1.  Here is a bin-hexed, self-extracting group of pict files that we created
from a large poster of NFL Teams, divided-up by Division.

2.  I remember seeing a request for NFL logos and such a couple weeks back, so
that gave me the idea to submit this for those interested.

3.  We have a rather large pict/sound/icon library in my office, with a total
of about a GB of "fun" and some serious stuff.  Most of it is military (picts),
but a lot is standard clip-art, system sounds, and system 7 icons (about 1200).

4.  I hope you enjoy this group of files, and if you are interested in any of

Otello is a strategy board game named after an opera.  It is not named after a
certain commercial strategy board game, although there is a vague resemblance
between the two.  :-)

Otello can play at three skill levels, or it can be used by two people as an
electronic game board.  If you like, it can suggest what it thinks is the best
move available at any time.

"ButtonPad is an improved version of the NotePad desk accessory that comes
with the Macintosh.   ButtonPad lets you categorize your notes into up to
eight separate "Quick Access" pads that can be quickly accessed via push
buttons.  Each pad can be up to 32K in size.  This makes ButtonPad ideal
for storage of text that is frequently accessed such as telephone numbers,
customer information, etc.  The quick access push buttons augment the
normal open, select, close dialog procedures.  You may assign your own
labels to each push button and the name of the pad file to be retrieved.
The pads are automatically saved if modified.  In addition to the quick
access pads, you may also access any text file via the normal open command.
 There is a find command to access specific information, a variable line
sort command, and tools for cleaning up text files such as replacing spaces
with tabs.  ButtonPad will also dial the phone via tones or modem for phone
numbers found in the current line.  You can print out your pads, adjusted
to fit pocket organizers.  ButtonPad is a cross between standard notepad,
minieditor, and telephone dialer/index card type applications."

This Compact Pro archive contains the source code for CAnimCursor,
a public domain Think C 5 class that provides easy, flexible handling
of animated cursors.  The Think Class Library is not required.  This
is the fourth beta.  (It's quite stable and hasn't crashed in months,
but I'm still calling it beta because of a minor anomaly which I
haven't resolved yet.)

CAnimCursor uses an 'acur' resource to determine which cursors to
display;  the animation speed and a few other variables are changed
by method calls.  Both color and B&W are supported.  The interface
can be as simple as initializing the object with the resource ID of
your 'acur', and calling startAnimating() and stopAnimating() at the
appropriate times.

CAnimCursor's best feature is that it is very good about doing the
Right Thing (tm).  For example, if your 'acur' points to color
cursors and the Mac is B&W, it will pull the B&W bitmaps out of the
'crsr's.  If you call startAnimating() twice, the second call will
have no effect.  And so on.

CAnimCursor will not call SetCCursor at interrupt time, since that
trap relies on the heap being good, and will fail if the interrupt
occurs during a memory manager reorganization.  This does not happen
often, but one crash is one too many.

Also included are CQixableCursor, a subclass which optionally draws a
little 'Qix' over your cursors;  subclasses of three TCL core classes
which will prevent the cursor from being reset each time through the
event loop;  a short sample subclass;  and four sample cursors,
including a smooth beachball and a color spinning earth.  (I stole
the earth from Stefan Bilaniuk's free extension "Earth," also at
sumex-aim.  I feel no guilt because I guess he stole it from someone
else ;-), and because I colorized all 26 frames by hand, phew!)

Extensive (indeed, ponderous) comments explain proper usage, and there
are even one or two comments in the code itself.  Plus, it comes with
a toll-free technical support number, which I figure is a pretty good
deal for something in the public domain, eh?

Subject: New version of Colorizing HC XCMD (v1.1)

This is a new version of the Colorizing HC XCMD stack. The stack it
replaces (v1.0) was a set of support scripts for the colorizeHC XCMD, which
is included. This version goes further: it is a general tool for creating
the sort of stacks where you wish to perform some function everytime the
stack becomes visible - changing some graphics, showing some windows,
changing the position and visibility of buttons and fields, etc. There are
many more facilaties, and is worth looking at, even if you don't intend to
colour your stacks. Unlike previously, a version of the original Colorizing
Hypercard stack (from BungDabba) is included - although modified to use the
XCMD stack - which serves as the major reference to the XCMD itself. Some
monochrome support is provided, in terms of using picture windows, and all
the main stacks supplied are readable in black and white - don't expect to
see the demos working though.

I hope you find it useful. Apart from referencing, this is all supplied
without strings on its use. Note that you need Hypercard 2.0v2 or later for
the XCMD to work - it is shipped as a Hypercard 2.0 stack.

Here's a pretty cool contribution for the archives.  I have no
connection with the program, authors, or publisher.  But when I ran
across the program, it seemed like just the sort of great thing that
ought to be in the archives!  The accompanying notice (and a bit of
the about box) sez:

        Canary is an impressive HyperCard music editing, composing,
        learning, playing, sequencing system.  It's got XCMDs galore,
        it's got a graphical editor, it's even got MIDI capabilities.
        Take a look; you might enjoy it.  And since Canary is
        shareware, feel free to pass it on to all your friends!

        Canary was designed to make HyperCard song creation as
        efficient as creating songs using professional sequencing
        software.

