In the case of the University, there are 2 (or 3) tardises: the City Site in the city centre, the largest site and, if the truth be known, the main one; and the more modern Clifton site, 4 miles from the centre, and next to Clifton Hall, a [ITAL]stunning [EITAL]large Georgian manor, which houses the University's education faculty.[HDNG]ATMOSPHERE:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]Students are scattered geographically, because most live out and because they're spread across both sites. But students from the 2 sites mingle, despite the fact that both can look after themselves very well, thank you. Thriving fun, organised by the Union ents department, means there's no excuse for students to feel out of it. Students are lively, enthusiastic and not averse to friendliness with the locals nor a little politics - the Christian Union constitutes a political faction.[EITAL][PARA][PARA][ITAL][HDNG]THE SITES:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA][BOLD]City Site:[EBOLD] (art, business, environmental, law, social sciences, engineering) Just on the edge of the city centre, the University's main campus, with 7,500 students, is a jumble of [ITAL]lovely [EITAL]converted (3/4 storey) terraces, tower blocks (such as the main Newton Building) and slabs of [ITAL]dirty [EITAL]concrete with [ITAL]sparse [EITAL]green areas between. The Union's main centre is in a block designed as a swimming pool complex. [ITAL] It's an ugly building, but the lively atmosphere endears it to the regulars. [EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Clifton Campus: [EBOLD](humanities, science) 4 miles away on a hill overlooking the River Trent and its valley, Clifton is [ITAL]a small, friendly, modern site offering so many opportunities, students can get isolated from city life.[EITAL] 6,000 students are based at this site near where D H Lawrence set 'Sons and Lovers'.[PARA][BOLD]Clifton Hall:[EBOLD] (education) Georgian manor with views of the Trent, 1/2 mile from the Clifton Campus.[HDNG]THE CITY:[EHDNG][PARA][STAT][BULL] Population: 261,500 [BULL] London: 117miles [BULL] Birmingham: 47miles [BULL] Loughborough: 13miles[ESTAT][PARA][ITAL]The University atmosphere reflects the surrounding town which is also a bustling hustle of rustle and fun to suit all tastes[EITAL]. It has got its dank and squalid corners, but the main areas with shops galore and developments like the Victoria Centre are clean, spacious and filled with [ITAL]beautiful [EITAL]Victorian buildings. Areas such as Hockley, among others, offer trendy little bars, trendy little designer shops and trendy big 2nd hand markets. Some of the [ITAL]daintiest [EITAL]features include the Goose Fair every October (the largest temporary fun fair in Europe), the famous old lace market (an old quarter of the city where lace is still sold wholesale), Nottingham Castle (more of a mansion really), Slab Square for sitting amidst pigeons, and 'Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem' and 'Salutation Inn', 2 of the country's oldest pubs.
