** The All-New, Improved **
** **
** MARILYN MANSON FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS LISTING **
** **
** revised 9/20/96 **
******************************************************************
Q: Who is/are Marilyn Manson?
A: Marilyn Manson is a five-piece hard rock band from the Fort Lauderdale
area of southern Florida. Founded in 1989-90 as Marilyn Manson and the
Spooky Kids, they switched to the shorter name in 1992. The original
line-up was: Marilyn Manson, vocals; Daisy Berkowitz, lead guitar/drum
machine programming; Olivia Newton-Bundy, bass; Zsa Zsa Speck, keyboards;
and an unnamed drum machine. Zsa Zsa and Olivia were replaced early on by
Gidget Gein, bass, and Madonna Wayne Gacy, keyboards. The drum machine was
replaced in 1991 by Sara Lee Lucas. Bassist Gein was replaced in December
1993 by Twiggy Ramirez, formerly with Florida metal band Amboog-A-Lard,
and drummer Lucas was replaced in March 1995 by Ginger Fish. Daisy Berkowitz
annouced his resignation from the band in May of 1996. His replacement,
renamed Zim Zum, is from Chicago; his previous credits include guitar for
Life Sex and Death.
Q: What are the sources of their names?
o Mr. Manson - Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson.
o Daisy Berkowitz - Daisy Duke ("Dukes of Hazzard" TV series) and
David Berkowitz (the "Son of Sam" killer, a/k/a "Mr. 44" and "Mister
Monster").
o Zsa Zsa Speck - Zsa Zsa Gabor (known for simply being Zsa Zsa) and
Richard Speck (killer of student nurses)
o Olivia Newton Bundy - Olivia Newton John (Australian pretty-girl singer)
and Ted Bundy (arrested in FL, and finally executed in that state in
Feb. of 1989)
o Gidget Gein - Gidget (surfer girl heroine of 60's TV/movie series) and Ed
Gein (famed Wisconsin cannibal psycho).
o Madonna Wayne Gacy - Madonna (the singer/actress, not the Virgin Mary) and
John Wayne Gacy (executed murderer of 33 boys, a/k/a kids' party entertainer
Pogo the Clown)
o Sara Lee Lucas - Sara Lee (of baked goods fame) and Henry Lee Lucas (accused
mass-murderer).
o Twiggy Ramirez - Twiggy ('60's Mod model) and Richard Ramirez (the "Night
Stalker").
o Ginger Fish - Ginger Rogers (dancer/actress -- Ginger himself has suggested
famed drummer Ginger Baker, but that would miss the point, Baker being male)
and Albert Fish (executed cannibal child-killer).
o Zim Zum - Breaking the mold of previous names, this one derives from the
Cabala, an ancient Hebrew mystical work. It literally means "extraction" and
refers to the action of God in withdrawing his presence from an area of
primordial space to as to make room for the Creation.
Q: What, exactly, sort of "hard rock" do they play?
A: Attempts to pigeonhole MM are essentially futile. While they're influenced
by such 70's performers as KISS, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, Iggy and
Bowie, it's simplistic to label them shock-rock, metal or glam. Suggestions
have included "hard alternative", "industrial-metal," "alternametal," and
"sleazy industro-crunch"; Daisy himself suggested "psycho punk-metal."
Considering their reliance on computerized samples, they might even be said
to connect with hip-hop or house music, at least to the same degree as
White Zombie or PWEI. For the purposes of this FAQ, however, no label will
be established, as none is truly accurate.
Q: What's their basic history?
A: Thumbnail version: Founded by Manson and Berkowitz in 1989, they acquired
a local following by combining original material and a highly visual,
theatrical stage show with imaginative self-promotional work. Mr. Manson
created flyers and brochures to be handed out at the band's shows, they
played live on local radio, and issued a series of self-produced cassette
releases of their material. (These were sold only at their shows and
through a few local record stores, and are now quite collectable, especially
as they contain songs not yet available elsewhere.) Consistently garnering
enough fan votes to compete in South Florida's SLAMMIE Awards, they were
regularly nominated for Band of the Year - a title they won two years
running, in 1993 and 1994 - and Best Hard Alternative Band. More recently,
they've picked up awards in the 1996 SLAMMIES for Best Band, Best Video,
and Best Record. (Anyone know if they got anything in '94 and/or '95?)
Previously, they also picked up the top prize at the 1992 Florida Jammy
Awards -- Entertainer of the Year. In 1996 they were nominated for "Best
Hard Rock Video" at MTV's Video Music Awards for "Sweet Dreams". They drew
the attention of Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor quite early, in
1990, when they opened (with Meat Beat Manifesto) for NiN in Florida.
