- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Hello, Team OS/2 ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Team OS/2 Newsletter Number 5
- March/April, 1994
- Hello Teamers,
-
- One of the benefits of this newsletter to me is that it gives me a chance to
- say hello to many of you, and to let you know that there are real people here
- at IBM, not just blue suits (*smile*). That's why this newsletter is
- (*rather*) informal.
-
- But this has been a 1-person job too long, and I'm not able to keep up with the
- monthly issue that you've asked for. So I'd like you all to welcome Vicci
- Conway as the new Team OS/2 newsletter editor. I'm sure you know her name from
- her columns here in the newsletter about her BBS programs. I'm very happy to
- see her enthusiasm spread to the rest of the newsletter.
-
- And now, presenting Vicci (*smile*).
-
- Γûê Γûê Γûê Γûê Γûê Γûê Γûê Γûê Γûê Γûê Γûê Γûê Γûê Γûê Γûê Γûê Γûê Γûê Γûê Γûê Γûê Γûê
-
- Thanks Janet and Hello Teamers!
-
- First off I'd like to thank Janet (Thanks!) for the great job she has done with
- the newsletter. (Insert applause here.) I've some fairly large boots to fill
- so that the quality of the newsletter continues in an excellent manner.
-
- For those of you who aren't familiar with me, I've been involved with Team OS/2
- since mid-1992. Since joining PSP a year ago this month, I've been a bit more
- involved in electronic marketing programs than the day-to-day Team OS/2
- workings. Through my sysop duties for the Team OS/2 section on CompuServe and
- as administrator of the TEAMOS CFORUM, I've gotten to know quite a few of you
- and sincerely welcome this opportunity to work with more of you. I can't tell
- you how exciting (yes, sometimes work *is* exciting!) this opportunity is for
- me.
-
- I'd like to encourage all of *you* to send in your feedback, comments, stories
- and pictures to share with all the other Teamers. *You* are what makes this
- newsletter! Speaking of pictures, PLEASE be sure to send them in - we've got a
- surprise planned for them!
-
- My first task is to learn all the scripting commands (whew!) necessary to make
- this all work. Then updating items and making a few changes I've had in mind -
- some of which you will see in this issue. I hope these changes meet with your
- approval and I welcome your comments to teamnews@vnet.ibm.com.
-
- Speaking of changes...here's one that I hope will benefit everyone. Those of
- you who have been reading the newsletter for a while probably don't read "What
- is Team OS/2" or "IBM Team OS/2 Support" each month. In order for you to see
- where changes have occured in the sections like these that are in the
- newsletter each month, you will see a red bar ( Γöé ). This will be your
- indicator that this is new or updated information. Let me know if you think
- this change is worthwhile.
-
- Due to my learning curve and since we seem to have gotten off track anyway,
- this issue will cover March and April. This will put us back on track to see
- the newsletter the first week of each month.
-
- On a completely unrelated topic - IBM/PSP will be sponsoring a Grass Roots
- Marketing room at the upcoming Technical Interchange in San Francisco. We will
- be located near the exhibitor area in the San Francisco Hilton. Please drop by
- and see us!
-
- Onward to issue 5!

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. What is Team OS/2? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- What is Team OS/2?
-
- Team OS/2 is like an electronic user group: it consists of people around the
- world who are OS/2 enthusiasts and are voluntarily and actively sharing their
- knowledge and enthusiasm with others. They work to promote the use and
- availability of OS/2 wherever they can.
-
- But unlike a user group, there is very little organizational structure. As
- groups of Teamers come together though, they often start to form formal or
- informal groups so they can provide their own support network to work more
- effectively with IBM, vendors, user groups, and others.
-
- Being part of Team OS/2 is a state of mind. Team members are those who see
- that something needs to be done, and they figure out a way to do it. Some have
- started OS/2 BBS's to provide support for local OS/2 users. Others see that
- help is needed for local retailers to help them feel more confident in offering
- OS/2 to their customers.
-
- Membership in Team OS/2 is self-determined. You are a part of Team OS/2 (if
- you wish) if you consider that you are actively doing something to help support
- OS2 and OS/2 users and your efforts are beyond the expectations of your job.
-
- Team OS/2 is not owned or run by IBM. In fact, most Team OS/2 members are not
- IBM employees. Those Teamers who do happen to work for IBM generally use their
- own time to help others and promote the use of OS/2 and OS/2 applications just
- as other Teamers do.
-
- Although we at Team OS/2 Support in IBM PSP do maintain a Team OS/2 member list
- and put out this newsletter, we do these as services to Teamers worldwide.
- Being on the list is NOT a requirement to be part of Team OS/2. But it does
- help Teamers find other local members when looking for help, and provide a way
- to recognize the efforts of so many people in helping to promote OS/2. See
- Appendix B for information on how to get on the Team OS/2 member list.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.1. IBM Team OS/2 Support (Grass-Roots Marketing) ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- IBM Team OS/2 Support (Grass-Roots Marketing)
-
- The IBM Personal Software Products (PSP) Grass-Roots Marketing team supports
- Team OS/2 and BBS activities (see Appendix A to learn how to contact this
- group).
-
- The support that IBM PSP offers to Team OS/2 changes as we learn to work
- together better. However, we are currently supporting Team OS/2 in these ways:
-
- 1. Information Distribution and Coordination
-
- o We distribute a world-wide Team OS/2 member list via Compuserve, Internet,
- Fidonet, and electronic media. This allows Teamers to find others in
- their area and contact them electronically. See Appendix B for
- information on how to get on this list.
-
- o We can also provide a mailing list based on this member list to vendors of
- OS/2 products on request. See Appendix A to see who to contact for this
- list.
-
- o The Team OS/2 Newsletter is produced monthly and distributed
- electronically. This provides information to Teamers around the world to
- help keep all Teamers up to date on what is happening with Team OS/2 and
- with other Teamers. It also lets IBM know what Team OS/2 is up to.
-
- Appendix A shows who to contact to submit articles or suggestions for the
- newsletter, or how to get the ASCII source to include in another
- newsletter.
-
- o We participate on electronic forums to discuss Team OS/2, Teamer
- activities, and future needs.
-
- These forums also help foster creativity and imagination between Teamers,
- and encourage new activities. See Appendix C for details on where to find
- Team OS/2 on the various networks.
-
- 2. OS/2 Merchandise and other Support for Marketing Activities
-
- A number of Team OS/2 members have gone out on their own time to do public
- OS/2 demos and to support and encourage local retailers. See Appendix D for
- the specific types of activities supported, support packages, and
- requirements. Where possible, these activities are supported world-wide.
-
- 3. Team OS/2 Member Support
-
- Because of requests by many Team OS/2 members, we had a Team OS/2 logo
- designed and have arranged for Team OS/2 Tshirts, Team OS/2 golf shirts,
- and embroidered Team OS/2 logo patches. See Γöé Appendix G for ordering
- information. In addition, we send some of these out in support of public
- OS/2 demos so that the Teamer can be easily identified.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Team OS/2 Members - Where are they? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Team OS/2 Members: Where are they?
-
- The full Team OS/2 member list is available any place you can find this Team
- OS/2 newsletter. Because of the size however, it's kept in a separate file.
- Each month, the ZIP file will include the Team OS/2 member names in two
- separate formats: one by country and city and the other alphabetically by
- name.
-
- These were created as of 25 March 1994:
-
- Teamers by Network
-
- The following list was created from the email addresses given to us. It's a
- little misleading in that many people have Internet connectivity from a network
- (such as America Online), but we do not have a specific Internet Address listed
- in our database. So, the number of Internet-connected users is much higher
- than appears here:
-
- Electronic Network Teamers
- America Online 71
- Compuserve 742
- Delphi 20
- Fidonet 474
- Genie 37
- IBMMAIL 113

