[HDNG]INTRODUCTION:[EHDNG][PARA][BULL] The College is part of University of Oxford and students are entitled to use its facilities.[EBOLD][PARA]Much nearer the King's Arms (on the opposite side of Holywell Street) than Carfax chippy (500yds), though still in the very centre of Oxford, next to the Bodleian. [ITAL]Hertford has had a rocky history,[EITAL] going bankrupt, collapsing, changing name (previous incarnations include Hart Hall and Magdalen Hall) and going bankrupt again. Now, however, it's far from broke. It was one of the first colleges to admit women and make entrance exams optional. Traditionally, it has welcomed more students from state education than any other college and even, by 'eck, northerners. The college is built of mellow stone around 3 quads, [ITAL]attractive [EITAL]buildings, but [ITAL]unremarkable by Oxford standards, although there is the famous and magnificent[EITAL] Bridge of Sighs. There are also 2 more modern blocks, 1 on the college's main site and Abingdon House, a residential block a few minutes walk away.[PARA][PARA]Bar [ITAL](where allegedly more beer is drunk per student than at any other Oxford college)[EITAL]; [ITAL]strong [EITAL]drama and music; Baring Room (cap 250) is 1 of the best venues in any Oxford College; bop in bar 3-4 times a term (125). [ITAL]Mildly left wing[EITAL]. Anglican chapel; library (32,000 books); 6 computers. [ITAL]Sporty[EITAL], [ITAL]excelling [EITAL]in football; boat-house 10mins by bike. All 1st and 3rd years live in and 1/3 of 2nd years; self catering available; cafeteria.
