  7. DIRECTIONS
  8. The Monument is in the southwestern part of the state, near the border of Wyoming. Highway US 16 crosses the northern part of the Park between Custer, SD, and Newcastle, WY. The Visitor Center is on Highway US 16, thirteen miles from Custer.

  10. WHEN TO VISIT
  11. Open year round. Cave tours available May to September. Peak visitor month is July. Climate: Winter, 0 to 34 degrees F; Summer, 85 to 92 degrees F.

  13. POINTS OF INTEREST
  14. Limestone caverns consist of a series of chambers connected by narrow passages, with fine calcite crystal encrustations. The cave is more than seventy-nine miles long.

  19. GENERAL INFORMATION
  20. The cave temperature is about 47 degrees, so wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes with non-slip soles. Cave trails include numerous stairs. Several campgrounds, food, supplies, and overnight accommodations are available in Custer or Newcastle, WY. Comanche Park Campground is seven miles east on US 16. Other interesting sites in the general area include: Wind Cave National Park, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Custer State Park, Badlands National Park, and Devils Tower National Monument.
