The Monument is located on the border with Utah in the eastern part of the state. The Monument may be reached by Highway 395, west of Death Valley, to connect with Highways 190 or 136. US 95, east of Death Valley, connects with Highways 267, 374, and 373. I-15, south of Death Valley, connects with Highway 127.
WHEN TO VISIT
Open year round. Peak visitor month is April. Climate: January, 32 to 64 degrees F; July, 84 to 120 degrees F. Average annual precipitation, 0 - 8 inches. Extreme heat may be expected during Summer; cooler with snow at high elevations during Winter. Flash flooding and rainstorms occur during Winter and Summer.
POINTS OF INTEREST
This large desert, nearly surrounded by high mountains, contains the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere. The area includes Scotty's Castle, the grandiose home of a famous prospector, and other remnants of gold and borax mining.
Never travel alone. Always carry water to drink and for the car. Be alert for flash floods. Pick up Hot Weather Hints at distribution boxes at entrances of the Monument, the Visitor Center, or at Ranger Stations. Salt Creek Nature Trail is handicap accessible. Pick up a copy of Camping in Death Valley at the Visitor Center or Ranger Stations. Overnight accommodations and meals are available at Furnace Creek and Stove Pipe Wells. Meals available at Scotty's Castle. Food, supplies, and overnight facilities are available at Beatty, Shoshone, and Trona. The nearest hospitals are in Lone Pine, Las Vegas, or Tonopah.