- Prodigy 198
- OS2BBS (IBM Talklink) 94

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Team OS/2 Reports - Activities and Events ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Team OS/2 Reports - Activities and Event
-
- We encourage Teamers to list their activities with us (IBM Team OS/2 Support)
- in order for them to be included in this newsletter. Contact us well in
- advance in order to get your event added to our database, even if you do not
- require additional support from IBM.
-
- By listing your event in our database and letting people know what you are
- doing, you can help give others ideas where they can also help in their
- communities. And it's a good way to find additional volunteers if you need
- them.
-
- Note: We've started requesting some additional descriptive information about
- each event so that we can include it in the newsletter. If you have further
- suggestions about this, please send it to teamnews@vnet.ibm.com.

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.3. IBM at the Game Developers Conference ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- IBM at the Game Developers Conference
- By The General, Robert E. Lee Jr.
-
- At this year's Game Developer's Conference, IBM will sponsor two events.
-
- The first will be a one-hour 'Sponsored Session', where we will be able to
- present OS/2 to about 100 or so people interested in attending. For that
- session, we will have Gene Steele presenting OS/2 Multimedia to demonstrate the
- power of OS/2 in a gaming environment, followed by a short pitch by the
- Developer's Assistance Program folks to let them know the DAP program is
- available to help people figure out the intricasies of OS/2 programming. (It
- is actually the DAP folks who are paying for this session, so they're allowed
- to get a sales pitch in.;-) )
-
- The second event is a booth at the vendor expo. That expo will go on for two
- days, Sunday April 24th and Monday the 25th. It will be a large 20'x10' booth,
- manned by a combination of PSP folks and Team OS/2 volunteers. (Exactly who
- will be manning that booth is still TBD, but we have more Team OS/2 volunteers
- than we can handle at the moment. Team OS/2 never ceases to amaze me!)
-
- At both events, we hope to use Galactic Civilization and Sim City as examples
- of what you can do under OS/2 that makes it such a great platform for both game
- developers and game players. These two games are now in their final beta test,
- and are among the first high quality OS/2 specific games to be marketted in the
- retail channels. They are both being published by Advanced Idea Machines.
-
- In addition to those folks working the booths, we will have at least a
- half-dozen 'IBM Attendees', who will be buying full conference tickets and will
- be able to attend the other sessions at the conference. Their mission will be
- more to listen to what these gamers want in an OS, than it will be to push OS/2
- as the solution for them.
-
- Personally, I'm *VERY* happy with IBM's and Team OS/2's support in gaining a
- respectable presence at the conference. Compared to last year's conference,
- where I was the sole IBMer in attendence, ... well... there is no comparison.
-
- The Computer Game Developer's Conference is held annually at the Westin Hotel
- in Santa Clara, CA. This year, it will start on Saturday, April 23rd and run
- through Tuesday, April 26th. For more information, write the CGDC, 555 Bryant
- St., Suite 330, Palo Alto, CA, 94301, or call their Customer Service Desk at
- (415) 856-GAME and leave a message.

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1. Team OS/2 Australia and PC'94 ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Team OS/2 Australia and PC'94
- By Neil Stokes
-
- We've just finished the PC'94 show here in Sydney - kinda like Comdex down
- under - where OS/2 received a warm reception from vendors and punters alike.
- Our local Team OS/2 crowd put in a great effort demonstrating the product and
- handling questions from customers, both real and prospective. We put out a
- flyer to all the vendors at the show, offering to install OS/2 on their
- machines, so that they could demonstrate it running their applications and/or
- hardware. We had over twenty takers, and there were more that we simply didn't
- have time to install.
-
- It was interesting to note the change in people's perceptions of OS/2; last
- year it was "What is OS/2?", but this year it was more commonly "I've heard
- about OS/2, and it's getting good reviews. Show me more about it" which is
- very gratifying.
-
- Dick Smith Electronics (nationwide retailer similar to Tandy) had a sales booth
- on the IBM stand, and were selling OS/2, OS/2 for Windows, Stacker for OS/2,
- and Lotus SmartSuite for OS/2. On the Thursday evening, traditionally the
- show's busiest time, they were moving OS/2 for Windows at the rate of one per
- minute. Added up sales were over 330 copies of OS/2 for Windows alone...I
- didn't get time to check the other stuff.
-
- Enormous Yoshi to Neil Curtis from IBM U.K., who was in Sydney on vacation and
- volunteered his time to do presentations in the theatrette on the stand...his
- showmanship - including juggling segments - attracted huge crowds...people were
- standing eight or ten deep around the stand, and at times the aisles were
- completely blocked. The theatrette faced directly onto the Microsoft
- stand...they were getting fifteen or twenty people to their demonstrations, and
- looked miserable. :-)
-
- Classic comment of the show came during an NT demo on the Micrsoft stand. The
- presenter began with a catchy slogan - "NT is built for the future!" to which
- some bright spark - not an IBMer - replied in a loud voice "Well, it sure isn't
- built for the present!" The presenter visibly shrank. :-)
-
- Anyway, thought y'all might like to know that OS/2 is alive and well and living
- in Australia...

