The Battlefield is in the southwestern part of the state, close to the Idaho border. Take I-15 southwest from Butte to Divide, then go ten miles west of Wisdom on Highway MT 43. From Salmon, ID, go north on Highway US 93, turn east on MT 43 to the Visitor Center.
WHEN TO VISIT
Open from June 1 through Labor Day. Peak visitor month is July. Climate: January, -8 to 28 degrees F; July, 70 to 84 degrees F. Winters are cold and snowy; Summers are nice and warm.
POINTS OF INTEREST
Nez Perce' Indians and U.S. Army troops fought here in 1877--a dramatic episode in the struggle to confine the Nez Perce' to the reservation.
The Big Hole Battlefield Trail follows the route of the Nez Perce' War for twenty-two-and-one-half miles. Food, supplies, and overnight accommodations are available in Wisdom, Butte, Hamilton, and Salmon, ID. May Creek (seven miles) has a campground. Cross-country skiing can be enjoyed during the Winter.