This simple application displays the following information in a tiny,
relocatable window on Mac's equipped with the Power Manager (Portable,
PowerBooks, Duo's, etc.):

        * digital battery voltage
        * CPU speed
        * AC adapter plugged or not plugged
        * Charging state (hi charge or trickle)
        * 2 timers which are automatically started or halted by detecting the
          insertion or extraction of the AC adpater plug:
              - actual power-on-time since last charge (ie. how long
                your Mac has been in a non-sleep or non-shutdown mode.)
              - elapsed real-time since last charge

Edison does not tell you how long you have left till your battery goes dead,
nor does it show the percentage of battery life remaining. I use
Apple's Battery DA to help me judge these things.

Edison is freeware. It requires System 7.0, and the Power Manager to run.

This version fixes a few bugs that were present in the previous released
version (1.0b) related to disappearing display windows, and a sometimes
inaccurate battery timer. It also reduces the preferred application
partition size from 384K to 80K. Commands have been added to reset and
pause the battery timer, and to center the display window.

The following file replaces /info-mac/util/edison10.hqx in your archives.
It's a binhexed Compact Pro self-extracting archive.

Here is Empire Master 2.5.2 (demo).  Empire Master is a
sophisticated strategy wargame to play against another person
or the computer.

Many game parameters can be customized allowing many
very different variations to be played.  A separate rule editor
(not included with the demo)  allows completely new rule sets
to be created.  Medieval, modern and futuristic scenarios
have been created for Empire Master.

In the demo version some of the game parameters are fixed,
and you cannot save/restore a game in progress.  You can
play complete games with the demo, there is no turn limit
or time limit and the demo will not expire.  The unrestricted
version is moderately priced (print the order form from the
demo itself) and comes with the rule editor, printed documentation
and a library of rule sets.

Open-wide is a control panel extension (INIT/cdev) that widens directory
dialogs (Open... and Save... dialogs), the better to see long file names. It
can also stretch these dialogs vertically, so you can see more file names.

Since 3.0: fixed a bug that sometimes made the control panel crash.

System 6.0.4 or later is required; compatible with System 7.

List Font is a control panel that allows you to change the font and size
used in directory dialog file lists, and display the real icons of files in
such lists.  It requires System 7.  If you use it together with my Open-wide
program (version 3.3 or later for best results), you will be able to use
larger fonts without cramping the list.

I call List Font a hack because it uses undocumented system information, and
may break the next time Apple releases a new System.

MacAmortize is an amortization program for the Macintosh
computer.  It creates payment schedules accoring to data you enter.
Schedules can be printed from MacAmortize and can also be saved to
disk as normal text files which can be opened and edited with any
word processor.

MacAmortize needs to know three of the following four values to
create a payment schedule:  Number of payments, Amount of each
payment, Amount of loan, and Interest rate.  One of these values can
be left empty, and MacAmortize will automatically calculate it for
you.

You may change the inputs as often as you like and display multiple
payment schedules.  Previous schedules are not erased so that you
may compare them to one another.

Special Features:

    Tax Credits:  Tax-deductible interest can be taken into account.

    Inflation:  You can enter the yearly inflation rate.  This causes all
values in the payment schedule to be displayed in CURRENT YEAR
dollars.  You can see how your payments will (effectively) decrease
as time goes on and as inflation causes each dollar to be worth less.

This stack is designed to read in the flat file version of
the Barr Digital Laser Disc Catalog that is available via anonymous
ftp from cs.yale.edu (128.36.0.3  and  130.132.1.2) and convert it
into a stack.  The file is in the /pub/rec.video/BarrLDDB directory
and is named "lib.dat".  The database contains records for ALL currently
available NTSC laser discs and includes information on letterboxing,
digital stereo, close captioning, availability, etc.

will NOT require a co-ordinated change with CMaster, ie, 1.0.9 will work with
future THINK C releases unmodified.

Online.  I noticed that it wasn't on Sumex, so, here ya go... :)

Hellcats Rescue is an application which will resurrect dead 'Hellcats Over the
Pacific' pilots. POWs, MIAs, and discharged pilots, too...  Hellcats Rescue is
useless to anyone who does not have Hellcats Over the Pacific.

This post contains the Hellcats Rescue application, and documentation; they are
stuffed and binhexed.

Please note that I am *not* the author of either of these programs!

Excalibur is a Macintosh spelling checker for LaTeX documents. It also
does a fairly good job with plain TeX files.  It reads files of type
TEXT and it is smart enough to ignore most LaTeX commands and a fair
number of plain TeX commands. Since it just ignores these commands, it
will also serve quite nicely as a spelling checker for any TEXT file
that doesn't contain any LaTeX or TeX commands. (It is not completely
accurate to say that Excalibur ignores LaTeX commands. It will process
any arguments that contain text).

Excalibur is a stand-alone application that we have tested with both
OzTeX and Textures documents. The fact that it is a stand-alone
application should not present any inconvenience since it works with
MultiFinder under System 6 and it is System 7 aware.

You will need System 6.0.4 or higher to run Excalibur.

There is extensive on-line help.  You will find it under the Apple
menu if you are running System 6, and under the Balloon Help menu if
you are running System 7 or greater.

Excalibur is free.

Some new features of Excalibur 1.2 include:

* It saves your preferences between invocations.

* You can convert dictionaries to text files so that you may edit them.

* You can convert text files to dictionaries.

* Excalibur recognizes Apple's extended character set.  This should
help non-English speaking users.

* Support for AMS-LaTeX

* Support for drag and drop operations

* LaTeX manual.