- Recent Northern California OS/2 Demos

-
- Computer Authority Show
-
- The Saturday before last, my son and I had the pleasure of demoing OS/2 at the
- Computer Authority Show at Moscone Center in downtown San Francisco. The place
- was mobbed by thousands. The Center was split into two sections. Half was
- devoted to vendor booths showing off their hard and software, the other half
- was set up as a store to sell the demo'ed items at a discount.
-
- IBM had a small corner booth right across the aisle from the largest booth in
- the show; Microsoft's. In the IBM booth we had a multi-media docking station
- connected Thinkpad 750c and a couple of other Thinkpad models. We had gobs of
- "Z" cards and OS/2 pens (the plastic ones) to give away. I brought a box of
- OS/2 demo disks some OS/2 keychains (I'm out of both now...) and my 32Meg 33Mhz
- 2Gig 486 OS/2 box.
-
- I had plenty of Software Motion Video files including the "Blow your neighbors
- Windows out" Fiesta Bowl commercial. We took great delight in blasting this
- over and over, much to the dismay of the poor Microsoft employees across the
- way. Our little 8' by 10' booth was constantly under siege by dozens of
- attendees, while the huge Microsoft booth was lucky to snag an occasional
- victim (which they inevitably lost to us anyway.)
-
- The show ran from Friday through Sunday, but we sold the place out of OS/2 by
- Saturday afternoon. At one point, one of the people I recognized from the
- Microsoft booth came over masquerading as an attendee and started to harangue
- me about the "obviously dead" state of OS/2 and the inherent superiority of
- Windows NT. I was easily holding my own until the crowd surrounding us took
- over and abusively shouted him down and escorted him away! You had to be there!
- Too much fun. ;-)
-
- Fry's Stores
-
- Next came last Saturday's six store Tele-Video linked Northern Cali- fornia
- Fry's Stores OS/2 demos. Again I brought my monster machine and used our
- favorite OS to blow away the masses. Fry's had classrooms big enough for 50 or
- so people in each of six No. CA. Fry's stores and we were Live, Two Way, Full
- Motion Audio and Video Linked to each store. Microphones were passed among the
- attendees so that they could ask me questions (I could see them on TV as well).
- I gave two, one hour demos, an hour apart. The classrooms appeared to be
- between 30 and 60% full. There was a copy of OS/2 for Windows given away at
- each store at the end of each demo and there were "Z" cards and OS/2 pens for
- everyone as well.
-
- Excitement was high. Questions came non-stop and found me ready. Un- solicited
- anti-Microsoft sentiments were evident with people expressing dismay at what
- they have been suffering with and limited to, when they could have been using
- OS/2 instead. Just another fun Weekend in Silicon Valley.
-
- CompUSA
-
- Last night, TEAM OS/2 descended upon the local CompUSA and prepared one of
- their DX2-66 486 machines for tomorrow's CompUSA OS/2 Demo's. Dean Klingler has
- been struggling with their management to make things happen there and it
- finally looks like it will go well. We should have half a dozen Teamers and
- machines there to blow the collective minds of all the unsuspecting customers
- that will have to get past us to get into the store tomorrow! Thanks go to all
- who have made these events possible, including a number of highly motivated PSP
- employees.

