  8. The Monument is in the south-central part of the state. The Visitor Center is on US Highway 70-82, fifteen miles southwest of Alamogordo.

  11. Open year round. Peak visitor month is July. Summers are hot, Winters are mild.

  13. POINTS OF INTEREST
  14. The Park contains a significant portion of the world's largest gypsum dunefield. The glistening white dunes rise 60 feet high and cover 275 square miles. Small animals have adapted to this harsh environment by developing light, protective coloration. Plants have also adapted, elongating their stems to remain atop the ever-shifting dunes.

  19. GENERAL INFORMATION
  20. Only primitive backcountry camping is available, but requires permission at Headquarters. Camping facilities are available in Lincoln National Forest (thirty-five miles to east) and at Aquirre Springs (thirty miles to west). Commercial campgrounds are available in Alamogordo, Las Cruces, and Oliver Lee Memorial State Park. Food, supplies, and overnight accommodations are available in Alamogordo. The Monument has a gift shop where snacks may be purchased. Points of interest in Alamogordo include: the New Tombaugh Omni Space Theater, and the International Space Hall of Fame.
