This term has two meanings:
(1) a short instrumental composition, which opens an opera or oratorio, or the music played before
the curtain goes up; and
(2) an instrumental composition bearing the characteristics of an opera overture, but intended as an
independent piece.
Overtures which are played before the second to last acts are usually called preludes.