-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.3. Meet Me Downtown ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Meet Me Downtown
- By Doug Azzarito
-
- I was involved in an OS/2 event a couple of weekends ago, and I am finally
- recovered enough to post a report - those 72 hour days are harder to handle
- than you'd think.
-
- The event was called "Meet Me Downtown", and the only tie-in with OS/2 was that
- Boca Raton is the home of OS/2. Many of the people walking by didn't have a
- clue, but they learned fast! I was able to scrounge 2 machines for demos. One
- was a ValuePoint with a SoundBlaster and VideoBlaster. I brought my CamCorder
- to take live shots of people and put them on the screen, and also showed off
- some multimedia apps. I didn't just show AVI movies, I had applications that
- USED MultiMedia, and that really made a difference.
-
- The other machine (a ThinkPad 720) was running OS/2 apps (DeScribe and 1-2-3),
- so people could see how powerful OS/2 apps could be. I also had a "prize
- machine" running on that machine. It was just a Rexx app I wrote before the
- show - anyone could walk up to the machine and press a key, and the prize
- machine would tell them what prize they won. I had some OS/2 shopping bags,
- mouse pads and other trinkets left over from other demos, and those wonderful
- folks in Austin also sent a box full of other goodies. The prize machine was
- busy the entire weekend (over 1000 people walked through the booth). We also
- had a drawing for copies of OS/2, and a teamer was wandering around the
- festival with a bagful of trinkets. While the band was on stage, I told
- everyone in the audience that if they saw someone with an OS/2 bag, and they
- said "Have you heard about OS/2", that person might give them a prize. Of
- course, there were hundreds of people walking around with OS/2 bags, given away
- by the prize machine, so OS/2 was a very popular topic!
-
- Everyone who sat in the audience while Blu/2 was on stage got an OS/2 pin, and
- during one break, some audience members were happy to find a secret message on
- the back of their pin that translated to, "you have won an OS/2 t-shirt".
-
- With some help fro the local OS/2 User's Group, we had a newsletter to hand out
- with OS/2 information of local interest. We even got the printing done for
- free, and gave the printer a nice mention in the flyer. The flyer was produced
- entirely in DeScribe, which also showed what OS/2 could do.
-
- This event was not your average Team OS/2 event. It really gave us a change to
- show OS/2 to Joe Public. The good news was that Joe Public liked it.
-
- Thanks to all the Teamers who stopped by the booth to help out. The more
- people that get involved, the better the event becomes. I hope this gives you
- some ideas to try yourself. Have Fun!
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.4. Anaheim, California ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Anaheim, California
-
- Event date: 2/20/94 (postponed from 2/12, due to earthquake damage to stadium)
-
- Location: Angel Stadium, Anaheim, California.
-
- Thanks to the Teamers that worked at the show: Jim Kennedy, Gloria Huang,
- Bobby Reeves and Steven V. Christ.
-
- The event ran from 10 until 4 and was crowded until the last few minutes of the
- show. Over 3000 people attended and almost all passed by the Team OS/2 demo.
- Office Solutions gave us one of their tables and provided the computer, a
- 486/66 with 16meg in a multimedia case. We used this to demonstrate
- participatory multitasking by running Popeye, the Tennis Match .AVI,
- Harley.AVI, the "take me out to the ball game" .MID clip and various WAV clips.
- We did two brief demos of CorelDraw for OS/2, but the show was too crowded to
- effectively show off the several OS/2 apps I had loaded on the demo machine
- prior to the show. We were all too busy just answering questions and handing
- out promotional material to this record crowd.
-
- Best Tool: OS/2 Balloons. The show management does not allow active "steering"
- either inside or outside the show entrance, so we gave OS/2 balloons to anyone
- who came to our demo table and wanted one. People saw others carrying these
- and came towards the balloons we had tied over the table. I had rented a small
- helium tank so we could try this; it worked very well.
-
- Demo prizes: We gave an OS2 mug or fountain pen to people that spent some time
- with us and talked to us. We gave the pins to anyone we saw buying a copy of
- OS/2 or an OS/2 application; we gave sticker sheets to anyone who asked (they
- are not too popular, except with children); we ran through all the demo disks I
- had.
-
- Tips: Collate all the flyers, throwaways, etc. before the show. It is easier to
- put a stapled packet into an OS/2 bag when things get busy. Keep demo disks out
- of the public's reach. I have stopped people from taking a dozen at a time.
-
- Special thanks to Office Solutions for the computer and the space.
-