* Many other changes.  See Excalibur Genealogy in the help facility or

If you have an old version of Excalibur, be sure to replace the

Enclosed is version 3.5 of PLANET which supersed Planet 3.4.
PLANET is an application in which your Macintosh computes the coordinates of the planets visible to the naked eye , the sun, and the moon.
When a solar or lunar eclipse is possible you can also investigate the eclipse from any place on earth.
Version 3.4 added possibility to save the map and displayed sunrise and sunset times. The user could select decimal or sexagesimal representation from the default menu and also switch between azimuth origin north/south.
Version 3.5 computes directly the sunrise and sunset times by clicking on icons on the screen and produces a new data table. Sunset and sunrise may be calculated for the sun center in the horizon without refraction or the upper limb touching the horizon with refraction. Also decimal/sexagesimal switching is handled by clicking icons on the screen. A bug in the conversion decimal to sexagesimal routine is fixed. Balloon help is included under system 7.0. A more sophisticated About Planet dialog is added.
You should use a system 6.0.7 or later although it seems that 6.0.3 also works. The application has been tested on MacPlus, Classic, ClassicII, LC, LCII, IIcx, IIci, IIfx, and Quadra.

I got a request for this, so I'm sending it.

Cap'n Magneto is an OLD Macintosh game by Al Evans.  It was written
when the Mac Plus was still the top of the (Mac) heap, MacinTalk
worked, and Inside Macintosh had no more than 4 volumes!  Gods.  That
there were such days is almost beyond imagining.

Anyway, Cap'n Magneto is a graphical adventure-type game where you
wander around, eat apple, influence people (by killing them, etc),
rob robots, suck up to Smiley faces (or is it the other way around?),
and in general just have a heck of a time.

This is aggressive shareware, from what I remember.  It interrupts
the game occasionally to try to get you to send away some money.
Of course, I have no idea if Al Evans is still around.  For all I
know he could be dead.  So it might not be -possible- to send money
in now.  Hey Al, say something!  Do you exist?  If not, should they
send the money to me?  Hey, I -saved- a copy, right? <grin>

I archived this game back in 1988, so it's in a Stuffit 1.5.1 archive.

I just tried running it on my 4MB Macintosh SE running System 7.0up,
and it seemed to run.  I could tell it was a little upset at the
beginning, but it ran for about 5 minutes w/o crashing, and I only
got killed twice.  Oh, and made a save file which restored just fine.

I have no idea what other machines this game will run on.  I expect
that owners of the 128K, 512K, 512Ke, and Plus already have copies of
this game.  If they don't, they should.  It -should- run on those
machines.  Macintosh II series?  LC series?  Quadra?  Heck, anything
with a different screen than the original Macs is questionable.  Try
it and get back to me.  I'll make a list of what it works on, and with
what system software.

One thing I can say for this game, and Dungeon of Doom, is that I blew
a lot of time in college on these things, so Freshbeings Beware!!!

SpeedyFinder7 v1.5.3 - additional release notes

Important Information - read this!

I initially released v1.0 to 1.4 locally within the Sydney region. Version 1.5
was uploaded to sumex-aim and has since gone all over the world. This has
completely taken me aback. The InterNet was a completely foreign concept to me.
I am still learning how to use a UNIX OS and failing miserably.

I understand that people were having trouble getting bug reports to me because
they saw no recognisable InterNet address. I hope that the new document fixes
this problem as I have provided two InterNet addresses (the second actually
mails AppleLink). Thus instead of users complaining madly over the network and
not doing anything about it, you can hassle me (but not all at once about the
same problem, please).

I think you should also know that this Control Panel was originally an Extension
without an interface. I only put that interface in for my benefit. In fact, the
whole idea was really written for my benefit. Despite the fact that many users
complained that v1.5.2 did not work with other applications and caused dialogue
boxes to be misplaced, those problems never occurred during its development on
my Macintosh (they still don't). I also think you should know that I am in no
way obliged to fix those problems that I had never encountered. But because I'm
such a nice guy :-) I have chosen to do so and to implement ideas suggested by
other people as well. I call this support for you. How about you show some
support for me and send that recommended fee of Aus$20.00 to me?

On a lighter note, it is week 9 of 15 of the second semester for me. I will be
overloaded with examination pressure in the coming 6 weeks. However, I will
continue to support this product (assuming you support me; and why not because
this is such a RcoolS Control Panel) and will also continue to reply to mail for
the next three weeks. After that, I will enter examination wind-up and may or
may not choose to reply to mail. You can continue to send me mail and I will log
it and reply after the completion of my examinations (early November). Sorry,
that's just the way it is! That period will be about 5 weeks duration. If the
bug is urgent then label it so, but don't abuse that privilege!

If you are installing this over an older version, please do not open the Control
Panel before you restart (or hassle with mail about bugs if you have). You
should restart before opening the new versions Control Panel. This is because I
haven't implemented a separate preferences file yet.

I hope that this version addresses most if not all of the conflicts and problems
that people have been reporting to me (which by the way I do thank you guys
for). That's the reason for the lengthy delay in release. Also, if you've
received advice from me or from somebody else to switch to 32-bit mode to solve
the dialogue box problem, that's no longer necessary in this release. You can
switch back to 24-bit mode. If there's an idea you would like to see implemented
and I haven't done so then continue to hassle me. Also, if there's a problem I
haven't fixed then bug me, or my bugs will bug you!

This is the SpinCursor library, AGAIN ... UGH.

Some of you may have already noticed there was no protection against
installing more than once, and so the cursor jumped all over the place
before finally dying a horribly yucky death.  I installed a global variable
called gCursInstalled, and this will fix it; now you can call
BeginSpinning() and StopSpinning() without worry as to what will happen.

