  7. DIRECTIONS
  8. The Monument is near the Oregon border. Headquarters is thirty miles south of Tulelake, CA (twenty-six miles off California Highway 139); fifty-eight miles south of Klamath Falls, OR; and twenty-six miles north of Canby, CA. Daily Amtrak and air service is provided to Klamath Falls.

  10. WHEN TO VISIT
  11. The Monument is open year round, the Visitor Center is open during Summer. Peak visitor month is August. Climate: January, 16 to 40 degrees F; July, 52 to 88 degrees F. Average annual precipitation, 16 - 32 inches. Expect snow during Winter and moderate Summers.

  13. POINTS OF INTEREST
  14. Volcanic activity spewed forth molten rock and lava here creating an incredibly rugged landscape--a natural fortress used by the Indians in the Modoc Indian War, 1872-73.

  20. Food, supplies, and overnight accommodations are available in Tulelake, Klamath Falls, and Merrill, OR. Care should be taken when exploring the lava tubes due to steep trails, stairways, and low ceilings. Wear protective headgear and take more than one light source. Rattlesnakes live around the Monument.
