There are also 500 places available for 1st years in self-catering flats, but most of these go to mature and married students. Almost all 1st years take up the opportunity, leaving space for about 15% of other students. [ITAL] The community atmosphere in halls is very strong [EITAL]and there is always a friendly rivalry with inter-hall competitions and so on. About 4% of places are shared and 5 halls are single sex only (2 men's, 3 women's).
