The term is derived from the Italian "Ballare", which means "to dance".  It is used to designate a theatrical dance performance, which is danced by a group of dancers with appropriate costumes and scenery, and instrumental accompaniment.  Famous ballets include Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker", "Swan Lake" and "Sleeping beauty", and Stravinsky's "Petroushka" and "Firebird".
