  8. Go south on Highway ZZ two miles to the Visitor Center. The Battlefield is in the southwestern part of the state near Springfield. The site is three miles east of Republic and ten miles southwest of Springfield. Take I-44 to MM Highway (Exit 70). Go south six and three-quarters mile to Highway 60. Go straight on M Highway to State Highway ZZ.

  11. Open year round. Peak visitor month is June. Summers are hot and humid; Winters are cold with snow.

  13. POINTS OF INTEREST
  14. The battle here on August 10, 1861, was the first major engagement west of the Mississippi. Confederates were not able to take advantage of their superior numbers, allowing Union troops to retreat and regroup; this was the turning point in keeping Missouri in the Union. Major features include a new five-mile automobile tour loop, the restored 1852 Ray House, and "Bloody Hill."

Food, supplies, and overnight accommodations are available in Republic and Springfield. Campgrounds are also available in Springfield. Nearby points of interest include: Buffalo National River, Pea Ridge National Military Park, Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Fort Scott National Historical Site, and the George Washington Carver National Monument.
