The Area is in the southern part of the state on the Wyoming border. Take Highway MT 313 from Hardin, MT (forty-three miles) to reach the north end of the Area; or Highway WY 14A from Lovell, WY (thirteen miles). The Visitor Center is at Lovell, Highway US 310.
WHEN TO VISIT
Open year round. Peak visitor month is July. Climate: January, 8 to 36 degrees F; July, 75 to 92 degrees F. Summers are warm with average temperature in the 80s; Winters are cold with frequent snow.
POINTS OF INTEREST
Bighorn Lake, formed by Yellowtail Dam on the Bighorn River, extends seventy-one miles, including fifty-five miles through spectacular Bighorn Canyon. The Crow Indian Reservation borders a large part of the area.
Year-round activities may be enjoyed in the Area. Historic and archaeological sites, exposed fossils in the steep canyon, and wildlife are found in the Area. Food, supplies, and overnight accommodations are available in Fort Smith, MT, Hardin, MT, Lovell, WY. Meals are served in the Area at Horseshoe Bend and OK-14-Beh.
