[EITAL] In fact, Anglia Poly University's 2 [PARA]main campuses were separate colleges; Cambridge College of [PARA]Art and Technology (CCAT) and the Essex Institute of Higher [PARA]Education in Chelmsford; until they merged in 1989, became a [PARA]poly in 1991 and a university in May 1992 - all in the time it takes to [PARA]get a degree. [ITAL]'Merged' that is in the loosest sense, because [PARA]they're still geographically and socially quite distinct. [EITAL]The courses[PARA]taught at each site are different, but to confuse matters, there are[PARA]another 2 smaller sites to cite at Brentwood and Danbury.[HDNG]ATMOSPHERE and SITES:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]What have Anglia students and ravers got in common? A lot of [PARA]'E's. A cruel joke and a reference to the fact that the University is[PARA]not often students' 1st choice - few regret the tricky hand of fate, [PARA]though. The spirit at each site varies as much as the place [PARA]names on the train tickets and there's no common overtone.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Chelmsford: [EBOLD](4,321 students - business; law; building studies; [PARA]technology; nursing; social work; computing) The administrative [PARA]centre of the University is housed on this site, composed of 4 [PARA]buildings ([ITAL]very squat, very 60s, very ugly, shabby and drab inside[PARA]and out[EITAL]) around a [ITAL]token [EITAL]patch of grass and [ITAL]set in the main town [PARA]of Essex - the capital of the Essex girl and Essex lad - [EITAL]which has[PARA]been called 'the dullest town in Britain' [ITAL]built with depressingly [PARA]great concern for practicality.[EITAL] [ITAL]The town might be a docile dump, [PARA]but the students are real live wires simply sparking with spirit and [PARA]the entertainments are livelier than on other sites. This is [PARA]definitely the site for party people and sporty sorts, but not [PARA]political vultures or those who mind others knowing their [PARA]business. The place feels a bit like a school, [EITAL]not surprising since [PARA]that's what it once was[ITAL]. [EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Brentwood: [EBOLD](1,046 - health; education) Brentwood, [ITAL]which is a less [PARA]offensively Essexy town than Chelmsford,[EITAL] is 11 miles south-east [PARA]in the direction of London. [ITAL]It is a distinctly dormant dormitory [PARA]town to which students should come if they want a quiet life. [PARA]These are predominantly female mature students, living peaceful [PARA]local lives often with husbands (or wives) and children.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Danbury:[EBOLD] (614 - management) 4 miles east of the Chelmsford, [PARA]this is [ITAL]simply a money-making[EITAL] conference centre with a few [PARA]postgrads on management courses.[HDNG]CHELMSFORD:[EHDNG][PARA][STAT][BULL] Population: 92,479 [BULL] London: 37miles[ESTAT][PARA][ITAL]The best excuses for Chelmsford are that: [EITAL](1) it's been here since[PARA]the Romans (although TV's 'Chelmsford 123' is not a reliable [PARA]historical account); and (2) a large proportion of the population [PARA]leaves every morning to work in London and doesn't come back [PARA]till the evening. [ITAL] Looking for redeeming features we have to resort[PARA]to mentioning the spanking new University campus, [EITAL]the selection [PARA]of mass franchise shops, Essex County Cricket ground and a [PARA]very low crime rate. [ITAL]Students should in particular beware of the [PARA]lack of bookshops and late night shopping.[EITAL][HDNG]TRAVEL: CHELMSFORD:[EHDNG][PARA][BOLD]Trains:[EBOLD] The Brentwood site is 15 minutes walk from Shenfield [PARA]station which is on the same line that goes to Chelmsford Station [PARA](2 minutes from the campus). From Chelmsford there are direct [PARA]trains into London Liverpool Street (ú4.05, 33mins, 4/hr) and it is [PARA]easy enough to change to services to Birmingham (ú15.85), [PARA]Bristol (ú20.45), Edinburgh (ú41.60) and all over the country.[PARA][BOLD]Coaches:[EBOLD] Chelmsford by Greenline buses and National Express [PARA]services, which, among other places go to London (ú4, 1:25hrs, [PARA]4/day), Cambridge (ú6.75, 1:25hrs, 1/day), Manchester (ú20, [PARA]6:30hrs, 3/day) and Birmingham (ú13.50, 5:05hrs, 3/day).[PARA][BOLD]Car:[EBOLD] Chelmsford and Brentwood are on the A12 out of London.
