[PARA]Perhaps it's the sound of the word - a sort of cross between [PARA]'hulk' and 'dull'.[EITAL] Hull's full name is Kingston-Upon-Hull, [ITAL]which [PARA]doesn't share the monosyllabic thud that echoes the image of[EITAL] [PARA]Britain's 3rd largest port, a [ITAL]sprawling [EITAL]town (but not sprawling very[PARA]far) on England's north-east coast, surrounded by miles of flat, [PARA]flat land. The River Hull flows down from the north to join the [PARA]huge estuary of the Humber. [ITAL] Perhaps we're being unfair to Hull[EITAL],[ITAL] [PARA]the surrounding coastline is stunning[EITAL] and the Victorian city centre[PARA]also [ITAL]quite attractive[EITAL], even if the outskirts and harbours are heavily[PARA]industrialised. The University is 2 miles from the centre in a [ITAL][PARA]pleasantly leafy[EITAL] Victorian/Edwardian residential area. The large [PARA]campus (94 acres) is a collection of municipal architecture from [PARA]the last 100 years, but principally from the 30s and 60s. Those [PARA]60s bits in [ITAL]dull [EITAL]brick [ITAL]damage[EITAL] the overall picture, which would [PARA]otherwise be a [ITAL]good-looking, [EITAL]low-lying campus with broad [PARA]spreads of paths, paving and even grass and trees.[HDNG]ATMOSPHERE:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]Hull University is the most typical example of a civic campus [PARA]university. In other words, it's one of the only ones that actually [PARA]fits the stereotype. In fact, the very fact that it is typical makes it [PARA]unique. Got that? No? Well, let us explain what a civic university[PARA]is likely to be like and then you can take it as read that it applies to[PARA]Hull. A self-contained campus is bound to develop a friendly [PARA]community atmosphere, but, being in a city, won't be stifling, [PARA]because there's escape into the welcoming anonymity of the [PARA]centre (most students don't bother escaping). Philip Larkin, who [PARA]used to be librarian, said that 'people are slow to come here, but [PARA]even slower to leave'. Friction has been known with the locals, [PARA]however, and black and Asian students have been known to face[PARA]a bit of, although things are improving.[EITAL][PARA][PARA][ITAL][HDNG]TOWN:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA][ITAL][STAT][BULL] Population: 242,000 [BULL] London: 165miles [BULL] York: 34miles [PARA]Leeds: 50miles[ESTAT][EITAL][PARA]Back in the 19th century, fish were responsible for the growth of [PARA]Hull - the fishing industry rather than a school of particularly [PARA]enterprising haddock. This century, trade has shifted to [PARA]industries, particularly chemical ones. [ITAL]In a weird twist of the old [PARA]adage, Hull is an okay place to live, but I wouldn't want to visit [PARA]there. It hasn't got much to attract tourists,[EITAL] but has all the [PARA]paraphernalia that attend daily existence: shops, banks, [PARA]bookshops, VD clinics and so on. The most amazing local sights[PARA]include the docks and marina, the Hull Fair, several art galleries, [PARA]the Humber Suspension Bridge (the largest central span in the [PARA]world) and the cream-coloured telephone boxes. Hull is the only [PARA]town in Britain to have its own telephone system.[HDNG]TRAVEL:[EHDNG][PARA][BOLD]Trains:[EBOLD] Hull Paragon BR Station runs direct services to London [PARA](2:50hrs, 2/day) and other connections to Birmingham, Bristol [PARA]and Edinburgh.[PARA][BOLD]Coaches:[EBOLD] Clipper and National Express services all over the [PARA]country including London (ú23.00, 4.45hrs, 4/day), Leeds (ú5.00, [PARA]1:45hrs, 2/day), and Newcastle (ú13.00, 3:35hrs, 1/day).[PARA][BOLD]Car:[EBOLD] From the south the M18 connects the M1 with the local Hull [PARA]motorway, the M62. From the north, the M1 then M62 which [PARA]leads into the A63 - then look out for the A1079.[PARA][BOLD]Air:[EBOLD] Humberside Airport, 12 miles south across the Humber. is [PARA]mainly for inland flights, although has some to Europe.[PARA][BOLD]Ferries:[EBOLD] To Holland and Scandinavia.[PARA][BOLD]Hitching:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Prospects okay, having reached the main routes out of [PARA]Humberside, but getting that far can present a problem.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Local:[EBOLD] There's a [ITAL]fiercely competitive[EITAL] number of bus companies [PARA]running until midnight-ish. Fares from 30p to 60p. There are 3 [PARA]train stops in Hull, 2 of which are useful for students, since 1 is in [PARA]the city centre and the other is in Cottingham.[PARA][BOLD]Taxis:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Sharing taxis is often cheaper than catching a bus or train.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Bicycles:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Hull is very flat with straight wide roads between the [PARA]residential and functional parts of the University.
