The Park is on the Potomac River between Cumberland, MD, and Washington, D.C. Ferry Hill House (Park Headquarters) is four miles west of Sharpsburg, MD, on MD 34. Visitor Centers are: Great Falls Canal Tavern Museum, 11710 MacArthur Blvd. Potomac, MD 20854; Hancock, MD, 326 E. Main Street; Western Maryland Railroad Station Center, Canal Street, Cumberland, MD.

  10. WHEN TO VISIT
  11. Towpath open year round, boat ride and mule-drawn canal boats operate mid-April to mid-October. Winters are cold, Summers are hot.

  13. POINTS OF INTEREST
  14. The Park follows the route of the 184-mile canal along the Potomac River between Cumberland, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. The canal was built between 1828 and 1850.

  17. Visitor Center; museum/exhibits; NPS guided tours; self-guiding tours/trails; picnic areas; campgrounds; group campsites; hiking; horseback riding; boating; boat rental; boat ramp; fishing; bicycle trail.

  19. GENERAL INFORMATION
  20. The canal museum is at Great Falls, Maryland, and a mule-drawn boat ride is at Georgetown and Great Falls Tavern. Hiking trails along the towpath follow the canal's entire length. Food and supplies are available at concessioners in the Park at Great Falls, Swains Lock, and Fletchers Boat House. Overnight accommodations are available in major urban areas along I-70.
