  7. DIRECTIONS
  8. The Park is in the northwestern part of the state. East of Gallup, on US 66/I 40, turn north at Thoreau onto NM 57, and drive sixty miles to Chaco Canyon. (The last twenty miles to the Visitor Center are not paved. If driving from the north, turn off NM 44, seven miles south of Blanco, at Blanco Trading Post or Nageezi Trading Post. Go twenty-nine miles on NM 57 to Park Headquarters. (This road is also unpaved.)

  10. WHEN TO VISIT
  11. Open year round. Peak visitor month is August. Summers are hot with possible thunderstorms. Winter is cold with possible snow.

  13. POINTS OF INTEREST
  14. The canyon, with hundreds of smaller ruins, contains 13 major Indian ruins unsurpassed in the United States, representing the highest point of Pueblo pre-Columbian civilization. Original name was Chaco Canyon National Monument.

  17. Visitor Center; museum/exhibits; NPS guided tours; self-guiding tours/trails; picnic areas; campgrounds; group campsites; backcountry use; hiking; snowmobile route.

  19. GENERAL INFORMATION
  20. Five self-guiding trails go through several ruins. Four backcountry trails start at the trailhead. Campsites are one mile from the Visitor Center. Food and supplies are available at the Blanco and Nageezi Trading Posts in Crownpoint. Overnight accommodations are available in Thoreau, Bloomfield, and Farmington.
