These fall into 3 choices: firstly, the self-catering halls, 1 at Redland (145 places) and 2 at St Matthias (80); secondly, 250 University-owned houses and flats in and around the city with space for 400 students; or finally, the 2 student villages at Frenchay (552 places) which are self-catering houses shared between 7 students each. The main problem with the student villages is their distance from the city centre (5 miles) and from shops (a mile to the supermarket). A few rooms are shared, but only about 3%. Early birds catch the homeliest nests and the later foragers can end up in fairly dumpy dives, paying over the odds, but it's better than cardboard. Although local relations are quite good, some areas of Bristol are rough 'n' tough, such as St Paul's and St George's where drug dealers run their trade on the street corners.[EITAL] [ITAL] [EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL] recommends a thorough preliminary investigation with the 'granny test' (send an old lady alone down the street in question - if they reach the end, it's inhabitable). Areas worth trying include Bishopston, Cotham, Clifton and Redland.
