The Battle of Little Bighorn
Chronological: Describes a sequence of events and uses them to illustrate a point, identify trends, and draw conclusions.
Example: Events leading up to Custer's infamous Last Stand.
Comparison-Contrast: Identifies two or more seemingly unrelated subjects or events and uses their similarities or differences to illustrate a topic or prove a point.
Example: Custer vs. Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse: How superior military tactics led to an Indian victory at Little Bighorn
Cause and Effect: A type of analysis used in both the social and physical sciences, which shows how a series of facts of occurrences lead to a certain end result. Can be used to explain past events as well as to predict future ones.
Example: The discovery of gold led to a showdown between US and Sioux forces at Little Bighorn.
Topical/Classify & Analyze: Identifies a cluster of points or events which illustrate a common theme, event, or conclusion.
Example: Little Bighorn was just one of many examples of distrust and misunderstanding between the US government and the Plains Indian tribes.
Problem-Solution/Process Analysis: Begins with the statement of a problem, then goes on to identiy and analyze possible solutions. May also involve the making of recommendations for how to deal more effectively with the same situation in the future.
Example: How could the slaughter of the 7th Cavalry have been avoided?
Question-Answer/Opinion-Reason: Starts with an opinion or question, then goes on to develop evidence to support its validity or provide a persuasive explanation.
Example: Crazy Horse's military genius makes him the true hero of Little Bighorn.
