  8. The Monument is in the southwestern part of the state, close to the South Dakota border. The Park is adjacent to the city of Pipestone (Highway 75). From Sioux Falls, SD, take I-90 east, then go north on Highway 75. A State Information Center is at Beaver Creek (off I-90).

  10. WHEN TO VISIT
  11. Open year round. Peak visitor month is July. Winters are cold and snowy; Summers are hot and humid; Spring and Fall are pleasant.

  13. POINTS OF INTEREST
  14. From this quarry Indians obtained materials for making pipes used in ceremonies. Although George Catlin, the painter, was not the first white person to visit the quarries, he was the first person to describe them in print. Pipestone is known as Catlinite in his honor. The Park includes the Upper Midwest Indian Cultural Center, which provides space for craftsmen to display their work and for demonstrations of traditional crafts to take place.

  20. Overnight camping facilities are available at Split Rock Creek State Park, Route 2, Jasper; and Blue Mounds State Park, Route 1, Luverne. Food, supplies, and overnight accommodations are available in Pipestone.
