  5. A chord is formed by three or more notes, which are sounded together at the same time.  The manner in which chords are used in a musical composition determines the style of the period or of the composer.

  7. The simplest chords were constructed by placing intervals of thirds on top of one another.  The most basic chords are the triads; their inversions may be seen in the example.