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.5. CompUSA Event Report Summary ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- CompUSA Event Report Summary
-
- Editors Note
-
- Store Manager/Personnel:
-
- "The folks at CompUSA were exceptionally nice to us and helped out in
- every way possible."
- -Carl Camara, Team Leader, CompUSA, Newark, CA
-
- "The staff was excited about OS/2 but did not know much about it. The
- store put us in the hardware demo area. It would have been better if
- we had an area away from the hardware demos, like in the furniture
- section or near the front of the store. More guidance to the store
- managers and teams would have helped. This would have prevented teams
- from being placed in poor locations."
- -Edward J. D'Avignon, Team Leader, CompUSA, Orange, CT
-
- "CompUSA support was fantastic. Floor manager bent over backwards to
- provide anything we needed. Later in the day, he basically invited
- Team OS/2 to demo at his store at any time."
- -Dan Bullock, Team Leader, CompUSA, Mt. Laurel, NJ
-
- "The store management was very friendly, but I had trouble with getting
- in with the right CompUSA person for the demo. This will not be a
- problem next time, as they want us back. Generally speaking the OS/2
- knowledge of the staff was very close to zero! The store manager came
- up to us after the demo and thanked us for coming and invited us back.
- He also gave us a special thanks because we cleaned up after ourselves.
- He told me that most demo days the people pick up their machines and go,
- leaving the staff to clean up!!
- -Stephen Riley, Team Leader, CompUSA, Greensboro, NC
-
- "Cooperation of local management was excellent after initial delays with
- setting up the store's demo machine. Their enthusiasm grew remarkably as
- the lead up and event proceeded. Enthusiasm and knowledge of store staff
- progressed from mostly yawns to genuine interest and enthusiasm. There
- were only two or three OS/2 supporters on staff before the event and at
- least a dozen after it. About a half dozen decided to make the leap
- and migrate to OS/2 on their personal systems as a result of the event.
- One of the store staffers who works the software section holding the OS/2
- apps was firmly committed to the Microsoft camp on the day I began
- setting up the demo machine. He progressed from pretty serious IBM/OS2
- bashing to shyly asking questions to an enthusiastic pledge to make the
- switch. The Monday after the event when I stopped by for the post-event
- inventory, he said he'd switch to OS/2 as soon as more BackMaster was in
- stock so he could backup his stuff and make the change."
- -Ken Rucker, Team Leader, CompUSA, Arlington, TX
-
- "I received outstanding support from the CompUSA Management. They
- basically gave me everything I needed."
- -Jim McGuffin, Team Leader, CompUSA, Mesa, AZ
-
- "I talked with the assistant manager, and he was very impressed with
- OS/2, as he expressed a great deal of interest in learning much more
- about it. He asked me if we held classes so people like him could learn
- more about it. He was also impressed with the amount of customer
- interest in OS/2 and he told me that this demo had shown a bigger
- customer response than any other that they had done. Clearly, OS/2 made
- a good impression on the folks at CompUSA, both customers and employees."
- -Mark Kelley, Teamer Volunteer, CompUSA, Indianapolis, IN
-
- "The retail and software managers set up times for us to come back and
- train the store staff on OS/2. They also want us back in a few weeks
- when the software is back in stock."
- -Chris White, Teamer Volunteer, CompUSA, Sacramento, CA
-
- "The store manager pulled me aside to explain that he had called MS to
- cancel a demo they had for the same day, so we could do the OS/2 thing.
- I think we did his store a good service. They are gearing up to stock
- many of the apps that we demoed. I hope the same folks come back the
- second time."
- -M.Dean Klingler, Team Leader, CompUSA, Santa Clara, CA
-
- Materials/Applications-
-
- "I did not receive all the apps in time. Also, be sure that we receive
- ALL the apps that are on the demo list. The best packages to demo were
- the ones that came with complete documentation. If a company expects
- us to learn about their app to do demos, they should NOT send a
- restricted demo version. They should send the real retail version of the
- package."
- -Edward J. D'Avignon, Team Leader, CompUSA, Orange, CT
-
- "The Newark store had almost every OS/2 Blitzday sponsor application -
- plus others - on encaps - and an OS/2 sections. Kudos to Timothy Sipples
- for his FAQ list, which I received as a part of the Blitzday package and
- is PACKED with useful information."
- -Carl Camera, Team Leader, CompUSA, Newark, CA
-
- "All applications arrived before the event. Applications should be
- provided a month or more to demo'ers before the event. Learning 20
- applications in a weeks time is a little difficult. Some applications
- were not on the shelves in the store, though most were."
- -Dan Bullock, Team Leader, CompUSA, Mt. Laurel, NJ
-
- "Seems like vendor council products should have had a "real" copy of
- product to give Teamer to demo, and a demo disk of some sort to leave
- with the store. Could perhaps a multimedia presentation be created
- easily with IBM's WITT product? It would be slick to have demo
- running real product. Then customer could look at demo and play with
- product himself.
- -Herbert C. Acree, Team Volunteer, CompUSA, Edison, NJ
-
- The applications did not sell as well. Many people were still just
- being introduced to OS/2. What the applications did provide is not
- obvious in application sales figures. People wanted to know the
- power of OS/2. This is something which is easy to explain, but
- explanation provides little other than contentment. They 'saw' the
- power of OS/2. They saw applications which they can use. Customers
- now know what applications are available for OS/2 and that there are
- apps available. The applications will follow OS/2's good fortune."
- -Dan Bullock, Team Leader, CompUSA, Mt. Laurel, NJ
-
- "I only got there at the end of the day, but was greeted by about 6-8
- Team OS/2 members. I asked what types of apps had been there during
- the day and it seemed that they had pretty much everything that I had
- been looking for or had ordered mail-order. Overall I was very impressed
- I wish I had gotten there earlier."
- -Darrel Davis, Attendee, CompUSA, Rockville, MD
-
- "We all tried to push the sale of OS/2 applications but the hot app
- we sold was OS/2 for Windows."
- -Jim McGuffin, Team Leader, CompUSA, Mesa, AZ
-
- "Sold a handful of OS/2 for Windows and lots of OS/2 applications.
- DeScribe and Golden ComPass sold out immediately. Also sold out by the
- end of the day - BackupWiz, Performance 2.1 (6 copies), CPU Monitor
- Plus. CompUSA set a line for people who wanted to buy products that they
- were out of. We also sold two ValuePoints with OS/2 installed.
- -Chris White, Teamer Volunteer, CompUSA, Sacarmento, CA
-
- "Sales of the ISV products weren't as strong as I had hoped for, but
- sales of both the 'Special Edition' and the full blown OS/2 packages was
- brisk. At least two (and I think a couple more) people returned the DOS
- 6.2 upgrade to the shelf in favor of the special edition. Several
- others delayed pruchase of DOS/Win programs in favor of purchasing
- memory upgrades along with new OS/2 code."
- -Ken Rucker, Team Leader, CompUSA, Arlington, TX
-
- "We sold nearly every app they had in the store. Many people were turned
- off because they had come expressly to get apps and did not find them
- there."
- -M. Dean Klingler, Team Leader, CompUSA, Santa Clara, CA
-
- "We didn't sell too much of the OS/2 applications, mostly because these
- folks don't have OS/2 yet. I hope the Vendor Council isn't discouraged
- because we ended up selling a lot of OS/2 and one 1 or 2 OS/2 apps. I
- know what my learning curve was, and once we get these folks on board
- with OS/2, it's only a matter of time before they'll be wanting to dump
- their Windows applications."
- -Carl Higbee, Team Leader, CompUSA, Newark, CA
-
- Questions from Attendees
-
- The biggest and most popular question was 'Why use OS/2?', which was
- really the questions of 'what is OS/2?' When customers became informed
- of the OS/2 doctrine they were soon impressed, very impressed. They
- would then pop the question, 'year, but how much does this wonderful
- thing cost me?', to which our reply is, '39 dollars.' Their big
- question was, 'is there an easy way to remove OS/2 if I don't like it?'
- I recommended they place it on a separate partition."
- -Dan Bullock, Team Leader, CompUSA, Mt. Laurel, NJ
-
- "'What does (multitasking/threading/object orientation/etc.) do for ME?'
- There was a good deal of interest in relating features to benefits. A
- surprising number of the 'uninitiated' visiting the CompUSA event really
- don't want to have to worry about the bits and bytes of the computer.
- They just want to keep working while the fax is coming in or the document
- is printing and a client calls requiring access to database records.
- There was a noticeable amount of frustration apparent with having to
- learn and deal with inconsistent interfaces of DOS/Win applications.
-
- Variations on 'Will it work with my system?' and 'What about device
- driver support?' Many people who had either tried and failed to
- successfully install OS/2, or know someone who has had installation
- problems were anywhere from denigrating to outright hostile toward IBM
- and OS/2 for failing to provide 'idiot proof' driver installation
- mechanisms. Using the high-end Media Vision Multimedia kit on our demo
- PC as an example, we were able to clarify to most of them that it is the
- supplier of the add-on devices which have failed to provide drivers and
- installation utilities for their products.
-
- 'If there were applications for (XYZ App Class), I might give it a try.'
- Every time this concern came up, we were able to show one or more apps
- that put this question to rest."
- -Ken Rucker, Team Leader, CompUSA, Arlington, TX
-
- "We had a LOT of people stop by and ask questions. Many, or most, had
- heard and read about OS/2, but hadn't yet seen it, ans seeing seemed to
- make a big difference to them. The object-oriented GUI and the
- multitasking abilities seemed to be big attention getters, and many
- people were surprised at OS/2's ability to run DOS and Windows programs."
- -Mark Kelley, Team Volunteer, CompUSA, Indianapolis, IN
-
- Attendence
-
- "Estimate 100 to 150 stopped by the display. About 50 current OS/2
- users, in addition to team staffers, lingered to talk about and look at
- apps being demonstrated. Estimate 40 to 50 consumers who are not
- presently running OS/2 engaged in serious discussions and product demos."
- -Ken Rucker, Team Leader, CompUSA, Arlington, TX
-
- "All told, we talked to several hundred people, and sold some apps. The
- interest was wonderful. The only 'bad' encounter was from an OS/2
- developer who is going nuts trying to get some APPC stuff to work. He
- came back later for my last coffee mug."
- -Charlie Kotan, Team Leader, Sacramento, CA
-
- "150 tried it but didn't inhale - est., but not really sure at all.
- 20 were happy OS/2 users.
- -Dan Bullock, Team Leader, CompUSA, Mt. Laurel, NJ
-
- "One laptop buyer insisted that his new machine be preloaded with OS/2
- before he would complete payment on it. When he came to pick it up, he
- asked the store to have us 'check it out' before he paid."
- -Ken Rucker, Team Leader, CompUSA, Arlington, TX
-
- "By my estimate, we had between 400-500 visitors to our demo. At no
- time were there fewer than 10-15 people. With 7 Team OS/2ers, we still
- had very little time to rest. We gave away all our sticky pads, pens
- and nearly all of the marketing sheets which I printed out. Rainer
- provided some flyers showing the new Hard Drives now being marketed
- to the public by IBM San Jose and we had great interest there, too."
- -M.Dean Klingler, Team Leader, CompUSA, Santa Clara, CA
-
- Misc. Comments from Teamers
-
- "Need more focus on selling store employees. There should have been
- a training session setup for store employees. Can't be on Saturday
- during business hours when the store is full of customers. Several
- employees wanted my OS/2 lapel pin. I was glad to get out of the
- store alive with it."
- -Herb Acree, Team Volunteer, CompUSA, Philadelphia, PA
-
- "I will be following up with this store to say the least. The
- surrounding business district is large and very computer oriented."
- -Dan Bullock, Team Leader, CompUSA, Mt. Laurel, NJ
-
- Start preparations early. Veteran presenters will have an advantage
- especially if they have a regular demo set to use. If using a store
- machine, allow plenty of time to get the WPS presentation space nicely
- configured and drivers correctly configured. Press for sufficient
- time for your product demo volunteers to learn their products. Try to
- arrange for pre-event meetings of the demonstrators to share ideas and
- conduct some cross training and demo dry runs."
- -Ken Rucker, Team Leader, CompUSA, Arlington, TX
-
- "Things have changed quite a bit since my last trip there in December.
- An OS/2 sections, OS/2FW and 2.1GA occupying an end isle display,
- generating interest and selling. All in all, it was a most satisfying
- day in assessing OS/2's acceptance in the commpunity and helping advance
- public awareness of OS/2 specific software."
- -Dr. Eric Shoenfeld, Team Volunteer, CompUSA, Garden City, NY
-
- "The 'slices-dices' multi-media video and the Harley video were the hits
- of the day. When folks saw both running simultaneously, completely
- synchronized they couldn't believe it. I'm sure some dialed 1-800-
- EXPLODE-MY-HEAD!!"
- -Charlie Kotan, Team Leader, CompUSA, Sacramento, CA
-
- "The lack of visible advertising hurt attendance, I'm sure. Many of the
- passers by said they'd been interested in OS/2 for some time, but
- couldn't locate anywhere to obtain information. The small ad space in
- the DFW newspapers did little to call attention to the event. Except
- for UG and FidoNet people, the passers by weren't aware of the event
- before spotting us in the store."
- -Ken Rucker, Team Leader, CompUSA, Arlington, TX