Some notes for first-time users (read: people unaware of what a VBL task
can do)

o  VBL-based spinning cursors will probably continue to spin even after the
   Macintosh has crashed.  During true Mac crashes, however, the cursor
will
   not MOVE anywhere, it will just spin.  Good? Bad? You be the judge.

o  It would be a nice gesture for you to call StopSpinning() if you receive
   a suspend event, and then BeginSpinning() (if necessary) when you
receive
   the resume event.  Otherwise, you may be "giving the gift of spinning
love"
   to other processes; this is defined in the dictionary as "NOT NICE".

o  Before you allow a user to quit your program, you should issue a
   StopSpinning() just to be on the safe side.  Otherwise, the VBL will
   remain in memory, and it will attempt to JMP to a CODE which is no
longer

o  Some people are very, very accute, and they have noticed some small
flicker
   in the spinning cursors.  This is because the calls to SetCursor are NOT
   always called in sync with the actual monitor vertical retrace.  I will

   working on this; in the mean time, it's just a SMALL flicker, more
noticeable
   on machines with nice big 16" screens.

o  Okay, here's the scoop: SetCursor DOES NOT MOVE MEMORY under these
   conditions. SetCCursor MIGHT, however. Nobody at Apple was willing to
try
   and put a color example into the new Inside Macintosh line of books, so
I
   thought OK, I will.  According to someone who sounds like they know, the
   color cursor call has a 0.1% chance of failing.  I say, Hell...   I lock
   everything and do the best job I can of keeping things from moving. I
guess
   with something as sick as a VBL, anything can happen; but I say it's
safe.

    This archive contains sounds recorded in a 3:1
compression ratio using Sample Editor.  The sounds were recorded
using the built in sound input on a Mac IIsi, and I think that
you'll find that they are of good quality (for using the built
in mic).  I have found that because of Sample Editors compression
format, the sounds only work under System 7.0 and higher; sorry for
any inconveniences this may cause.

This StuffIt archive contains the MacBinary application and a MacWrite
document.  Some methods of downloading MacBinary files (FTP to a Mac,
for example) can only download to the data fork of the Macintosh file.
The MacBinary program will translate such data files into their correct
components (info,data,rsrc).  There is an Upload feature to translate a
Mac file into a MacBinary data file, suitable for uploading via FTP.

The True MacBinary setting is for the case of catenating the three
pieces of a MacBinary file on unix into one text file prior to
downloading.  With some versions of xbin and macget, the resulting forks
on unix are not padded out to the 128 byte blocks that the MacBinary
standard specifies.  Turning True MacBinary off will handle this case.
The MacBinary utility will only create True MacBinary II files for
Uploading, regardless of the True MacBinary setting.  The Delete after
Download setting will delete the input data file after successfully
translating it to a Macintosh file.

This is version 1.0.1.

I spent the long weekend cursing at the AppleEventManager
trying to get the finder to open a control panel. Anyway,
one of the things I discoverd was that the alias manager will
give you a path name if you ask for it. Since my program needed to
display the path name, I wrote a function that will return a full
path name in a handle (not in a str255 so you it won't crash with long
path names) when you give it a fsspec.

I also figured out how to get the finder to open a control panel.
You need to send an open selection event. I finally found an example that
worked and ported it to pascal. If you would like to see that code I can
post it here also. Its a direct copy of C.K Han's C code that is on the
developers CD.

Cubist is a pseudo-screen saver designed exclusively for people using
small screen macintoshes, large screen users should ignore this
submission. There are two versions, FKEY and application, both
of which show  3D objects bouncing around on your screen. This newer
version of Cubist also has a special interstellar mode which allows
you to play dice with the universe. The new version also has far
smoother graphics. Programmers who are interested in learning about
3D graphics might also be interested in the source code, which is
available from the author.

The Colour Text Package supports coloured text in HyperCard fields.
Text may either be coloured using the original 8 QD colours or the full
RGB range. Also included is an external for the standard Colour Picker
dialog.

This package compliments other packages which provide colour in
HyperCard (Colorize HC, HyperTint, Pictoid Package, Apple QT XCMDs) by
providing a simple low-memory usage way of adding colour to fields.  A
short overview of the other packages is included for reference.

Subject: Reset ADB -- Fix 'frozen trackball' problem

This program, which I wrote quite some time ago, fixes a problem I
understand was somewhat common to people with multiple devices on
their ADB ports.

Sometimes, when the Mac is booted, the mouse, trackball, or keyboard
(sometimes two of the three, rarely all three) refused to work.  At
first, my only recourse was to reboot the machine.  Finally, while
playing with Think Reference (An excellent _Inside Mac_ -style utility
from Symantec), I found out about the ResetADB system call.  So, I
wrote a tiny program to call this function, which reset the ADB,
reloading the device driver for the trackball.

Two caveats:  I have since found out that resetting the ADB is a _BAD
THING_ on some older SE machines, which had a bug in their ROMs
relating to the ADB.  The system patched it, but after the bus was
reset, the patch was cleared...

Also, you might ask how one could launch this program if the mouse (or
trackball, or both) didn't work.  Answers: FinderKeys (or something)
in System 6 from Now Utilities 2.x (or so I'm told)and System 7.x.x
both give you the ability to make a selection via the keyboard.  So,
use the arrow keys to select it, & hit command-O.

This program is freeware.  Share and Enjoy.  All I ask is that if you
find it useful, try to let me know.  Redistribution is allowed, as
long as I am credited.  All rights reserved.  This product has no
warranty, and much disclaimer.  I hope you never need it.  But if you
do, here it is.