Manson and Reznor became friends and kept in touch over the next few years,
exchanging tapes of their music. When Reznor offered them a slot on NiN's
"Self Destruct '94" spring tour and on his newly formed label, nothing,
they accepted both. (They were the first band signed to nothing, which now
also houses Prick, Coil, and Pop Will Eat Itself.) Their first release was
the single "Get Your Gunn," released 6/9/94 on nothing/Interscope, followed
by the LP "Portrait of an American Family" on 7/12/94. After both the band
and Reznor expressed dissatisfaction with the original recording of
"Portrait," which apparently polished and smoothed much of the character
out of the band's sound, Reznor took over as executive producer and moved
the band into LA's Record Plant, where the final released version was
created.
Since the release of POAAF, the band has toured virtually nonstop, both as
an opening act and as headliners. Dates follow:
4/?/94 - 6/?/94 scattered dates on club tour opening for NIN
7/29/94 - 12/11/94 opening for Nine Inch Nails
12/27/94 - 12/31/94 four headlining dates in Florida
1/11/95 - 3/11/95 headlining tour (Monster Voodoo Machine as support)
3/24/95 - 5/14/95 opening for Danzig (with Korn)
6/1 - 2/95 two headlining dates in Louisiana
9/12/95 - 12/17/95 headlining tour (Clutch as support)
12/28 - 29/95 two headlining dates in Cleveland (Johnny Skilsaw
as support)
12/31/95 - 2/4/96 headlining on East Coast and in the Midwest
(Lunachicks and various as support)
10/04/96 - ?/?/97 headlining

promo edition.

Minute of Decay; The Refecting God; Man That You Fear
Q: How can I tell what version of Smells Like Children I'm about to buy in
the used CD store?
A: All promo copies are stamped as such on the cover, and, in addition, have
'for promotional use only' printed on the disk. The cover and track
listings as printed on the sleeve are identical to the regular release -
i.e., "Abuse (part 1 & 2)" are *not* listed on the recalled version - to
separate this from the more common promo is a bit tricky, but can be done.
Look at the shiny side of the CD--around the center ring are numbers.
The regular release is 3 92641-2 RE-1 SRC**01 M1S2
The regular promo is 3 92641-2 RE-1 SRC**1 M1S1
The recalled promo is 3 92641-2 SRC##01 M1S1
Q: I've heard that there are differences in the printing on the actual disk
of POAAF...
A: The differences are in the color that is used for the lettering on the
disk itself--the following colors have been reported to date: light blue,
dark blue, purple, green, and pink. This is a minor matter, but in the day
and age of CDs, it may become a point of collectability, much like colored
vinyl did.
Q: What other promos exist?
A: White cover promos definitely known to exist:
"Get Your Gunn" (High School Drop-outs), nothing/Interscope PRCD 5781-2.
One track only. Also known: (Edited for Television) version, PRCD 5722-2,
also one track only. It's not known at this time if these are different
mixes, or identical versions with different names.
"Get Your Gunn" nothing/Interscope PRCD 5697-2 Same track listing as the
regular issue; the main differences with this promo are with the
cover/disk printing. The disk itself has black lettering instead of dark
green, and is labeled as a promo. No front cover, the back cover is white
and at the top it says "for promotional use only" in the same lettering
as the lyrics of POAAF. Below that is a b&w picture of the band, and a
b/w version of the commercial release's cover. Track listing below photos.
"Lunchbox" (High School Drop-outs), nothing/Interscope PRCD 5961. Tracks
besides the given title are Lunchbox (LP version) and Down in the Park.
- Note the use of the "High School Drop-outs" title to signify an edited
version in both instances, though there's no other appearance of the
HSD version of "Get Your Gunn."
"Dope Hat" nothing/Interscope PRCD-6517. Contains Dope Hat (LP version),
Diary of a Dope Fiend (EP version), and Dance of the Dope Fiends (remix).
"Sweet Dreams" nothing/Interscope PRCD 6643. One track, promo only
release.
"Antichrist Superstar" nothing/Interscope INT5P-6042 A60803Ca
One track, promo release only - no printing (other that the number) on
the CD, no back or front insert - identified only by handwritten tape
labels on the disk itself--"Antichrist Superstar"
"Studio A-New Orleans" This version is slightly different than what appears
on the album.
"The Beautiful People" nothing/Interscope INT5P-6052 A60821Na
Has two versions of The Beautiful People - Clean version, and LP version.
Promo release only. No front cover, b/w back.
There are rumored to be vinyl promo releases for both
"Lunchbox" and "Get Your Gunn"; anyone with further *direct*
knowledge of their existence or non-existence please e-mail me
- address at the end of the FAQ.
( This one is for all you fuck heads out there! Some think its
true and I think there fucking DUMB ASSES! )
