IMicrosoft LAN Manager Setup - Installation@
IMicrosoft LAN Manager Setup
Setup configures your computer for use with LAN Manager,
Windows NT, and Windows for Workgroups networks. Before you
begin LAN Manager installation, determine the following:
* The network adapter installed in the computer
* The settings used on that adapter (for example, the
interrupt and the memory address)
* The name of the network protocol(s) to be used on
the computer (for example, NetBEUI)
For more information see the installation guide for your
client software.
IUsing the Keyboard in Setup
You can use both the mouse and the keyboard in
Setup. When using the keyboard:
* Use ENTER to invoke the selected command button.
(<OK> is usually the default selection.)
* Use ESC to return without change to the previous
dialog box or condition. This is equivalent to
choosing the <Cancel> button.
* Use TAB to move to the next field in a dialog
box. Use SHIFT+TAB to move to the previous field.
For more detailed information choose <Help>, press
F1, or see the installation guide for your client
software.

IWorkstation Configuration
-------------------------------------------------------
(Click scroll bar or press Page Down to see more text.)
A configuration consists of a network adapter card
driver and (unless the driver is monolithic) one or
more protocols bound to it. (A monolithic network
adapter card driver serves as a network adapter card
driver and protocol driver combined.)
This dialog box shows the installed network adapter
card drivers and any protocol(s) bound to each driver.
You can accept or alter the displayed configurations.
You make a selection by clicking, or by pressing the UP
or DOWN arrow keys. Selecting a driver or any of its
protocols is the same as selecting the configuration.
Refer to the Microsoft LAN Manager Installation and
Configuration Guide for more information on network
adapter card drivers and protocols.
If this computer has no network adapter cards, but
you intend to use the Microsoft LAN Manager Remote
Access Server product, select NONE from the list of
network adapter cards.
<OK> accepts the displayed configuration and then
either proceeds with installation or (if LAN Manager is
already installed and this is a reconfiguration) exits
to the Setup screen. In either case however, if the
TCP/IP protocol is a member of a displayed
configuration, you are first taken to the TCP/IP
Settings dialog box.
<Add/Remove Protocols> takes you to the Network
Protocols dialog box, where you can change the
protocols for the selected configuration.
<Add New Config> takes you to the Network Adapter
Drivers dialog box, where you can initiate a new
configuration by selecting a network adapter card
driver.
I<Remove Config> removes the selected configuration
(meaning a network adapter card driver and any
protocols bound to it).
<Cancel> cancels any changes and returns to the Setup
screen. This command button appears only during
reconfiguration from the Setup screen (but not during
installation).
<Exit Setup> cancels installation, removes any
installed files and directories, and returns the hard
disk to its preinstallation condition. This command
button appears only during installation (but not during
reconfiguration from the Setup screen).
INo Network Drivers Selected
-------------------------------------------------------
(Click scroll bar or press Page Down to see more text.)
The Workstation Configuration dialog box does not
contain a network driver configuration (meaning a
network adapter card driver and, if the driver is not
monolithic, one or more protocols). This server or
workstation cannot participate in your network until a
network driver is selected. You may wish to omit the
NET START WORKSTATION or NET START SERVER command from
your AUTOEXEC.BAT or STARTUP.CMD file until a network
driver has been installed, to avoid error messages when
booting this computer.
There are two reasons you may want to proceed without
selecting network drivers at this time: you may be
planning to later install the Remote Access Service,
or you may be planning to later run Setup (from the
hard disk, not from the set of installation disks)
again, and select network drivers at that time.
<OK> accepts the workstation configuration without
network drivers being selected, and proceeds with the
installation or (if LAN Manager is already installed
and this is a reconfiguration) exits to the Setup
screen.
<Cancel> returns to the previous dialog box, where
you can select a network driver.
INetwork Protocols for
(Selected Network Adapter Card Driver)
-------------------------------------------------------
(Click scroll bar or press Page Down to see more text.)
You must select one or more protocols to bind to
the selected network adapter card driver.
A protocol is selected by clicking, or by pressing the
UP or DOWN arrow key until it is highlighted, then
pressing the space bar so that an "X" appears in the
brackets to the left of the protocol.
If an appropriate protocol is not listed, and if you
have a disk containing an appropriate protocol, you can
add it to the installation by selecting <Other
Protocol> and following the on-screen instructions.
For information on protocols see the Microsoft LAN
Manager Installation and Configuration Guide.
<OK> binds the selected protocol(s) to the previously
selected network adapter card driver and takes you to
the Workstation Configuration dialog box, where the new
configuration is displayed.
<Other Protocol> prompts you to provide a disk that
contains additional protocols; or to provide the path
to those protocols.
<Cancel> returns without change to the previous dialog
<Exit Setup> cancels installation, removes any
installed files and directories, and returns the hard
disk to its preinstallation condition. This command
button appears only during installation (but not during
reconfiguration from the Setup screen).
ITCP/IP Settings
-------------------------------------------------------
(Click scroll bar or press Page Down to see more text.)
You are asked to provide seven TCP/IP parameters:
* IP ADDRESS is the internet protocol address, a number
identifying this computer to other computers on the
network. It must be unique, and is composed of four
fields separated by periods, in the form:
w.x.y.z
Each field (w, x, y, and z) represents a range of
possible numbers from 0 to 255. The IP address
must have an entry unless Enable Automatic DHCP
Configuration is selected.
