- THE PC CERTIFY 5.1 RELEASE DISKETTE CONTAINS THE FOLLOWING FILES:
-
- CERTIFY.EXE This is the PC Certify executable program.
-
- SD3000.EXE Overlay Module used by PC Certify for diagnostic
- testing. If you attempt to run SD3000.exe
- the following message will be displayed.
-
- SD3000.EXE is an overlay for PC Certify.
-
- PCCDOC.COM On-line Manual for PC Certify.
-
- README.COM On-line file for providing last minute information.
-
- LMSetup.EXE CMOS Editing program to view and change standard
- CMOS settings. This program will not work with PS/2
- MicroChannel computers.
-
-
-
-
-
- CMOSSAVE.EXE The CMOSSAVE program saves the system CMOS data in a
- file named CMOS.DAT. This program should be run
- to save CMOS memory once you have determined your system
- is working correctly. Then create a diskette that includes
- CMOSREST.EXE and CMOS.DAT and store it in a safe place.
- If your CMOS battery fails or your CMOS memory is ever
- corrupted you will be able to use this diskette to
- restore your system.
-
- If you have to use the restore program just once it
- will be worth its weight in gold.
-
- CMOSREST.EXE The CMOSREST program will read the CMOS.DAT file and
- replace the existing CMOS values with it. See the
- CMOSSAVE.EXE description prior to using CMOSREST.EXE.
-
- INSTALL.EXE A program that will install PC Certify on your hard drive.

- If you have problems using the product, or you think it may be
- defective, you can contact Landmark at 1-800-683-0854 for technical
- assistance.
-
- WHAT IS PC CERTIFY?
-
- PC Certify is an easy-to-use, end user, non-destructive diagnostic
- that identifies and tests all system devices: CPU, memory, video,
- keyboard, floppy drives, hard drives, controllers, and serial and
- parallel I/O ports. PC Certify provides full system information,
- DOS environment, autoexec.bat and config.sys file contents,
- interrupt information with IRQ addresses, and BIOS text string
- information. PC Certify also contains LMSetup, a CMOS editing
- program.
-
- You do not need to be a technician to use this program. If you
- encounter a problem with your computer and need to call the technical
- support department at the manufacture or dealer, PC Certify will
- provide you with enough information to explain the problem and
- symptoms clearly. This will save time and help them to provide you
- better service.
-
-
-
- PC Certify provides a complete suite of diagnostic tests and
- valuable system information. No installation is required. You may
- run PC Certify directly from your floppy drive or install the program
- to your hard disk drive.
-
- If you have more than one floppy disk drive, make sure to insert
- a blank formatted diskette in the drive prior to testing. Don't
- worry, PC Certify will not destroy any data on your diskette.
-
- For help on other available options insert the certify diskette in the
- A: drive of your computer and type:
-
- A:\>certify /h
-
- To access the user & system database, which contains additional
- user and technical information type:
-
- A:\>certify &c
-
-
-
- MODIFICATIONS AND ENHANCEMENTS TO PC CERTIFY
-
- PC Certify version 5.1 has been updated to support the newest of
- the 486 PC architectures, extended memory managers (XMS), expanded
- memory managers (EMS), as well as, DOS 5.0 and DR DOS 6.0. In
- addition testing of Video Display Systems containing up to 1MB of
- RAM are now tested. These changes allow PC-Certify to operate in
- virtually any PC configuration including protected mode.
-
- PC Certify will now automatically detect IDE hard drives. If
- an IDE hard drive is detected, PC Certify will access the
- hard drive for its Model and Serial Numbers. These numbers are
- then available for the customer database described above. If the
- drives are not IDE, then the basic Cylinder, Head, and Sector
- information WITHOUT the Serial and Model number information are
- available in the database.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- PROBLEMS CORRECTED IN PC CERTIFY VERSION 5.1:
-
- In previous releases of PC Certify running the PC Certify application in
- protected mode would violate certain protected mode memory managers. In
- this version PC Certify will operate properly.
-
- SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
-
- PLEASE NOTE: (PS/2 MODELS ONLY) The extended memory test will
- display SKIPPED when running this test without having a memory
- manager such as HIMEM.SYS loaded. If you would like to test extended
- memory you must include an extended memory manager such as HIMEM.SYS in
- your config.sys file. Consult your DOS and Memory manager documentation
- for the specific commands and syntax.
-
- PLEASE NOTE: (ON ALL MACHINES) When running protected mode memory
- managers such as QEMM386, and 386max which place the computer into
- protected mode the testing of the CPU and DMA circuits is somewhat
- reduced. PC Certify will operate with these managers, but will
- skip certain CPU tests and DMA tests. The reason for this is
- simply that executing certain CPU instructions, access memory via
- the DMA channels cause Protected Mode Faults that halt the system.
-
- Landmark has thoroughly tested the operation of all its test with
- these memory managers installed, and will automatically skip the
- tests that will violate Protected Mode. When this occurs the
- message SKIPPED will be display next to the associated tests.
-
- Landmark has included LMSetup in this release of PC Certify.
- LMSetup will allow you to view and modify only those values which are
- common to all BIOS implementations, as many BIOS chips have non-standard
- features.
-
- AMI BIOS USERS ONLY: LMSetup has an additional switch (/AMI) which
- allows the editing of type 47 hard drives with AMI BIOS. Although this
- feature has been tested quite extensively, we recommend running
- CMOSSAVE.EXE prior to using this special switch. This will enable you
- to recover your current CMOS setting in the event of an incompatibility.
