[HDNG]IN COLLEGE:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]A1[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] Self-catering: 55% [BULL] Cost: ú25.87-ú29.26 (38-52wks)[ESTAT][PARA][BOLD]Availability:[EBOLD] Students have just 3 choices: live in college rooms with limited cooking facilities; try to get into the University's PRS (Property Rental System) where the University acts as a landlord, renting out shared housing at ú29 a week plus bills ([ITAL]nice life if you can get it[EITAL], but there are only 528 places); or live out. 1st years choose the first 2 options as can 1/2 the finalists and 15% of 2nd years, so that 7 out of every 10 students are housed in some form of [ITAL]solid, functional and often good[EITAL] accommodation. There are a few double rooms, but it's rare to share. [ITAL]The colleges, built in a subtle shade of John Major-grey, are all near the lake and can look superb in summer, but woeful in winter.[EITAL] Fairfax House, off campus, includes breakfast, [ITAL]but lacks atmosphere. [EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Catering:[EBOLD] Whether students live in or out, they can take part in their college's catering service, [ITAL]shovelling the stodge[EITAL] in the dining halls. Or, they can buy meals in the snack bars. Or cook for themselves -[ITAL] a diet-inducing prospect, as the shared facilities[EITAL] are a 'fridge and Baby Belling for 8-10 rooms.[PARA][BOLD]Car parking:[EBOLD] Parking is limited (permit required) and 1st years aren't allowed cars on campus, unless medically necessary. The standard is adequate, some is even very good, especially on Heslington Road and in Heworth, all close to the campus. Tang Hall is a bit rough and Osbaldwick is too far. Cars are difficult to park around town and unnecessary for getting around.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Housing help:[EBOLD] The University Accommodation Office runs a [ITAL]good [EITAL]service for students in PRS, but other help is limited to a vacancies notice board (also in SU) and contract negotiation.
