  36. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

  40. *  Close any open applications.

  42. *  Insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive.  An interactive shell 
  43.    will begin automatically.

  45. *  Click the "Install Personal Edition" icon to run the
  46.    Install Wizard, and follow the instructions on your screen.

  48. *  To Uninstall Netscape Gold Personal Edition, select Settings|Control 
  49.    Panel from the Windows 95 Start Menu.  Then select Add / Remove 
  50.    Programs from the Control Panel.  Select Netscape Personal Edition 
  51.    Gold from the list of installed programs, and click the Add / Remove 
  52.    button.

  57. *  Close any open applications.

  82.    click "No" on the uninstaller's confirmation dialog.

  85. KNOWN PROBLEMS IN THIS RELEASE OF NETSCAPE GOLD PERSONAL EDITION

  87. INTERNET STARTUP

  89. * You must have at least a 256 color display.  If you do not have
  90.   a 256 color display, you may still install Netscape Personal 
  91.   Edition:
  92.  
  93.      From the Windows 3.1 Program Manager, select File | Run.  Under
  94.      Windows 95, select the Start Menu | Run.  Enter the command:
  95.  
  96.         D:\PEINSTL\SETUP.EXE
  97.  
  98.      If your CD-ROM is not installed on drive D:\, type the letter of
  99.      your CD-ROM drive instead of D:\.
  100.  
  101.  
  102. * You are required to install Netscape Navigator Personal Edition first,
  103.   before installing the accompanying plug-ins.
  104.  
  105. * When installing plug-ins, the Internet Startup Shell will search for
  106.   an installed Netscape.exe file. If this file is not found, you will
  107.   be prompted to 'Please locate your copy of Netscape Navigator
  108.   (Netscape.exe).  Select 'OK.'
  109.   Next, you will be prompted with a browsing dialog that will allow
  110.   you to search for the installed Netscape.exe file.  If you installed 
  111.   Netscape Navigator Personal Edition3.0 to its default location,
  112.   the .exe file can be found in the following directories:

  114.   Win3.1:
  115.         c:\Netscape\netscape.exe
  116.  
  117.   Win95:
  118.         c:\Program Files\Netscape\Navigator\Program\netscape.exe

  120.   Once you have located Netscape.exe, select it and hit 'OK.'  The install
  121.   process will begin for the selected plug-in.(after netscape.exe is found,
  122.   the shell will remember the location of the file unless you EXIT).

  136. *  If you run the PointCastNetwork's uninstaller, the PointCast Network
  137.    screen saver is not disabled.  To change your screen saver:

  139.      1. In the Main Program Group, select Control Panel.
  140.      2. Double-click on the Desktop icon.
  141.      3. Change the screen saver to (None) or select a different 
  142.         screen saver.
  143.      4. Click the OK button to save your Desktop preferences.

  146. EJECTING the CD:
  147.  
  148. *  Always press the Exit button to close Internet Startup.  Do not 
  149.    remove the CD from your CD-ROM drive while Internet Startup is 
  150.    running.  
  151.  
  152.    If you remove the CD while Internet Startup is still running,
  153.    Windows will display error dialogs.  Put the CD back into your
  154.    computer, and press the Enter key to dismiss any error dialogs.

  157. INSTALL WIZARD, ACCOUNT SETUP WIZARD, AND DIALER
  158.  
  159. *  Windows 3.1
  160.  
  161.  *  If you are upgrading from a previous version of Netscape Personal 
  162.     Edition, you should install Netscape Personal Edition in the same 
  163.     location as your old version.  The Install Wizard will prompt you 
  164.     to install on top of your previous version.
  165.  
  166.     If you choose to install in a different directory, you may find 
  167.     that you cannot log into your Internet Service Provider.  Follow 
  168.     these steps to log into your Internet account.
  169.  
  170.     1. In Program Manager, select your dialer file.  Select File | 
  171.        Properties.  The "Command Line" will show you the path to your 
  172.        dialer file.  (Your dialer file should have a file name that 
  173.        ends with ".SR" and should be in a directory called "dialer".)
  174.  
  175.     2. Change the path in the Command Line to point to your new dialer 
  176.        directory.  For example, if your old version was installed in a 
  177.        directory called "C:\OldStuff" and you installed Netscape 
  178.        Personal Edition 3.0 in "C:\NewStuff", you should change your 
  179.        command line from "C:\OldStuff\Dialer\MyISP.SR" to 
  180.        "C:\NewStuff\Dialer\MyISP.SR"
  181.  
  182.  
  183.    *  If Personal Edition 1.1 is installed on your system, the 
  184.       Install Wizard will ask you to deinstall Personal Edition 1.1.
  185.       Clicking the "Back" button will deinstall your old version of
  186.       Personal Edition.  If you do not wish to uninstall, click
  187.       Cancel.
  188.  
  189.    *  If your modem is not listed in Modem Wizard's list of modems, 
  190.       first try the Hayes compatible setting.  If the "Hayes compatible" 
  191.       setting does not work, try the "Generic" setting.
  192.  
  193.    *  By default, the dialer adds "1" plus the area code to numbers
  194.       outside your area code.
  195.  
  196.      To change this behavior:
  197.  
  198.       1. Double-click on your ISP's dialer icon.
  199.       2. Click the "Properties..." button.
  200.       3. The Locations tab should be displayed.  At the bottom of the 
  201.          dialog, there are two checkboxes.
  202.       4. Click the "Dial a 1 for long distance" checkbox to turn on 
  203.          or off dialing 1.
  204.       5. Click the "Dial area code" checkbox to turn on or off dialing 
  205.          the area code.

  207. *  Windows 95
  208.  
  209.    *  If you have configured Microsoft TCP/IP to use DNS (Domain Name
  210.       Service), you may not be able to connect to internet hosts through 
  211.       your Dial-Up Networking connection.  Your Dial-Up Networking 
  212.       connection contains its own fields for your ISP's name servers, 
  213.       which will be not be used if you have specified name servers in your
  214.       Microsoft TCP/IP configuration.
  215.   
  216.       The Account Setup Wizard will warn you if you have configured
  217.       Microsoft TCP/IP to use DNS.  If you see this warning, double-click
  218.       the Online Books icon in your Navigator program group.  Under "Tips, 
  219.       Techniques and Troubleshooting," for Windows 95 users, read the 
  220.       topic on "DNS configuration in Windows 95" to either modify or 
  221.       disable DNS.

  226. ABOUT YOUR NEW INTERNET ACCOUNT

  228.    After you use Netscape Personal Edition to create a new account on
  229.    an Internet Service Provider, you should be able to use your new
  230.    account immediately to read news and view pages on the World Wide

  269.   Gold prior to this release, you will get multiple uninstall entries
  270.   in your Add/Remove program.  If you prefer not having multiple 
  271.   entries, you should do an uninstall to remove your previous 
  272.   version of Netscape Navigator Gold before you install the new release.