One last point:  The icon took longer to design than the program did

What is EasyTransfer?

of time which EasyTransfer eliminates. EasyTransfer is extremely
simple. It has no particularly fancy  user interface and apart from
sending or receiving files thereUs not a lot to it. This is quite
deliberate. It is meant to provide a *simple* and *quick* way of
transferring files without the need for an elaborate setup and many
configuration files. There is no need for special servers (eg. POP
hosts) or UNIX services. Absolutely no knowledge of networks etc.
is required. Users should be able to get it up and running in at
most ten minutes. Users who seek compatibility with Unix, or Mac e-
mail, should have a look at, for example, Eudora. Also, it is not
meant to substitute ftp, even though it can be used this way (if
you are looking for a Mac-style ftp client, try Fetch!).


EasyTransfer-Server is the server side. It runs in the background
(unless it is activated) and deals with incoming/outgoing files.
It uses little memory and very little CPU time when sleeping.
Clients who wish to transfer/deposit  files must have an account
(with optional password).  There is the possibility of an
TanonymousU login, which or may not be enabled. The TownerU of the
server may add/delete registered users at will.

EasyTransfer is the client. It is only run when you want to
transfer some files. You may transfer files to more than one
machine at a time (up to 30). The server is not required just to
drop/read files on some other machine (provided the other machine
has the server running, of course!).


System Requirements

EasyTransfer and EasyTransfer-Server require system software 6 or
higher and MacTCP. I have not tested it on MacPlus or older, but
would like to hear whether it runs/doesnUt run on older machines.

Limitations

EasyTransfer is not meant to be a substitute for e-mail etc. It certainly makes
no attempt to create a sophisticated Mac based mail system. It is merely
providing a quick and easy means of sharing files.

(with optional password).  There is the possibility of an
TanonymousU login, which or may not be enabled. The TownerU of the
server may add/delete registered users at will.

EasyTransfer is the client. It is only run when you want to
transfer some files. You may transfer files to more than one
machine at a time (up to 30). The server is not required just to
drop/read files on some other machine (provided the other machine
has the server running, of course!).


System Requirements

EasyTransfer and EasyTransfer-Server require system software 6 or
higher and MacTCP. I have not tested it on MacPlus or older, but
would like to hear whether it runs/doesnUt run on older machines.

Limitations

EasyTransfer is not meant to be a substitute for e-mail etc. It certainly makes
no attempt to create a sophisticated Mac based mail system. It is merely
providing a quick and easy means of sharing files.

in MacOS.  It displays a histogram of CPU load, averaged over the past
minute, and updated every five seconds.  It runs very smoothly, and
hogs *very* little CPU time itself.  Useful for keeping tabs on your
system's performance.

Version 1.4 has these improvements over 1.3:
  - Added the ability to display a figure after the decimal point in the
      load number.
  - Made the Prefs load/save mechanism more reliable.
  - Fixed a bug which would prevent the window size from rescaling if the
      load crept above several hundred.

sort of optical-illusion look.

Well...wouldn't want a week to pass without a FAQ, would I??  I've checked
the list of FAQs and found no reference..so here goes:  I have dropped the
$40 and purchased an external SCSI cable for my Pwbk 170 and now have my
Rodime 210e drive hummin' away.  The question is, how do I best park the
heads and shut down this drive for travel.  When it was hooked to my
"stationary" Mac, the heads were simply parked automatically at shutdown.
I'm curious if this is still the case (I am,of course, running system 7)
and if I simply switch it off after the Pwbk shuts down.

As a follow-up (sounds like a political press conference, eh?), what is the
status of the drive if I unmount it from the desktop by dragging it's icon
to the trash.  If I were to turn it off after unmounting, would I court
head-media problems?  Is any of this brand specific?

Oh, BTW,..this is not in my manual..

Fetch is a MacTCP-based FTP client for the Mac developed
by Dartmouth College.  It is freely available for educational and
non-profit use, and users in for-profit settings can license a copy
for $25 (see the About box for details).

Version 2.1 includes the following new features:

* New menu layout.
* View File and View File List commands (with searching and printing).
* All windows are resizeable and size/position is remembered.
* "Post-processing": Fetch can be configured to automatically
open various file types with specific applications.  This is one way to get

You can also auto-open GIF files, run SEAs, etc.  This feature requires
System 7.0.

Glypha II requires a 13" monitor set at 4-bit display depth.
This is the freeware color sequel to jc's famous black & white
game.  Combat flying sphinxes in an Egyptian temple, but beware
the acid pool, the Evil Eye, and the Mummy's Hand.  Destroy eggs
before they hatch into new sphinxes for bonus points.

Glypha II is compatible with System 7.  (I don't know if it's
Quadra cache compatible.)

fingertips.  Rather than having to get out the sound control
panel, you simply hold down some modifier keys (user-defined)
and click in the menu bar.  Volume menu is so convenient
that I use it all the time.

It has been used by me (author) for about the last nine months
on various machines including a Quadra700 and has never caused
any problems.

Volume menu is almost identical in interface to MacBrightness
(another of our products) - a utility for adjusting screen

Purple X's Moria for the Macintosh v1.0. (UMoria 5.5.0)

A Single Player Dungeon Simulation Game by Robert Alan Koeneke and James Wilson. Macintosh port by Richard Knuckey ([e-mail])

This  is the the second major release of my port of Moria. New features in this version over v1.0b2 include patches to bring the game up to UMoria 5.5.0 from 5.4.0, a few misfeatures fixed, a few down-right bugs fixed and more menu items actually do something. For more details see the Read Me.

