  5. This term is used to designate the colors by which the different instruments can be identified.  It also means tone quality, not only of individual instruments, but also of any combination of instruments.

  7. Hermann von Helmholtz (1821-1894) was one of the first to show that the timbre of any instrument was determined by its harmonics (overtones) and their relative prominence over others.
