  7. DIRECTIONS
  8. The Area is in the northern part of the state close to Redding. The Whiskeytown headquarters is on Highway 299, off I-5. The Area is about sixty miles west of Lassen Volcanic National Park.

  11. Open year round. Peak visitor month is August. Cold in Winter, warm in Summer.

  13. POINTS OF INTEREST
  14. Whiskeytown Unit, with its mountainous backcountry and large reservoir, provides a multitude of outdoor recreation opportunities, as well as remains of buildings built during the Gold Rush. Shasta and Trinity Units are administered by Forest Service, U.S. Dept of Agriculture.

  17. Visitor Center; NPS guided tours; self-guiding tours/trails; picnic areas; campgrounds; group campsites; backcountry use; hiking; horseback riding; swimming; bathhouse; boating; boat rental; boat ramp; fishing; hunting.

  19. GENERAL INFORMATION
  20. Three lakes provide many recreational activities. This is Gold Rush country, plan to do some gold panning. Numerous campsites, cabins, and houseboats are available. The Overlook Information Station or Headquarters has information about the recreation area and programs. The summit of Shasta Bally (6,209 feet) may be reached by four-wheel drive or hiking.