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.5.1. Thanks! ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Thanks!
-
- I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped us out on the
- March 5th OS/2 Blitzday! The response was great! We had over 60 stores
- covered out of a possible of 71 stores. I have had several discussions with
- CompUSA Headquarters and overall they were very pleased with the sales activity
- and the great support that everyone gave.
-
- Speaking of sales, let me share with everyone what the results were. We
- increased total IBM OS/2 2.1 sales for Saturday, March 5th 10 TIMES what they
- normally have sold. This includes OS/2 and OS/2 For Windows. OS/2 applications
- had a good start in now being offered in retail. I understand we need to
- continue working close with CompUSA in stocking more OS/2 applications and more
- titles. I will let everyone know when this gets done. IBM C SET ++ is going
- to be added to the OS/2 section.
-
- Thanks again for your support and let's continue working with CompUSA reps and
- customers!
-
- Regards,
- Steve Unger

-
- About Galactic Civilizations
-
- In the first half of the 21st century Humanity, using the Hubble II space
- telescope, first confirmed the existence of Earthlike planets around other
- stars. This discovery, along with Humanity's innate desire for discovery,
- united all governments of Earth in a single effort to colonize these planets. A
- massive research effort effort was launched to provide a practical interstellar
- drive system.
-
- A century later, Humanity finally achieved a key breakthrough in Physics - the
- Micro Impulse Drive. The MID folds space allowing for an instantaneous transfer
- of a ship in the MID field from one point in space to another. The MID folds
- space in 500 AU's (astronomical units) and each fold requires 20 hours plus set
- up. This limits the "speed" of the MID to one parsec (3.26) light years per
- standard year.
-
- Three colony ships, tagged in the press "Colony Wagons", are built - the Nina,
- the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. These Colony Wagons do not just transport the
- colony, they are the colony. These ships soft land on a target planet and act
- as the colony's base while the inhabitants slowly tame the outside environment.
- This means that virtually any planet can be colonized but Earth- like planets
- are definitely preferred. Each Colony Wagon contains a database with all the
- technology and works of art known to Humanity. Since the colonies are likely
- to be many parsecs apart, it is expected that each colony be to a certain
- degree, self sufficient.
-
- The three ships set sail into the unknown seas of space. The Nina and the Pinta
- engaged the MID and streaked off into the vastness beyond. When the Santa
- Maria engaged the MID it encountered a cosmic "string". The combination of the
- cosmic string's gravity along with the MID created a fold that trans- ported
- the ship into a galaxy billions of parsecs away from our galaxy. The Santa
- Maria arrived in a totally unknown part of space.
-
- Now, while the crew sees many stars in the distance, it is impossible to tell
- exactly how far the stars are without any star maps. Therefore, the Santa Maria
- needs to reach within several parsecs of a given star to get a fix on it and
- its planets.
-
- You are the colony leader of the Santa Maria. You must find and colonize a new
- world. Fortunately the cosmic string has enhanced your MID temporarily and the
- captain believes he can made about 12 parsec in the next year. Unfortunately
- the ships communica- tions system has picked up numerous electromagnetic
- signals from many different directions. You are not alone, there are other
- civilizations - alien, here to keep you company. The signals seem to indicate a
- space flight technology on par with the MID. Humanity generated similar signals
- during the MID tests.

