  8. The Monument is in the western part of the state. Go forty-two miles west of Grants (on I-40) on NM 53.

  10. WHEN TO VISIT
  11. Open year round. Mesa Top Trail closed in Winter when snow is heavy. Peak visitor month is August. Summer temperatures average 70 to 80 degrees F; Winter temperatures average 30 to 50 degrees F.

  13. POINTS OF INTEREST
  14. "Inscription Rock" is a soft sandstone monolith, rising 200 feet above the valley floor, on which are carved hundreds of inscriptions. The Monument also includes pre-Columbian petroglyphs and Pueblo Indian ruins.

  19. GENERAL INFORMATION
  20. Ever since 1605 when Spaniard Juan de Onate scratched his name at the base of a cliff, other desert travelers added their inscriptions to the pre-Columbian carvings. Two miles of hiking trails, plus the Mesa Top Trail that goes over the mesa top, are available. Food and supplies are available in Ramah, Grants, and Gallup. Overnight accommodations are available in Grants and Gallup. Dogs must be kept on a leash.
