Some London pubs water down their ridiculously expensive beer (sometimes over ú2 a pint), but one of the few sparkles in your glass is the rise of the Weatherspoon chain, dedicated to good ale and food, at superb prices (regular 99p a pint specials). Look for the blue and gold livery. The National Theatre on the South Bank is cheaper and features some of the country's top talent. Also, don't forget the Fringe (the collective title for all the smaller theatres around town, ranging from back rooms at pubs to full size auditoria)[ITAL] where you can often see high quality at low cost.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos: [EBOLD][ITAL] [EITAL]Although London clubs are always at the very nub of any fashion scene, you pay for the privilege. At top nightspots, admission starts at around ú5 and drinks can be anything up to 5 times pub prices. There is, however, an ever-changing set of cheaper hang-outs where the latest sounds are available without the latest prices. [ITAL] [EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: Heaven (mostly gay); Camden Palace; Maximus; Ministry of Sound; Fridge; Subterania. These are the venues; individual events move between clubs, and disappear like cliches in the night, so don't blame [EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH] [ITAL]if our recommendations for Smashing, Pleased, Billion Dollar Babes and Kinky Gerlinky send them off into the memory-zone of the groove.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Cabaret: [EBOLD]London is a hot-bed of alternative laugh-mongers[ITAL]. [EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: There's the just-moved Comedy Store or, more cheaply, Jongleurs (Camden, Battersea, Shepherds Bush), East Dulwich Cabaret, Hackney Empire and many, many more.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Music venues: [EBOLD]Many of the country's biggest and most famous, including Wembley Stadium and Arena, Hammersmith Apollo (was the Odeon), The Marquee, The Forum (was the Town and Country), The Garage (was TandC 2), The Astoria, The Hackney Empire, The Brixton Academy, The New Cross Venue, as well as innumerable pubs, warehouses, cardboard boxes, and, of course, Tube stations.[PARA][PARA][ITAL]West London is full of as many opportunities for fun as any part of London, with the exception of the West End. One good reason for studying in London is the total overkill on local entertainments - students would have to be pretty unimaginative not to be able to find anything to do. The Bound's Green bar shuts too early (9pm) [ITAL]to be any fun at all[EITAL] and the Enfield bar [ITAL]is ugly and small but popular anyway[EITAL]. [ITAL] Trent Park's bar is the best - it has events with relentless regularity and is always packed - but it is challenged for the title by Tottenham, which, with the expansion on the campus, has hosted all-night raves and other attractions.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Theatres:[EBOLD] The Simmonds Theatre (cap 400) is the larger of 2. Because Middlesex runs a course in the performing arts, there are loads of student productions, 3 of which were performed last year at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.[PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos:[EBOLD] Music and lights hit the ears and eyes of up to 400 students every night at Trent Park SU (adm ú3.50) and 3 times a week in the Hendrix Lounge (300) at Tottenham. The bar at Tottenham is used as a rave venue once a term. Events at other campuses include weekly alternative discos at Enfield bar (ú2.50) and a free indie disco at Hendon Bar (150). Kiss FM (radio station) has run discos at Bound's Green Bar.[PARA][BOLD]Music venues:[EBOLD] Apart from all the above club/disco venues, the SU building at Trent Park (cap 600), Tottenham (700), New Hall (700) and Bound's Green (400, jazz) are all used for bands, [ITAL]although the big names aren't often drawn and the SU is more into tempting DJs.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Others:[EBOLD] Middlesex hosts reputedly the biggest student ball in the country - the Freshers Ball with 5,000 people, ú15 a head, black tie.[PARA][PARA][ITAL][HDNG]EATING OUT:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA]The University runs 6 refectories around the campuses, as opposed to the SU's 3 (at 2 campuses), which stay open till 8pm and[ITAL] where the food is a bit cheaper.[EITAL] There is a huge variety of junk food around all the sites, especially at Tottenham, and all-night cafes and greasy spoons are available near most sites.
