The Park is in the northwestern part of the state at the Canadian border. The Park is about thirty-five miles northeast of Kalispell on Highway US 2. Many Glacier and St. Mary on the eastern border can be reached by Highway US 89. Waterton Lakes can be reached via US 89 and Montana Highway 17 on the eastern side. Amtrak (Chicago-Seattle) stops at East Glacier and West Glacier; airports are at Kalispell and Lethbridge, Alberta.
WHEN TO VISIT
Visitor Center at St. Mary's open year round. Going-to-the-Sun Road open mid-June to mid-October; Chief Mountain International Highway open mid-May to mid-September. Peak visitor month is July. Climate: January, -44 to 27 degrees F; July, 47 to 79 degrees F. Seasonal snowfall may exceed 1,000 inches in some areas.

With precipitous peaks ranging above 10,000 feet, this ruggedly beautiful land includes nearly 50 glaciers, many lakes and streams, a wide variety of wildflowers, and wildlife. In 1932, Waterton Lakes National Park and Glacier National Park was declared the first International Peace Park. The Flathead River, a noted spawning stream, courses along the western boundary of Glacier National Park.
