The Park is in the central part of the state by the Mississippi River. The Park is in Vicksburg on Highway US 80, within one mile of I-20.
WHEN TO VISIT
Open year round. Peak visitor month is August. Summers are hot and humid; Spring and Fall are warm and pleasant; Winters are mild.
POINTS OF INTEREST
Reconstructed forts and trenches evoke memories of the 47-day siege that ended in the surrender of the city on July 4, 1863. Victory gave the North control of the Mississippi River and cut the Confederacy in two. The Civil War ironclad gunboat USS Cairo and artifacts are on display. The Vicksburg National Cemetery--18,244 interments, 12,954 unidentified--is within the Park.
