  12. Reading Dick Ezzard's review of the Underground WordStar prompted
  13. two responses -- I ordered the book, and I offer these reviews of
  14. two more books whose contents address a similar audience:
  15.  
  16. "Practical  WordStar Uses," Julie Anne Arca,  Sybex  Inc.,  1983,
  17. price unavailable, and
  18.  
  19. "Getting  the Most from WordStar and MailMerge," M.  David Stone,
  20. Prentice-Hall Inc., 1984, $14.95.

  22. I  bought the Arca book some time ago to supplement the blue  OCC
  23. manual and the well-known Naiman "Introduction to WordStar" as it
  24. looked to be a cookbook with well-defined procedures to carry out
  25. specific  tasks.   It is that,  but I found many of the tasks too
  26. specific  for  my  purposes,   and  making  them  more  generally
  27. applicable  requires  referring back  to  MicroPro  documentation
  28. (fortunately not OCC's since I upgraded to 3.3) and/or to Naiman.
  29. One  of the reasons that Rombauer's "Joy of Cooking" has remained
  30. popular for so many years is that is is full of flexible  recipes
  31. that  allow  for individual preferences but with descriptions  of
  32. the   likely  consequences  if  the  user  tries  this  or   that
  33. alternative;  Arca  is  more rigid,  and does not  offer  similar
  34. choices.

  36. That format,  of course,  results from an editorial decision, and
  37. is  aimed at the user who doesn't need or want  the  flexibility;
  38. that user will be delighted with the layout of the presentations,
  39. a typical series of headings being:
  40.      Ch 8 Boilerplate Paragraphs
  41.      What is a boilerplate paragraph?
  42.      When to use boilerplate paragraphs
  43.      What you will do (here follow keystrokes and displays)
  44.      How to create a master list of boilerplate paragraphs (more)
  45.      What you just did (recap)
  46.      How  to  use boilerplate paragraphs,  and How  to  customize
  47.      boilerplate paragraphs (each with a recap).

  49. It includes a large poster cheat sheet that I don't have room for
  50. but that others may find helpful.

  52. "Practical  WordStar  Uses" is  practical,  within  limits.   One
  53. serious  limit  for some readers would be its lack of mention  of
  54. dot  commands  and other relatively esoteric  wordStar  features;
  55. before buying it make sure you're part of its addressed audience.

  57. The  Stone book is the other side of the coin;  it addresses  the
  58. experienced  and  perhaps  blase  WordStar  user,   like   Ezzard
  59. describes  himself in his Underground WordStar review  -- is this
  60. the Power User (hateful term!) we've read so much about recently?
  61. All  seriousness aside,  Stone addresses a different  group  than
  62. does Arca.  Some of his chapter headings suggest his approach:
  63.  
  64.      WordStar's Unsupported Proportional Space Print Feature;
  65.      A Hidden Twist on Two-column Printing;
  66.      Conditional Printing;
  67.      Creating a Data Entry Screen with MailMerge;
  68.      Using WordStar/MailMerge as a Data Base Program;
  69.      Using MailMerge as a Report Generator;
  70.  
  71. And  so on.   His last chapter on ancillary  programs  critically
  72. discusses  some available spelling checkers,  writing style aids,
  73. and indexers;  his introduction includes an excellent  comparison
  74. of different WS/MM releases.

  76. Some books, like some programs and some people, go "Click!" right
  77. away.   This is one of them. It may be more widely available now,
  78. but for a while Spite Software,  4875 SW 19th Drive,  Portland OR
  79. 97201  seemed  to  be the only people who stocked  it,  and  they
  80. couldn't always get it.

  82. And this is an additional unabashed plug for Spite,  while  we're
  83. on  the subject -- any CP/M operator not on their mailing list is
  84. an ostrich.
