[HDNG]INTRODUCTION:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]S3[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] Recent successes: Women's volleyball, men's basketball.[ESTAT][PARA][ITAL]Quite apart from excellent facilities (not 1, but 2 sports centres), the University's size means that it turns out at least as many sporty champs as other colleges. In fact, in recent years, it's had more than its fair share. But choice abounds giving even the hardiest couch potato the chance to uproot and branch out into a sprouting of sports.[EITAL] There is a charge of just 30p for the sports centre.[HDNG]SPORTS FACILITIES:[EHDNG][PARA]On campus there's the McDougall Centre offering a swimming pool, a sports hall, a small gym, multigym, 4 squash courts, 2 fives courts, rifle range, climbing wall, sauna, solarium and outside basketball/netball court. A small admission is charged. There are also facilities at a variety of other centres. The Wythenshawe Ground is the largest: 60 acres of playing fields (10 acres more, shared with [ULNE]UMIST[EULNE], are within 4 miles of the campus), 6 tennis courts and a pavilion. Firs Athletic Ground at Fallowfield in South Manchester has 31 acres of playing fields, 8 tennis courts, an all-weather pitch and a large pavilion, all near the main student halls of residence. Nearby, the Fallowfield Stadium has amenities for track and field events and a soccer pitch. The Armitage Centre provides a sports hall, a climbing room, sauna and solarium, 2 martial arts dojos, table tennis and a fitness room, all for a small charge. Finally, on the Bridgewater canal in Sale, 18 miles outside town is The Boathouse and Yacht Club.[PARA][ITAL] The city makes up for the University's rare sporting limitations with Paint Ball and Ten Pin Bowling, and the Peak District and Pennines (both only a few miles east out of the city) make up where the city draws the short straw.[EITAL][PARA][PARA][ITAL][HDNG]SPORTING CLUBS:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA]Women's Football; Gym Hockey; Hang Gliding; Hiking; Women's Hockey; Jiu Jitsu; Karate (Shotokan); Women's Lacrosse; Parachuting; Pistol and Rifle; Rowing; Rugby 5s; Rugby League; Speleology (caving); Women's Squash; Ten Pin Bowling; Volleyball; Water Polo; Weightlifting.[HDNG]ATTRACTIONS:[EHDNG][PARA]Manchester United is the world's most supported football club, but, of course, for those who look better in baby blue, there's always Man City. For test and county cricket, there's Old Trafford and golf at the Golf Club. Speedway bikes at Broadhurst Park, Rugby at Swinton, Salford and Trafford Borough, Volleyball at Sale.
