  8. The Park is in northwestern Idaho, a few miles east of Lewiston. Spalding is located at the intersection of Highways 12 and 95.

  11. Open year round. Peak visitor month is August. Winters are cold and snowy, Summers are hot and dry.

  13. POINTS OF INTEREST
  14. The history and culture of the Nez Perce' Indian country are preserved, commemorated, and interpreted here. Four federally-owned sites are administered by the National Park Service, and 20 sites through cooperative agreements.

  19. GENERAL INFORMATION
  20. In 1836 Henry and Eliza Spalding, with Marcus and Narcissa Whitman, traveled the Oregon Trail as missionaries to the Indians. The Spaldings established the Lapwai Mission Station serving the Nez Perce' Indians. In 1877, the U.S. Army, under pressure from the settlers, tried to force the Nez Perce' Indians to move from their home in the Wallowa Mountains to the Lapwai Reservation. The Indians resisted and crushed the troops in the White Bird Canyon battle. Soon forced to retreat, Chief Joseph led his people across the Lolo Mountain trail to Canada. In October, near the Canadian border, they surrendered.