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7.2. Demo Tips ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Demo Tips
-
- Here are some suggestions for demoing OS/2 that have been shown to be rather
- effective and often fun. This will be an ongoing section in this newsletter.
- Please send your suggestions and submissions to the newsletter editor (see
- Appendix A for contact information):
-
- The following was sent from Melissa Woo, Fidonet 1:233/4/100
-
- A member of my user group had 4 copies of Wing Commander II running
- simultaneously on the OS/2 desktop. (he says he had to put them into CGA mode)
- Wows 'em every time. : )
-
- The following was sent from Robert Worne, Fidonet 1:102/905
-
- I changed the Shredder Icon to a toilet and added the flushing sound whenever
- OS/2 deletes a file.
-
- Here's some of the other nifty things I demoed to the Die-hard DOS and Windows
- fans:
-
- X-Wing (DOS game) running in a window on the WPS with full soundblaster
- accompanyment. Other games were Lands of Lore and Populous II (these are very
- OS/2 friendly).
-
- DOS VDM settings: Showed those QEMM-haters how easy it is to set the
- configurations to those pesky memory settings... impressing people with
- messages like "741456 largest executable program size" messages.
-
- Setting PKUNZIP as an Icon and associating it with all the *.zip files, and
- demoing that you can now drag 'n drop zipfiles to be unzipped and zipped. (This
- remains one of the most impressive OS/2 functions I have seen.)
-
- Running Video for windows seamlessly on the WPS desktop.
-
- MMPM/2 demos, with those (pesky) parrots.
-
- And notably, since my BBS was on the machine, passing out the drivers files to
- those who came up with questions like "how do I get my CD-ROM to work with my
- PAS-16?"
-

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.2. Appendix B: How can I join Team OS/2? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- How can I join Team OS/2?
-
- The IBM Team OS/2 Support group keeps a database of members as a service to
- Team OS/2 members world-wide. We then sort and upload them to the electronic
- networks so that you can find each other.
-
- For this database, please send the following information to one of the
- addresses given in Appendix A:
-
- 1. Your Name
-
- 2. Mailing address (only the city, state, and country will be published)
-
- May we release your address to vendors who wish to do mailings to Team OS/2
- members? (Yes or no)
-
- 3. Userids and networks
-
- 4. Optional: you can include a short (1-2 line) description to be included
- with your name. Sometimes software developers like to mention which
- products they've written or BBS operators include how to reach their BBS.
-
- 5. For our private records (these will NOT be published), please also include
- your phone number (home/work), Fax, etc.
-
- Also please let us know what you've been doing to help promote the use of OS/2.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.3. Appendix C: Where can I find Team OS/2 Members? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Where can I find Team OS/2 Members?
-
- The majority of people associated with Team OS/2 can be found somewhere online,
- participating on a Bulletin Board. Since the fastest and easiest method of
- communicating with a large group such as Team OS/2 is via electronic networks,
- this is the perfect avenue to coordinate events, to report on what you or your
- group are doing, or to help others who have questions or problems. We also
- electronically brainstorm about new ideas.
-
- We also provide a list of Team OS/2 members and email addresses worldwide. It
- can normally be found wherever this newsletter is found. The next section in
- this Appendix shows how to address these users via the Internet no matter which
- electronic system they may be on.
-
- Below are the major networks where Teamers can be found. The lead Teamer on
- each network is usually a volunteer assisting in monitoring conferences and
- uploading files from IBM PSP. Note: these folks are *not* IBM OS/2 technical
- support.
-
- The following list is maintained by Vicci Conway (IBM PSP Bulletin Board
- Coordinator). Please contact her with corrections and changes.
-
- America Online: Go to the "Computing" icon, "OS/2" topic. The lead Teamer
- here is Ed D'Avignon and can be found with the userid
- "TEAMOS2 ED".
-
- AOL has regularly-scheduled OS/2 chats on Tuesdays at 11:30
- p.m., Thursdays at 9 p.m., and Saturdays at 9:30 p.m.. All
- times are Eastern Standard Time.
-
- Compuserve: "GO OS2USER", Section 9, Team OS/2. Vicci Conway
- (76711,1123) is the lead Teamer here. To join CompuServe,
- call (800)-848-8199 (USA only).
-
- Delphi: Custom Forum 41 is where the Teamers hang out on Delphi.
- Steve Gallagher (S.GALLAGHER) takes the main Teamer liason
- role here. To join Delphi, call (800) 695-4005 (USA only).
-
- Fidonet: Join us on the TEAMOS2 echo conference (on the Fidonet zone
- 1 backbone but available internationally). Janet Gobeille
- (1:109/347.3479) is active here along with many other
- IBMers who join in on this conference. Steve Gallagher is
- the volunteer uploading IBM announcements to the
- International OS2 echo conference.
-
- GEnie: Go to the "OS/2" roundtable (page 1400). Kevin Royalty is
- an active Teamer here and sends in the GEnie announcements
- for this newsletter.
-
- GEnie has regularly scheduled RealTime Conferences (RTCs)
- which are listed in the Upcoming Bulletin Board Conferences
- section.
-
- To join GEnie, call (800) 638-9636 (USA only).
-
- Within IBM: See TEAMOS2 FORUM and TEAMOS2 CFORUM on the internal IBMPC
- conference disk. Also, check TEAMUK FORUM (UK) or TEAMCDA
- FORUM (Canada).
-
- Internet: No specific conference, but you will find Teamers on most
- of the OS/2-specific newsgroups. For Team OS/2 information
- on the Internet, send email to luvos2@vnet.ibm.com.
-
- OS2BBS (from IBM): Join us on the TeamOS2 CFORUM. Vicci Conway (USIB55J9 at
- IBMMAIL) is the forum Administrator. To join the OS2BBS,
- call (800) 547-1283 (USA only).
-
- Prodigy: The OS/2 Club. This Club on Prodigy has files available
- for downloading and messages are auto-posted. Check the
- "New Files" area weekly for new uploads. The Team OS/2
- support liason is Gene Gough (DWJG89A). To join Prodigy,
- call (800) PRODIGY (USA only).
-
- Also, there are often Team OS/2 get-togethers or meetings at trade shows and
- technical conferences. If you plan to attend a conference, please check
- electronically for any Team OS/2 activity that may be planned.