* SUBNET MASK is a series of bits used to identify the
subnet number portion of an IP address. It is four
fields separated by periods, in the form:
w.x.y.z
Each field (w, x, y, and z) represents a range of
possible numbers from 0 to 255.
If your network uses subnets you must use the
correct subnet mask. (This reduces unnecessary
network traffic.) Obtain the subnet mask from your
network administrator.
If your network does not use subnets, then you must
use one of these values:
For class A addresses: 255.0.0.0
For class B addresses: 255.255.0.0
For class C addresses: 255.255.255.0
I* DEFAULT GATEWAY (ROUTER) is the IP address of the
default router. A router is a hardware device that
connects networks together to create an internetwork.
This address is composed of four fields separated
by periods, in the form:
w.x.y.z
Each field (w, x, y, and z) represents a range of
possible numbers from 0 to 255. This address is
optional and may be left blank.
* NUMBER OF NETBIOS SESSIONS. For servers, peer
workstations, and MS OS/2 workstations the range is
1-254 and the default is 40. For MS-DOS
workstations the range is 1-22 and the default is 6.
This parameter is required and must have an entry.
* ENABLE AUTOMATIC DHCP CONFIGURATION. When
selected, the workstation automatically configures
its IP Address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway
parameters using the Dynamic Host Configuration
Protocol.
* WINS PRIMARY SERVER. The IP Address of the primary
Windows Internet Name Service server you want to
override the default DHCP selection.
I* WINS BACKUP SERVER. The IP Address of the backup
Windows Internet Name Service server you want to
override the default DHCP selection.
For more detailed information refer to the Microsoft
LAN Manager Installation and Configuration Guide.
<OK> accepts your entries. If this is an installation,
you proceed to the next dialog box. If this a
reconfiguration, you return to the Setup screen.
<Cancel> returns without change to the previous dialog
IDNR and Sockets Settings
-------------------------------------------------------
(Click scroll bar or press Page Down to see more text.)
* Username: the username your system will provide to a
host for authentication. The default entry is your
LAN Manager username.
* Hostname: the host name your workstation will report to
the host when using the remote services. The default
entry is your LAN Manager computername.
Enter the Domain Name Resolver (DNR) Parameters only
if your TCP/IP network has a domain name service (DNS)
server. See your network administrator if you don't
know if you have a DNS or if you don't know its IP
address.
If your network has a DNS and you choose to configure
the DNR parameters, the DNR module will be loaded with
your sockets and Telnet applications to resolve hostname
to IP address mappings. This allows you to specify remote
hosts by hostname without knowing specific IP addresses.
* Use DNS for hostname resolution: Check this option to
invoke DNR from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
* Primary nameserver: The IP address of the first DNS
that you want the DNR to consult when attempting to
resolve hostname to IP address mappings.
* Secondary nameserver: the IP address of the DNS you
want the DNR to consult if the Primary nameserver
fails.
* Domain name suffix: this suffix is automatically
appended to any hostname for DNS processing. For
example, if the domain name suffix is:
microsoft.com
a request to the DNS with the rsh command:
rsh lm22svr -l maria cat /etc/motd
will be received by the DNS as:
lm22svr.microsoft.com
Ask your network administrator what you should choose
as a domain name suffix. This value is usually different
than the LAN Manager domain.
* Enable Windows sockets: Check this option to invoke
SOCKETS from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
* Number of Sockets: This parameter specifies the
maximum number of sockets that can be made available
to applications at one time. The maximum value for
this parameter is 22; the minimum is 1.
Note: applications may use more than one socket to
provide a service. Consider this when trying to
maximize available memory.
Note: The total number of sockets and NetBIOS sessions
combined may not exceed 22.
<OK> accepts your entries.
<Cancel> returns without change to the previous dialog
INetwork Adapter Drivers
-------------------------------------------------------
(Click scroll bar or press Page Down to see more text.)
Select a network adapter card driver that supports the
network adapter card installed in this computer. A
driver is selected by clicking; or by pressing the UP
or DOWN arrow key until it is highlighted.
If an appropriate driver is not listed, and if you have
a disk containing an appropriate driver, you can add it
to the installation by selecting <Other Driver> and
following the on-screen instructions. Contact the
manufacturer of your network adapter card if you do not
have a needed network adapter card driver.
You can select only one driver at a time. If this is
a LAN Manager Enhanced workstation and if you need to
install multiple drivers to support multiple network
adapter cards, you will later have the opportunity to
return to this dialog box and select another driver.
During installation (but not during reconfiguration
from the Setup screen) you can select NO DRIVER in
order to complete installation without specifying a
driver. However, this computer will not be able to
participate in the network until a valid network
adapter card driver is selected.
For information on drivers refer to the Microsoft LAN
Manager Installation and Configuration Guide.
<OK> accepts the selected driver and proceeds to the
next dialog box.
<Other Driver> prompts you to provide a disk containing
additional network adapter card drivers; or to provide
the path to those drivers.
<Cancel> cancels any selection made here and takes
you to the Workstation Configuration dialog box.
<Exit Setup> cancels installation, removes any
installed files and directories, and returns the hard
disk to its preinstallation condition. This command
