[EITAL] Many have late licences till 1am serving mainly Stones, Whitbread and Higsons. Some, unfortunately, have latched onto the idea that they can charge ú5 or ú6 for entrance, but there are still plenty for just ú1 even on a Saturday night. [ITAL]Most notably, there's 'Casablanca', (ú2) a veritable grotto of classic cuts and techno funk, and a downstairs bar that makes the black hole of Calcutta look deserted, where artists, actors and playwrights gather to eat chips and drink beer in a formerly illegal hang-out. Best of all, in Liverpool - unlike London where the twentysomethings are forever on a quest for the most happening spot - everyone has somewhere to go whatever their musical tastes. Other [EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: 'Pink Parrot' (Gothy/Indie, ú2); 'Club X' (cellar with horrid bogs, Indie/Rock, ú2.50); 'Krazy House' (cheap drink, cool atmos, top l ú3/ú4); Nation (house/garage).[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Music venues:[EBOLD] The [ITAL]premiÅre [EITAL]venues are the Empire (Tom Jones, Lloyd Cole, Bolshoi Ballet), The Royal Court for top bands (Deacon Blue, Teenage Fanclub) and the [ULNE]Liverpool John Moores University[EULNE]'s Haigh Building. [ITAL] It's also worth dropping in on the many other smaller venues and clubs to catch the vibe, such as the Lomax, where the Fall recently snarled. The most notable are: the Lounge Bar (cap 800, gigs, grub and discos); The Mandela Bar (160, dark and sleazy); and the Liver Bar (open all day, serving food and popular).[PARA][BOLD]Theatres:[EBOLD] There are 2 theatres in the University: the Stanley Theatre in the Guild and the University theatre. Most years they manage to muster a production for the Edinburgh Fringe.[PARA][BOLD]Cinemas:[EBOLD] The Guild has a large screen in the Mountford Hall and shows 2 films a week (recently, True Romance, Young Americans, The Fugitive).[PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos/music venues:[EBOLD] The Lounge Bar [ITAL]is the perfect size for a dance dive - not too big to be empty, not so small it's a sweat box.[EITAL] But it's not the only venue - there's the Mandela Bar and Mountford Hall (1,500). 3 to 4 times a week the Guild or one of the student clubs arrange the sound, lights and DJ and the students do the rest. The venue varies and so does the cost (ú2.50-ú3.75). Regulars include 'Time Tunnel' (retro-pop) and 'Wildlife' (hiphop/funk). All venues are also used for live bands, and Mountford Hall is large enough to host the likes of, recently, The Orb, the Manics, and D:Ream.[PARA][BOLD]Cabaret:[EBOLD] The Guild organises occasional cabaret events, usually in the Mountford Hall and usually featuring top japesters such as, recently, Eddie Izzard and Harry Hill.[PARA][BOLD]Others: [EBOLD]All the major academic departments and halls arrange balls at least once a year (adm ú8-25), and the Irish Society stages [ITAL]raucous[EITAL] ceilidhs.[HDNG]EATING OUT:[EHDNG][PARA]There are refectories or cafes in all the big departments, including The Green, an especially large munch shop in Science, and the Eleanor Rathbone in Social Science. The Guild offers the Reilly Bar (for rolls all day till 8pm), the Liver Bar (which doesn't offer offal, but serves pizzas and snacks till 10pm), the Dining Room (for lunch) and the Lounge Bar (for snacks when the sun's up). Within the University precinct, there's the Cambridge pub on Abercromby Square which serves a bite or two. Or, not too far from the University, there's a popular sandwich shop and Myrtle Parade, a row of shops, including a number of restaurants and cafes.