Included is a Manual by Jim Wilson and a literary transcript of a game by David Grabiner. Source code for UMoria is avaliable via FTP and was recently posted to comp.sources.games. Source incorperating this port, the colour code and the Archimedes port will be avaliable soon.

So sorry Bill, the previous upload may have gone awry.  When I downloaded
the file I got a self-extracting archive as expected, but it wouldn't open
because of an error of type -39 (end of file!), this despite my having
tested everything before the original upload.  I hope this replacement
works - maybe you could test it if you're not too snowed under?
The author's source code is included, as I omitted to say last time.
Hopefully I don't have to resubmit my blurb!
Once again, sorry for the inconvenience caused.  If these errors happen
quite frequently and you have some idea why, let us know and I'll watch

 Mishu-Wuhan Demo 2.0 is a DA and extension with a set of fonts that allow one
to paste Chinese characters as text or pictures into other applications such
as Microsoft Word, MacWrite, Hypercard, Word Perfect or any application that
accepts Apple's standard Styled Text or Pict clipboards. Chinese Word or
MacWrite documents can be imported into PageMaker and QuarkExpress. It will
work under System 6.0.7 or 7 and best of all, you do not need to have Apple's
ChineseTalk System installed! Printing is very slow on postscript
laserprinters, but only slightly longer than normal on quickdraw printers
such as the Imagewriter, LaserWriter LS, Sytlewriter. Faxing documents is
also quite fast. The method of character selection is similar to ChineseTalk
via pinyin. The only difference bewtween this demo and the full version is
only the characters up to the pinyin "feng" are here.

The DA will not work properly unless both the fonts and extension are
installed and the System restarted. The demo guide is in Word Format.
You can open it with MacWrite, Microsoft Word or any other word processor
that can handle that format by first opening the application and selecting
Open from the file menu. Choose the Guide when the get file dialog appears.
Instructions on ordering the full version are included in the READ ME
FIRST document and demo guide.


Mishu was given a four and a half mice rating by MacUser magazine in 1989.

I have tried adding a Quit menu to the Finder and installing Quit Finder
and Start Finder FKeys but I have found the easiest and cleanest approach
is to use the application Anti-Finder. It is no longer in the archives, so
a resubmission follows.

To rebuild a System 7 DeskTop without restarting, you would launch
Anti-Finder (which will quit Finder), then hold down the Command and
Option keys while selecting Quit in Anti-Finder (this will restart Finder
and ask if you want to rebuild the DeskTop).

Here is Anti-Finder 1.0.1.  Anti-Finder is a teeny-weeny application that
causes the Finder to quit when you run it, and restarts the Finder when
you quit it.

System 7.0 or greater and also free.

This Hypercard 2 stack is designed for scientists working with yeast (S.
cerevisiae) and having more than a few strains. The stack is devised for a
storage format of 10x10 strains per box. A version designed for boxes of
8x8  is also available.

Besides some bug-fixes from vers. 1.0, vers. 1.2 is several times faster
displaying the individual strains. Those of you who have already built a
strain collection using vers. 1.0 or 1.1 of my stack can e-mail me for an
updater, which installs the 1.2  improvements without messing up the
strains already in the collection.

For each strain, mutant alleles are entered by choosing from a list,
alternative strain names, origin, plasmids and other commentary can be
stored in addition. Diploid  strains can be entered by “mating”. Strains
can be extracted quickly by searching for the presence or absence of
mutant alleles, or for other criteria. Search results can be printed or
exported as text files.

tracking program for the Mac.  It allows you to plot the position of
any satellite, including a real-time graphical display.  It does quite
a few other things of interest to hams/SWL's - it calculates beam
headings, grid locators, line-of-sight distance to the horizon, MUF
(maximum usable frequency) predictions, wavelengths/harmonics, and
even shows a couple of simple dipole designs.

This is version 1.01, which fixes a couple of bugs in 1.0 which
prevented some functions from working on some Macs.

Requires Mac Plus or better, System 6.0 or better.  Shareware $20.

The enclosed elements file should be placed in your system or
preferences folder before you launch SatTrak. It is accurate as of
8/28/92.  If you have more recent orbital elements, feel free to use
them, of course.

Here's the latest version of ToggleSndVol FKEY (4.0.2).

The purpose of the FKEY is to quickly and elegantly change the speaker volume.
We all know what a pain in the butt it is to go to the control panel and
change it from there, so I wrote this utility to change it in the blink of an
eye.  After activating the FKEY (usually by command-shift-7), a little window
pops up with a row of buttons numbered 0 to 7.  Click or type the number to
set the volume.  That's it!

Included is an installer (no need for ResEdit) and Think C source

This is version 1.5 of Strip-Mac! -- a slightly risque computer-moderated
card game for two or more adult players. Extensive online documentation can
be found under the application's apple-menu.

Briefly, the game plays as follows: Players take turns in drawing a card
from the deck. If a player fails to turn up an appropriate card then s/he
must choose between options that include:
    (a) removing a piece of clothing;
    (b) taking a punishment card; and
    (c) purchasing a reward card.

Play continues until one or all players are naked. What happens next is up
to you. Version 1.5 includes new functionality and bug-fixes. Enjoy, and

    I found this qt movie at ftp.apple.com in /pub/pugh/quicktime.
I downloaded it as macbinary and converted it with mcvert to binhex (1.6
megs binhexed, 1.2 mb file).  Since qt doesn't compress to well and I'm at
2400 baud for the next three weeks, I didn't compress it (savings on unix
compress was under 1%).  If it's a problem, you may want to convert it.
    This is the now famous Simpsons scene responding to Bush's
snub.  It shows Bush's "more like the Walton's and less like the
Simpsons" line and Bart's "waiting for the depression to end" retort.
    Enjoy!

