There are a few which specialise in arty flicks, including the Glasgow Film Theatre.[PARA][BOLD]Theatres:[EBOLD] Glasgow hosts Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet, the Scottish National Orchestra and Chorus and the Scottish Exhibition Centre. [ITAL]Not bad, eh? Well, as we already said, Glasgow's Miles Better (than a slap in the face with a wet fish).[EITAL] And, of course, there are standard theatrics too, notably at the Theatre Royal (with visits from the RSC and the National Theatre), the Citizen's Theatre for rep, the Tramway for experimental drama and the King's Theatre for [ITAL]quality [EITAL]touring and amateur companies. Every May, there's the Mayfest, which, although a lot smaller (and more radical) than the Edinburgh Festival, has the advantage of being during term. There is Streetbiz street theatre every August.[PARA][BOLD]Pubs:[EBOLD][ITAL] Some of the city's best beer bars are more fun than a naked frolic in mud. [EITAL] [PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs (among many others): Victoria Bar, Bridgegate (trendy, arty); Brahms and Liszt; Brunswick Cellars; Busby's; Horseshoe (friendly, unpretentious); Bon Accord (real ales). Don't try your luck in the East End if you're English, or the Red Lion unless you want to join the BNP.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos:[EBOLD] [ITAL]Glasgow's clubs may not be cheap but they're rocking.[EITAL] Many have student nights. [PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: The Tunnel (trendy, ú5); Cotton Club (ú2 for students); Fury Murrays (studenty, ú3). Bennetts (ú4) and the cruisy Club X (ú3) are the main gay haunts.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Music venues:[EBOLD] Many local bands have made it big, often starting out at some of the many [ITAL]vibe-ridden[EITAL] venues. [ITAL] The atmosphere is very different in each: at GUU, students lounge in leather chairs; at QM, they'll squat on anything available. QM also has an offie.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Theatres:[EBOLD] The University's theatre hosts regular productions. Last year, students took 3 shows to the Edinburgh Fringe.[PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos/music venues:[EBOLD] Both QM and GUU have regular club nights, [ITAL]but GUU wins it [EITAL]with the refurbished and [ITAL]21st century [EITAL]The Hive (cap 1,000) narrowly beating QM's Common Room (1,200), although QM has recently been forcing its way onto the big gig circuit. Both do their stuff 3 times a week. Both club venues also host live bands.[PARA][BOLD]Recent band appearances:[EBOLD] GUU: Credit to the Nation, Jools Holland, Utah Saints. QM: The Fall, The Cranberries, Manics, Therapy?[PARA][BOLD]Others:[EBOLD] The highlight of the entertainments year is 'Daft Friday', the last day of the 1st term, when GUU hold a posh ball for its members only. (The Stone of Scone scheme was reputedly hatched on Daft Friday). In retaliation, QM started the 'Dafter Friday Ball' which is much less formal and geared around bands and discos. Both unions have other occasional events like the unavoidable karaoke, cabaret and so on.[HDNG]EATING OUT:[EHDNG][PARA]The University refectory injects a bit of high grade tummy fuel including sit-down meals and snacks from 8.30am till midnight. GUU has 3 outlets (8am to 6.30pm) and, in the red corner, QM has 2 (times vary). If students still fancy a bite, there's many a local cafe, snack bar and pub. [ITAL]As for eating out, Glasgow has plenty of restaurants, but Keith Floyd would be unimpressed by the ones that students can afford. For those with sweet teeth, and a sugar-daddy to match, Cafe Rogano does the best chocolate mousse ever. The West End is packed with everything from pizzas to potatoes to pakoras to puppyburgers, into the wee small hours.[EITAL]
