The Cornet is not a Trumpet, although it resembles it in almost all respects. However, it is much smaller (35 cm.) than the Trumpet (48 cm.). The Cornet is a closer descendant of the Horn and, in fact, it is capable of producing a warmth which only resembles the Horn's warm tones. The Cornet seems to have been invented in France at about 1825, in order to supplement the Trumpets and to fill the brass harmonies.
Like the Trumpet, the standard Cornet used is in B flat, and has a slide with which it can be changed to A.
The Cornet is not a regular member of the symphonic orchestra and is used only on special occasions.
