  26. THE PC CERTIFY 5.1 RELEASE DISKETTE CONTAINS THE FOLLOWING FILES:

  28. CERTIFY.EXE     This is the PC Certify executable program.  
  29.  
  30. SD3000.EXE      Overlay Module used by PC Certify for diagnostic
  31.                 testing.  If you attempt to run SD3000.exe 
  32.                 the following message will be displayed.

  34.                 SD3000.EXE is an overlay for PC Certify.

  36. PCCDOC.COM      On-line Manual for PC Certify.

  38. README.COM      On-line file for providing last minute information.

  40. LMSetup.EXE     CMOS Editing program to view and change standard
  41.                 CMOS settings.  This program will not work with PS/2
  42.                 MicroChannel computers.

  48. CMOSSAVE.EXE    The CMOSSAVE program saves the system CMOS data in a 
  49.                 file named CMOS.DAT.  This program should be run 
  50.                 to save CMOS memory once you have determined your system
  51.                 is working correctly.  Then create a diskette that includes
  52.                 CMOSREST.EXE and CMOS.DAT and store it in a safe place.
  53.                 If your CMOS battery fails or your CMOS memory is ever
  54.                 corrupted you will be able to use this diskette to 
  55.                 restore your system.

  57.                 If you have to use the restore program just once it
  58.                 will be worth its weight in gold.

  60. CMOSREST.EXE    The CMOSREST program will read the CMOS.DAT file and 
  61.                 replace the existing CMOS values with it.  See the
  62.                 CMOSSAVE.EXE description prior to using CMOSREST.EXE.

  76. WHAT IS PC CERTIFY?
  77.  
  78. PC Certify is an easy-to-use, end user, non-destructive diagnostic
  79. that identifies and tests all system devices: CPU, memory, video,
  80. keyboard, floppy drives, hard drives, controllers, and serial and
  81. parallel I/O ports.  PC Certify provides full system information,
  82. DOS environment, autoexec.bat and config.sys file contents,
  83. interrupt information with IRQ addresses, and BIOS text string
  84. information.  PC Certify also contains LMSetup, a CMOS editing
  85. program.

  87. You do not need to be a technician to use this program.  If you
  88. encounter a problem with your computer and need to call the technical
  89. support department at the manufacture or dealer, PC Certify will
  90. provide you with enough information to explain the problem and
  91. symptoms clearly.  This will save time and help them to provide you
  92. better service.

  96. PC Certify provides a complete suite of diagnostic tests and
  97. valuable system information.  No installation is required.  You may
  98. run PC Certify directly from your floppy drive or install the program
  99. to your hard disk drive.

  101. If you have more than one floppy disk drive, make sure to insert
  102. a blank formatted diskette in the drive prior to testing.  Don't
  103. worry, PC Certify will not destroy any data on your diskette.

  117. MODIFICATIONS AND ENHANCEMENTS TO PC CERTIFY
  118.  
  119. PC Certify version 5.1 has been updated to support the newest of
  120. the 486 PC architectures, extended memory managers (XMS), expanded
  121. memory managers (EMS), as well as, DOS 5.0 and DR DOS 6.0.  In
  122. addition testing of Video Display Systems containing up to 1MB of
  123. RAM are now tested.  These changes allow PC-Certify to operate in
  124. virtually any PC configuration including protected mode.

  126. PC Certify will now automatically detect IDE hard drives. If 
  127. an IDE hard drive is detected, PC Certify will access the 
  128. hard drive for its Model and Serial Numbers. These numbers are 
  129. then available for the customer database described above. If the 
  130. drives are not IDE, then the basic Cylinder, Head, and Sector
  131. information WITHOUT the Serial and Model number information are
  132. available in the database.

  140. PROBLEMS CORRECTED IN PC CERTIFY VERSION 5.1:
  141.  
  142. In previous releases of PC Certify running the PC Certify application in
  143. protected mode would violate certain protected mode memory managers.  In
  144. this version PC Certify will operate properly.
  145.  
  146. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
  147.  
  148. PLEASE NOTE: (PS/2 MODELS ONLY) The extended memory test will
  149. display SKIPPED when running this test without having a memory
  150. manager such as HIMEM.SYS loaded.  If you would like to test extended
  151. memory you must include an extended memory manager such as HIMEM.SYS in
  152. your config.sys file.  Consult your DOS and Memory manager documentation
  153. for the specific commands and syntax.

  155. PLEASE NOTE: (ON ALL MACHINES)  When running protected mode memory
  156. managers such as QEMM386, and 386max which place the computer into
  157. protected mode the testing of the CPU and DMA circuits is somewhat
  158. reduced.  PC Certify will operate with these managers, but will
  159. skip certain CPU tests and DMA tests.  The reason for this is
  160. simply that executing certain CPU instructions, access memory via
  161. the DMA channels cause Protected Mode Faults that halt the system. 
  162.  
  163. Landmark has thoroughly tested the operation of all its test with
  164. these memory managers installed, and will automatically skip the
  165. tests that will violate Protected Mode.  When this occurs the
  166. message SKIPPED will be display next to the associated tests.

  168. Landmark has included LMSetup in this release of PC Certify.
  169. LMSetup will allow you to view and modify only those values which are
  170. common to all BIOS implementations, as many BIOS chips have non-standard 
  171. features.

  173. AMI BIOS USERS ONLY:  LMSetup has an additional switch (/AMI) which 
  174. allows the editing of type 47 hard drives with AMI BIOS.  Although this
  175. feature has been tested quite extensively, we recommend running 
  176. CMOSSAVE.EXE prior to using this special switch.  This will enable you 
  177. to recover your current CMOS setting in the event of an incompatibility.