  In Microcosm, you pilot a microscopic robot around a maze while trying to
destroy  the nasty viruses that are trying to destroy you. In order to kill a
specific type of virus,  you must shoot at it with a specially encoded strand
of DNA. You can either rely on trial and error to find the correct DNA
sequence, or you can pick up the computer chips that appear in the maze. These
chips add functions to your robot and may make it easier to kill the viruses.
Meanwhile, the viruses' DNA sequences can change due to mutation, and enemy
robots roam the maze, performing such helpful tasks as knocking down the walls
or trying to steal your computer chips.
  The Microcosm demo runs in monochrome or color and requires at least system
6.0.7. There is online help contained within the demo. Note that since this is
a demo, some functions have been disabled. For the nominal fee of $15, you can
get the full version which includes  network functions, more levels and a way
cool level editor. See the demo for more details.

Version 1.0.1 fixes a minor bug involving applications that put up modal
dialogs while they are in the background. (Which is completely
egregious, and we resent having to hack around it.  :-)

The short description: Okey Dokey presses the default button in modal
dialogs after a time limit.

The somewhat longer description: This is something that we have wanted
to have for a long time. Have you ever typed command-P then tromped
across campus to pick up your nice 300dpi output, only to wait and wait
and wait while nothing comes out of the printer?  When you return to
your office, there's your mac, politely asking how many copies you would
like.

This is a little INIT/CDEV that automatically chooses the default button
in a modal dialog box after a specified amount of time. The control
panel lets you set the time and specify if you want a little countdown
display in the lower lefthand corner of the modal dialog box.

Everything in this archive is in the public domain. You may do anything you
want with them.

This folder contains misc MPW tools for converting to and from various formats.
I've collected these tools from Usenet over the years. Some of them I converted
to MPW tools, others were MPW tools already, but needed a little work to compile
with MPW C 3.2. The makefile is for building with MPW 3.2; you'll have to change
the libs= line to build with MPW 3.1.

The tools are:

atob, btoa
        converts to and from btoa format used on Unix
join
        a tool to join multi-part postings; this used to be a shell script
        and is now much faster. Also handles btoa'ed and uuencoded files
        from various mail servers.
mcompress
        from Gail Zacharias: reads and generates Unix compress files;
        I added a -u option for doing CR<->LF conversions (useful for
        decoding compressed shar files). (The -d option decompresses;
        a useful alias is: Alias uncompress 'mcompress -d'.)
mtar, muntar
        from Gail Zacharias: reads and generates Unix tar format files.

uuencode
        encodes and decodes uuencode files used on Unix. Original by
        Pete Gontier. I added a -u option for doing CR<->LF conversions.
unshar
        decodes Unix shar files. Original code by Amanda Walker. This can
        be built as a standalone appl by Think C or as an MPW tool. Both
        the Think C project file and MPW make file is provided.
xbin
        converts binhexed files used on comp.binaries.mac

All the tools read standard input and can be used in combination. For example,

    join parts.[1-5] | atob | mcompress -d -u | unshar

Description:

System 7's drop-launching features are a nice idea, but
there is a catch: in order to drop documents onto an
application, you need to have the application on the
desktop, or in some other open window.  This one problem is
probably the single greatest impediment to realizing the
full potential of drop-launching.  In the past, you had
basically two choices: either fill up your desktop with an
array of various application icons, to keep them available
for drop-launching, or keep your desktop clean, and limit
your use of drop-launching to rare occasions.

LaunchPad changes all that.

LaunchPad is a simple utility designed to let you keep a
clean desktop, but still maintain convenient access to
System 7's drop-launching features.  LaunchPad serves as a
drag-and-drop dock for any applications that you choose.
You simply drag documents to the LaunchPad icon, and then
select an application to launch from the "get file" dialog.
The dropped documents will then be opened using the selected
application (if possible).

With LaunchPad, you keep your desktop clean and take
advantage of System 7's drop-launching.  LaunchPad also
provides a drop-printing feature.

So why use drop-launching or LaunchPad?  If this question
comes to mind, then you are probably one of the many people
who have yet to experience just how convenient drop-
launching can be.  Drop-launching makes many tasks much
easier.  See the enclosed documentation for useful examples.


Specifications:

LaunchPad requires approximately 25K of disk space, and 40K
of RAM.


Changes from version 1.1.3:

LaunchPad now:

  --supports Continuous operation, in addition to Single-use
    operation,

  --supports drop-printing,

  --provides two default folders, the Main folder and the
    Alternate folder,

  --recognizes applications (in addition to aliases) in the
    LaunchPad dialog,

  --uses a preference file (stored in the standard
    "Preferences" folder),

  --uses an enlarged dialog that will display up to 16
    applications (aliases) simultaneously,

  --uses temporary memory to allow more files, folders, and
    disks to be batch-dropped onto LaunchPad without the need
    to increase LaunchPad's partition size,

  --supports dropping disks and folders onto applications.

LaunchPad will no longer post an alert when an already-
running target application fails to open dropped documents.
Unfortunately, it has been difficult to find a reliable
method for recognizing this situation.  Perhaps this will be
added in a future version.

