[HDNG]HULL UNIVERSITY UNION:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]P4[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] 6 sabbaticals [BULL] Turnout at last ballot: 14.6% [BULL] NUS member [ESTAT][PARA][ITAL]In a survey at the time of the last general election, 30% of students said they would vote Conservative, the same number as would vote Labour. The rest opted for Lib Dems, Greens, don't knows and don't cares. This, however surprised most people because the Union is dominated by moderate left wingers and independents and has the largest student Labour Club in the country. The answer is that many of the Tory voters feel that the so long as the Union doesn't bother them, they won't bother it. The Union's main role is commercial - the building is big and the facilities impressive.[EITAL][PARA][PARA][ITAL][HDNG]SU FACILITIES:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA]Union facilities are based in University House: 3 bars (and 1 at the sports centre); mini-mart shop (and mini-mart with limited opening hours at the Lawns Centre - see below); gift shop; travel agency; print unit; launderette; photocopying; DTP unit; Lloyds cashpoint; games machines room; vending machines; pool tables; function rooms (including 4 large halls); minibus hire. The sports centre is 1 of only 2 Union-run centres in the country.[HDNG]CLUBS (NON SPORTING):[EHDNG][PARA]Amnesty International; Anti-Fascist; Asian; Audio; Ballroom; Beatles; Chinese; Circus; Debating; Erasmus; Gilbert and Sullivan; Grotsoc (grunge); Hellenic; House Music; Hunt Sabs; International Students; Jazz; Jewish; Links First Aid; Machiavelli; Malaysian; Model UN; Motorcycle; Nordic; NSPCC; Punk/Hardcore; Rave; Real Ale; Science Fiction; Scottish; Singapore; SE Asian; Turf Club; Wargames; War on Want; Welsh.[HDNG]OTHER ORGANISATIONS:[EHDNG][PARA]The Union-financed, but editorially independent 'Hullfire' is the main student newspaper. Other student media includes 'Torch' (literary/arts magazine) and the student radio station, which broadcasts to the Lawns centre and the Wheatsheaf. The charity Rag raised ú15,000 last year and HUSSO, the country's largest student community group, runs [ITAL]some extremely active and worthwhile[EITAL] projects. It employs a sabbatical co-ordinator, a full-time secretary and involves over 1,000 students.[HDNG]RELIGIOUS:[EHDNG][PARA][STAT][BULL] 10 chaplains (CofE, RC, Orthodox, Methodist, Baptist, URC, Friends, Jewish)[ESTAT][PARA]There's a chapel sort of thing under the arts building. In Hull, most versions of Christianity are represented and there is a small Jewish community, but the city is far from multi-cultural and other religions don't get much of a look-in.[HDNG]PAID WORK:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]Hull has got a pretty bad unemployment problem, and students aren't first in the queue, facing resentment if they try to push in.[EITAL][PARA][PARA]
