- Telnet Enhancer version 1.0 (c) 1992 Mikael Wahlgren
-
-
- Purpose
- =======
- The purpose of this program is to enhance the operation of the Telnet
- daemon included with the IBM TCP/IP package for OS/2, in the following
- ways:
-
- * It speeds up remote operation of many applications, working in a
- way that doesn't suit the Telnet daemon.
-
- * It gives you access to many keystroke combinations, normally not
- available with remote operation.
-
- * It gives you access to DOS-boxes in OS/2 2.0.
-
- * It gives you access to multiple OS/2 or DOS sessions via the
- task switcher.
-
- * It gives you a chat mode.
-
- This version of the software is only briefly tested, and there are
- still plenty of optimization to be done. But I have decided to
- release an early version, because there certainly seems to be some
- need for it. Any suggestions on how to improve the software are
- welcome.

-
- History
- =======
- The TN_ENH product is a side effect of another product from me, called
- OS2You. OS2You is a package for remote control of an OS/2 machine via
- asynchronous lines (Dial up modems or cable) or via Named Pipes in a
- LAN.
-
- The TN_ENH product is basically the exact same program as OS2You, but
- excludes some files that are not needed for the operation of TN_ENH,
- and instead includes some files necessary for TN_ENH to operate. The
- TN_ENH package is also pre-configured to ease setup.
-
- There is a more extensive documentation included with the OS2You package,
- which you may find useful.
-
-
-
- Installation
- ============
- Copy the distributed files into a subdirectory that is PATHed and DPATHed.
- If you get the package in a archived format (.ZIP or .ZOO) you should
- extract the files first.
-
- If you plan to use the DOS box access feature, you should add the line
- "KBFILTER" to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, or in any other way ensure that the
- program KBFILTER.COM is loaded in the DOS-box when accessing it from
- Telnet (it is possible to first access the DOS-box and load KBFILTER
- manually, by entering the command via Telnet).
-
- You start the Telnet Enhancer by issuing the command "TN_ENH". If
- you add the option "-e" (TN_ENH -e), the ESC-key will NOT be a
- command key, but rather emulate an ESC keypress. Instead you will
- have to use the KEYPAD ENTER as your command key (see below about
- the command key).
-
- There are some parameters in the program that can be changed, by using
- the SETUP program (PM-program). You should consult the documentation
- included with the OS2YOU package, for more information about these
- parameters.
-
- Parameters you may find interesting to change in the SETUP program are:
-
- You can alter the User configuration for "TN_ENH" to prevent task
- switching capability.
-
- The best performance is reported to be when accessing the Telnet daemon
- with ANSI emulation.
-
- You can fine tune the below parameters to improve screen update response.
-
- "Screen update delay" - This parameter specified how often the remote
- display will be updated. Between each screen
- update, Os2You waits for some time, before it
- updates the screen again. This delay is typically
- set to 100 ms, but could be lowered to enhance the
- response time, or higher to minimize the overhead
- caused by Os2You.
-
- "Cursor update delay" - When accessing sessions via the task switcher, the
- cursor position updates must be done in a special
- way, that cause screen flicker on the Os2You host
- machine. This parameter specifies how often the
- cursor position will be updated on the remote screen.
- If set to 0 (zero) cursor position updates will be
- disabled. This parameter does not affect cursor
- updates for sessions started by Os2You.
-
- "Execution priority" - This parameter specifies which priority the screen
- update procedure should have. The higher the priority
- the more power the program has to fulfill its task.
- But if the priority is set too high, other programs
- don't get any power to execute at all (including the
- one you will execute remote). This parameter is
- usually set to NORMAL/5.
-
-
-
- Operation
- =========
- You start the program simply by entering the command "TN_ENH".
-
- All keystrokes work as normal, except for the COMMAND KEY. Normally
- the ESC key is assigned as the command key, but if you add the "-e"
- option, you will have to use the KEYPAD ENTER instead, as this will
- make the ESC key emulate a real ESC keypress. If you press the COMMAND
- KEY once, and wait for 2 seconds, a help menu will appear,
- with a choice of different commands and advanced keystrokes. If you know
- which command to use directly, you can press the COMMAND KEY followed by the
- command character directly, and you won't see the help menu.
-
- To terminate the TN_ENH program, you type EXIT on the command line.
- You will now return to the usual Telnet daemon.
-
- It is possible to switch between different FULL SCREEN TEXT SESSSIONS
- (DOS or OS/2). By pressing ESC followed by TAB, you will get a
- Task List. However note that if you use the Task List to access another
- session, you will prevent any other user on the machine (both users
- in other Telnet sessions and users operating via the physical console).
-
- You can prevent access to the Task List, by altering the user profile
- for user "TN_ENH", changing the "Allow Task Switch" flag. You will
- use the SETUP program for this.

-
- Licensing
- =========
- This program is released as Shareware. If you find it useful or if you
- use it on regular basis, you MUST register this software by paying
- the registration fee.
-
- If you register, you will receive a diskette with the newest version
- available, and the latest beta version. You will also get a registration
- file, that takes away the initial "delay" screen.
-
- For more details on registration, see the included ORDER.DOC file.