-
- Team OS/2 International!
-
- Team OS/2 is everywhere.... not just in the USA. Team members can be found
- around the world. Although the international conferencing is often done in
- English, there are Teamers active on local bulletin boards and other
- conferences in many languages. This section contains any country-specific
- information that we can collect to assist and publicize your efforts to help
- other OS/2 users.
-
- If you know of some specific Team OS/2 or OS/2 conferences in your country,
- please send us a short note with information on how to get to them. We will be
- happy to re-post that information here in following newsletters to help others
- learn where they can also join in the fun.

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.5. Appendix E: Team OS/2 Activities support by IBM ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Team OS/2 Activities support by IBM
-
- This section contains information on specific activities and events where IBM
- PSP is actively supporting Team OS/2. However, if you are looking for support
- that doesn't fall within one of the following categories, please contact us to
- discuss.
-
- At this time, major activities that are supported include:
-
- 1. Support for public OS/2 demos (including those at stores or universities)
-
- 2. Support for local OS/2 resellers
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.5.1. Support for Public OS/2 Demos ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- If you're planning to do a demo for a group of people or for a public event,
- please contact IBM Team OS/2 Support. Examples of supported demos include
- public demos at universities, PC fairs, hamfests, shopping center malls, or
- OS/2 days at local retailers.
-
- We would like to know:
-
- o Where the demo will be done (name of school, store, etc.)
-
- o Date and location of scheduled event (city, state, country)
-
- o Number of Teamers involved in doing or supporting the demo
-
- o Number of people expected to attend and see your demo
-
- o If this is a public demo at a software retail store, also send the number of
- store clerks expected to be working during your demo.
-
- o Your name, shipping address, and telephone number
-
- We would like to help with a 'Team OS/2 demo pack' with some things to support
- your demo and to give away during it. Since the contents will vary according
- to the event, we'll discuss what this will consist of after receiving your
- request.
-
- (Note: this 'demo pack' is not intended for user group meetings.)
-
- Then after your event, we would like a report on it including, but not limited
- to:
-
- o Names and addresses of all the Teamers involved in the activity
-
- o Pictures, Pictures, Pictures. Please take pictures of the Teamers in this
- activitiy, and send them to us with your report. We would like to include
- your pictures in future newsletters.
-
- o Number of people who saw your demo or tried OS/2 during that time.
-
- o How did it go? Tell us what went well, what didn't, what advice you'd have
- for others doing this? Also, what suggestions do you have for our Team OS/2
- support in the future.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.5.2. Team OS/2 Support for local retailers selling OS/2 ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- If you have a local retail store that is selling OS/2, we encourage you to
- 'Adopt a Store'. Meet the employees, answer their questions on OS/2, encourage
- them to stock it, visit them on a regular basis if you can.
-
- If you adopt a store that is carrying OS/2 but doesn't have any OS/2 marketing
- 'support' (such as demo disks, z-cards, etc.), please contact us with the
- following information:
-
- o Name and address of store
- o Name of the store manager
- o Does the store have a demo OS/2 system (or will they?)
-
- We'll send you a 'Team OS/2 Store Pack' for you to give to them. This
- contains:
-
- OS/2 'Z-cards' (flyer with OS/2 information)
- OS/2 demo disks
- OS/2 post-its and pens for store employees
- A 'monitor topper' if they are running OS/2
- Catalogs from sources of OS/2 merchandise
-
- Note: at this time we are only prepared to offer this support within the US.
- However, if there are Teamers outside the US who are seriously interested in
- requesting one of these packs, please EMAIL or FAX your inquiry to us as given
- in Appendix A and we'll see what we can arrange.

-
- Team OS/2 Merchandise
-
- Lees Keystone will be stocking special items for Team OS/2. You can contact LK
- for orders and pricing information at the following:
-
- Phone: (800) 717-7666 (USA only)
- Phone: (914) 273-6755.
- Fax: (914) 273-9187.
-
- They are now carrying white Team OS/2 tshirts (with a large 6-color logo on the
- front). They also have golf shirts with the colored Team OS/2 logo embroidered
- on the front where a pocket would have been. The golf shirts are available in
- green, red, and blue.
-
- They also carry embroidered Team OS/2 patches (2 1/2" x 2 3/8"). It would be
- great on hats, jackets, etc.
-
- You'll be seeing these shirts (both the golf shirts and the tshirts) as more
- OS/2 demos and other public events are planned. From now on, IBM Team OS/2
- support will be sending these out for the "uniforms" for the teamers who are
- working these events instead of the shirts with the OS/2 logo. The OS/2 shirts
- will still be used for other purposes, but Team OS/2 shirts will only be sent
- for the volunteers.
-
- At this time, we're not planning to send out the embroidered patches, however
- they look very good. They were designed and stocked based on many requests by
- Teamers.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
