  5. This file contains instructions on installing NDIS drivers into IBM Lan 
  6. Server v2.0 and v3.0 - OS/2 and DOS systems.
  7.  
  8. Drive A:\ is referenced throughout this README file, substitute the driveid
  9. that this file was extracted onto if different.
  10.  
  11. IBM LAN Server 3.0
  12. ------------------
  13.  
  14.  IBM LAN Server 3.0 contains an installer for both OS/2 (LAPS) and DOS 
  15.  (DXMAID).  Both of these installation utilities fully support OEM network 
  16.  adapter driver import capability.
  17.  
  18. DOS Installation
  19.  
  20.   Run the DXMAID installer from the IBM LAN Support diskette.  Use the 
  21.   defaults from the first menu.  The second menu prompts you to enter the 
  22.   drive and path for the import diskette.  Remove the LAN Support diskette, 
  23.   put the 3Com EtherDisk diskette in the drive, and type A:\DOS for the 
  24.   drive and path.  The installer will pause after it copies the files needed 
  25.   from the EtherDisk diskette.  Place the LAN Support diskette back in the 
  26.   drive, and continue the installation.

  28. OS/2 Installation
  29.  
  30.   Run the LAPS installer from the LAN Adapter and Protocol diskette.  From 
  31.   the second menu, select the Install option.  LAPS then installs itself and 
  32.   other files, and returns to the second menu.  Select Install again.  On the
  33.   next menu, LAPS prompts for a drive and path for installation.  Remove the 
  34.   LAPS diskette and insert the EtherDisk diskette in the drive.  Type 
  35.   A:\OS2 for the drive and path.  LAPS will copy the needed files from 
  36.   the EtherDisk diskette.  When the acknowledge message appears at the end of
  37.   the copy, reinsert the LAPS diskette and continue with the installation.

  39. IBM LAN Server 2.0
  40. ------------------
  41.  
  42.  LAN Server 2.0 is not as sophisticated as LAN Server 3.0.  Installation can 
  43.  be done successfully, but manual intervention is required.  In all cases, the 
  44.  user is required to edit files.  For OS/2, the E editor is fine.  For DOS, use
  45.  either EDLIN or EDIT.

  47. DOS Installation
  48.  
  49.   Run the DXMAID installer from the LAN Support diskette.  Specify the 
  50.   Ethernet adapter installation from the menu.  When DXMAID is completed, do 
  51.   the following to complete the installation.

  53.   1. Copy the EtherLink III NDIS driver to the hard disk.  Type:
  54.     
  55.      COPY A:\DOS\ELNK3.DOS C:\LANMAN
  56.  
  57.   2. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file.
  58.   
  59.      a. Change the line:
  60.       
  61.         device = \LANMAN\PROTMAN.DOS
  62.        
  63.         to
  64.        
  65.         device = \LANMAN\PROTMAN.DOS /I:\LANMAN
  66.   
  67.      b. Change the line:
  68.       
  69.         device = XX.DOS
  70.        
  71.         to
  72.        
  73.         device = \LANMAN\ELNK3.DOS
  74.   
  75.      c. Save the file and exit the editor.

  77.   3. Enter the LANMAN subdirectory.  Type:
  78.    
  79.      CD LANMAN
  80.  
  81.   4. Rename the PROTOCOL.INI file to save it.  Type:
  82.     
  83.      REN PROTOCOL.INI PROTOCOL.OLD
  84.  
  85.   5. Append the PROTOCOL.INI fragment from the 3Com EtherDisk diskette.  Type:
  86.   
  87.      COPY PROTOCOL.OLD + A:\{path on EDISK}\PROTOCOL.INI  PROTOCOL.INI

  89.   6. Edit the new PROTOCOL.INI file.

  91.      a. Four lines after the line [ETHERNET], change the line:
  92.       
  93.         Bindings = IBMAC 
  94.        
  95.         to
  96.        
  97.         Bindings = ELNK3
  98.    
  99.      b. Two lines before the line:
  100.        
  101.         ;3C509 3Com EtherLink III adapter
  102.        
  103.         change the blank line to 
  104.        
  105.         [ELNK3]
  106.     
  107.      c. Save the file and exit the editor.

  109.   The installation is complete.  The LAN Support program activates the next 
  110.   time the machine boots.

  112. OS/2 Installation
  113.  
  114.   1. Insert the IBM OS/2 Requester Diskette #1 and run the LAPS installation 
  115.      program.  Select Advanced Installation on the second menu.  
  116.  
  117.   2. Insert the OS/2 Protocol and Drivers diskette when the prompt appears.  
  118.      After LAPS has completed copying the files from the Protocol and Drivers 
  119.      diskette, select the Copy Additional Drivers option from the next menu.  
  120.      The next menu prompts for the drive and path for the additional drivers.

  122.   3. Insert the EtherDisk diskette and type A:\OS2.  LAPS copies the 
  123.      appropriate 3Com adapter files to the hard disk and returns to the 
  124.      options menu.  
  125.     
  126.   4. Select the Configure Workstation option.  The next menu prompts for 
  127.      adapter and protocol options.  In the adapters window, page down until 
  128.      the 3Com EtherLink Family OS/2 menu item appears.  Select this item and 
  129.      continue the installation.  When the installation is complete, exit the 
  130.      installer.

  132.   The installer presents a message that the system needs to be rebooted for 
  133.   the changes to take effect.  However, you must complete the following 
  134.   steps before you reboot the computer.
  135.  
  136.   1.  Edit the CONFIG.SYS file.  After the line:
  137.     
  138.       device=C:\IBMCOM\PROTMAN.OS2
  139.      
  140.       insert the line:
  141.      
  142.       device=C:\IBMCOM\MACS\ELNK3.OS2
  143.    
  144.   2.  Save the file and exit the editor.
  145.  
  146.   3.  Reboot the computer, and the OS/2 requester will activate.
