at the bottom of the frame.
-
- I decided this was better than other alternatives, such as adjusting the
- font height to match the frame size (the "Procrustrean solution").
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 37. History ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Problems Fixed and Features Added in 0.88
-
- o Beta defined as running through December 31
-
- o Expiration date code disabled.
-
- o Much more help added.

-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 38. About Prt2Up ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- General information about Prt2Up
-
- Prt2Up is a OS/2 2.0 print utility for printing multiple page images on a
- single sheet of paper. This program is intended to print typical documentation
- and read.me files -- text files normally prepared for monospaced printing.
- Both scalable and device monospaced fonts are supported. HPFS long names are
- supported.
-
- Prt2Up is a true, 32-bit, PM application. It should support printing, in any
- supported layout, to any printer with a PM driver. OS/2 2.0 or later is
- required. As a full PM application, network printer support is enabled. If a
- copy or shadow of a network printer is on the desktop, that printer can be used
- by Prt2Up. You can print on both sides of the paper if you have a printer that
- supports duplex printing. (Pseudo-duplex printing under software control will
- be supported in a later release.)

-
- To print files from the workplace shell, and drag files to the Prt2Up program
- object.
-
- In this version, only files can be dragged to Prt2Up. In a later version, you
- will be able to drag other types of objects.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 40. Installing Prt2Up ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- To install Prt2Up, unzip the ZIP file into a directory, use CD to make that the
- current directory, and type INSTALL.
-
- To install Prt2Up manually, copy PRT2UP.EXE, PRT2UP.HLP, and PRT2.CMD to any
- directory included in your PATH statement. Create a program object for
- PRT2UP.EXE.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 41. Setting Options ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Prt2Up has many options, which you may set in its Settings notebook. You may
- also save printer properties for use with Prt2Up. These options are saved in a
- PRT2UP.INI file. This file resides in the same directory as PRT2UP.EXE.
-
- To open the Settings notebook, double click on the Prt2Up object on the
- desktop. Or, type "PRT2UP" at an OS/2 command prompt without any parameters
- following the program name.
-
- Prt2Up will open its settings notebook. You should review the parameters in
- this settings notebook and set the ones you wish to keep.
-
- Prt2Up will optionally allow you to modify these settings every time you print
- a file. If you want to do that, set the Confirmation Dialog checkbox.
-
- If you want to keep more than one Prt2Up configuration, in this release you
- will need to make copies of both PRT2UP.EXE, PRT2UP.HLP, and PRT2.CMD and place
- them in a different directory.
-
- To get duplex printing, select the Printer tab and press the Setup pushbutton.
- Set duplex printing in the printer properties dialog. Duplex printing is
- supported only if your printer and OS/2 printer driver support it.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 42. Using PrtUp from OS/2 Command Prompt ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- If you run PRT2UP.EXE from a command line, the command window disappears
- because Prt2Up is a PM application. This is inconvenient. We've included a
- PRT2.CMD file with Prt2Up that cures this problem. The PRT2.CMD file starts a
- separate Prt2Up session, allowing you to immediately continue using the command
- line session.
-
- To print files from the command line:
-
- Prt2 [file names]
-
- To open Prt2Up's settings notebook from the command line, just type either
- PRT2UP or PRT2, without any file names.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 43. Device Font and Layout Selection ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- You can select from two different types of fonts from the font dialog: device
- fonts. and scalable fonts.
-
- Device fonts are fonts native to the printer. The list of available device
- fonts varies with each printer manufacturer and printer driver. On the
- Hewlett-Packard LaserJet Series III-D, for example, the Line Printer font is a
- device font.
-
- OS/2 also supplies scalable or ATM fonts. The standard scalable, monospaced
- font installed on OS/2 systems is Courier.
-
- So, what's the difference? The key difference is that when you have selected a
- scalable font, Prt2Up can ask PM to print your output in portrait or landscape
- orientation. Thus, when this font is selected, you may select portrait or
- landscape orientations on the Layout notebook page.
-
- However, when you have selected a device font on the Fonts notebook page, OS/2
- is able to print output only in the paper orientation specified in the Printer
- settings. Thus, if you have set the printer settings to portrait, only
- portrait options will be available on the Layout notebook page.
-
- Why would you want to select a device font if you can't use the full
- convenience of the Layout notebook page? You might prefer the appearance of
- the device font. Fonts differ greatly in appearance. Device fonts may also
- print faster than scalable fonts. You will have to try both scalable and
- device fonts to see if the performance difference is important to you.
-
- If you usually use Prt2Up for one paper orientation, just press the Setup
- button on the printer settings notebook page to open the Job Properties dialog.
- Set the paper orientation of your choice there. These settings will be
- remembered when you use Prt2Up again.
