  5. The double bass is the largest of the string instruments and can produce the lowest range of tones.  Its strings are tuned in fourths:  E1 - A1 - D - G.

  7. Today, many double basses have a fifth string tuned to the C tone.  As this instrument is as tall as its player, it is played by standing or sometimes by sitting on a very high stool.