MacStardate is a Mac app that puts up and maintains in the background a

partition. Version 1.0.1 replaces 1.0; it fixes a bug that affected
background window updates.

downloaded font-preview, you're probably wasting a lot of time downloading
fonts you don't want.

Desktop Textures 2.0, including Textures Volume I and II

Desktop Textures includes 53 textures which it can install in your system
as the desktop pattern.  Unlike other programs of this type, it does not
require an Extension or Control Panel to be placed in the System Folder.
We've tried to include smooth desktop "textures" which are suitable for
long-term use, and keep distracting, "busy" patterns to a minimum.  Our
textures can add considerably to the perception of depth on your desktop.
There are even several which can be viewed (Stare-E-O style) as true
three-dimensional patterns.

Most of the new textures look good even on black and white screens,
although 256 color (8 bit) screens show the true nature of the textures
much better.  32 bit video makes them look vibrant.

Installing a texture with this program is much like using the General Control
Panel, and you can revert at any time to the normal 8-by-8 patterns.

The Desktop Textures Installer version 2.0 has been entirely redesigned.
It is now a modeless application which stores its textures in separate
texture resource files and allows you to create textures of your own.
The texture picker window is now full-color (on color screens), and
detailed on-line help is included.  Although the program works under
System 6, System 7 users will be able to take advantage of significant
improvements, as well as the standard System 7 features, such as Apple
Event support.  Full on-line help is available, including System 7
balloon help.

This program is System 6, System 7, and A/UX compatible.  Anyone with
Color QuickDraw can use this program.  This includes all Macintoshes
with a 68020 or better -- the SE/30 and Classic II on up.  (System 6
users may need to place the 32-bit Color Quickdraw extension in their
System Folder -- 32-bit QuickDraw is required for the new textures.)

The attached is the shareware program McHurricane, downloaded the other day
>From America Online. It was written by William Chenault, and has a $25 SW
fee -- this version has an "Unregistered Copy" overprint on the maps;
paying the SW fee gets a copy of the latest version with the overprinting
removed.
It requires System 6.0.5 and a Mac Plus to run; 32-bit QD is required for
proper color display, and 256 color mode is recommended for best results.

I've had a number of bus errors while using this, but have not yet tried to
track down the source of the conflict; I'm sending this in anyway so others
can use it if they don't have any problems.

This file contains macstardate.sit.hqx, a binhexed Stuffit 1.5.1 archive
which contains MacStardate and its Readme file.  MacStardate is a simple
app that puts up a window in which it displays the current stardate, as
calculated by Jay Windley's stardate.c.  It is Sys7 friendly, and as far
as I know runs on Color and noncolor machines. I have done limited
testing due to limited machine access; any bug reports welcome at
[e-mail].  Enjoy!

Someone asked me to upload the free translator for AFE that
Microsoft produced.  This translator will supposedly convert
AppleWorks documents to MS Works docs.  I don't know if it
will handle the databse or spreadsheet portions or not.  I
have been informed that this particular translator will only
handle documents of up to 20k in size (I have not verified
that myself).  It would have been posted sooner, but I had
to check with Microsoft to make sure it was OK to post it.
They said enjoy!

compression ratio using Sample Editor.  The sounds were recorded
using the built in sound input on a Mac IIsi, and I think that
you'll find that they are of good quality (for using the built
in mic).

Someone sent me mail recently looking for my ShareWare program TIGER, which
used to be in the info-mac archives. Was its removal deliberate? If it was
accidental, then here is a resubmittal of the program.

This file contains a binhexed stuffit archive of TIGER, version 1.1. Version
1.1 fixes a bug in processing multiple uuencoded files per source file.  It
also now handles the files created by the CC:Mail and Microsoft Mail gateways
(the program was originally tested with AppleLink only). TIGER is Shareware.

TIGER can decode uuencoded files (a popular file encoding technique for UNIX
systems). It also can decode AppleSingle files (a format for storing Macintosh
files on other computer systems). To use TIGER, simply choose Extract from the
File menu and select a file to extract enclosures from. Any enclosed files will
be extracted and put in the same folder as the original file. The original file
is not modified.

Uuencoded files should have file type TEXT and AppleSingle files should have
file type BINA (binary). If extracting from a uuencoded file produces an
AppleSingle file, the AppleSingle file is automatically decoded to produce the
final Macintosh file. This feature makes TIGER ideal for retrieving files from
Internet mail messages created by the Internet gateways for CC:Mail, Microsoft
Mail, AppleLink, and possibly QuickMail (I haven't tested QuickMail).

Note: Most enclosures on AppleLink are compressed package files, which require
the AppleLink software in order to be expanded. A future version of TIGER might
do this automatically -- registered TIGER users that have paid the $5 shareware
fee will receive substantial discounts on any future commerical version.

Subject: PICMeUp - Updated


    This version of PICMeUp fixes a couple of very minor bugs
and adds the capability of dismounting the file's volume.  It
won't be a "best-seller", but has found use in some student
labs around the world.

    PICMeUp is a small utility that reads its STR resources for
the pathname of a file, gets a PICT and snd from the file, and
displays the PICT and plays the sound.  It can also dismount the
volume containing the file.
    PICMeUp is used in our student lab.  Each time a student
boots a floppy or hard disk Mac, they get a screenful of message.
Graphics, text, and sound are used because they just don't read
the signs on the door...

    Included is a Word document for setting it up.  If you can't
read it, send me e-mail and request another format.

    PICMeUp is ChocolateWare:  If you like it, send me some
bittersweet or semi-sweet chocolate.
