[HDNG]HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY STUDENTS' ASSOCIATION:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]P5[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] 3 sabbatical [BULL] Turnout at last ballot: 17% [BULL] Ave. turnout at General Meetings: 2% [BULL] NUS member [ESTAT][PARA][ITAL]Politics is generally a bigger turn off for Heriot-Watt students than Mel Smith's Y-fronts, but in the last few years, they have had 2 ballots about NUS membership. First they cancelled their membership (student unions are members, not individual students), then after a only few months they decided they wanted it back again. The driving force behind the disaffiliation wasn't a right wing faction (as it is in some English colleges), but a general feeling that the NUS services weren't worth the membership fee. The NUS services must have improved rapidly. Students regard their Student Association first and foremost as a services organisation.[EITAL][PARA][PARA][ITAL][HDNG]SU FACILITIES:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA]The Student Association's building is called the Student Union (so that's 'the Association' that's the organisation and 'the Union' that's the building, got that? Right.): 3 bars; disco; cafeteria; shop; travel agency; minibus hire; welfare library; meeting rooms.[HDNG]CLUBS (NON SPORTING):[EHDNG][PARA]Aberdeen FC Supporters; Amiga Watt; Brewing (biggest beer fest in Scotland); Asian Cooking; Creature Feature; Games; German Theatre; Greek Students; Homebrew; Hong Kong Students; Malaysian and Singaporean; Orkney; Pakistan Students; Riscy Business (Acorn users) ; Science Fiction and Fantasy; Skirmish; SNP; Watt Wheelers; Wild.[HDNG]OTHER ORGANISATIONS:[EHDNG][PARA]The fortnightly student newspaper is called 'Watt's On' and a student radio station is in its embryonic stages. Various good works are done by CAG (the Community Action Group) and the charity Rag raises dosh for good causes - ú4,000 last year.[HDNG]RELIGIOUS:[EHDNG][PARA][STAT][BULL] 6 chaplains[ESTAT][PARA]Multi-faith chaplaincy centre (with 6 honorary chaplains of various denominations) and a Muslim prayer room.
