  5. CD-ROM / Video Performance Problems
  6. =================================================================

  8. NOTE: To avoid damage to the CD-ROM, do not remove it from
  9. your CD-ROM drive while it is in use (usually indicated by
  10. a light on the CD-ROM drive).
  11.  
  12. You might be able to enhance video playback performance in a number
  13. of ways:
  14.  
  15. 1.  Use a smaller video window by selecting Fast Movie (or Video)
  16. playback from the Options menu of the application.
  17.  
  18. 2.  Increase the amount of buffer memory that your CD-ROM driver 
  19. software uses.  Most computers communicate with the CD-ROM drive 
  20. through the Microsoft MSCDEX driver.  Such systems can sometimes
  21. be accelerated by adding /M:64 to the MSCDEX entry in your 
  22. AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  See your CD-ROM documentation for more details.

  24. 3.  Ensure that you are using the latest video driver for your 
  25. video board.  Contact your video board manufacturer for more 
  26. information.  You might also be able to get updated drivers from 
  27. CompuServe in either the Microsoft forum or in a forum managed by 
  28. your video board manufacturer.  Also see the \DRIVERS directory
  29. on this CD-ROM for a number of Microsoft-provided video drivers.

  31. 4.  Check Windows Setup (usually in the Main group of the 
  32. Windows Program Manager) to ensure that you are using a 256 
  33. color video driver.  Video playback is slower in both 16 color
  34. mode and any video mode with more than 256 colors.  Video 
  35. performance might also be improved by running Windows in 640 by 480 
  36. resolution if you are currently using a higher resolution.

  39. Video Display Problems
  40. =================================================================

  42. 1.  16 color mode
  43. This application runs in 16 color mode but, due to the full-motion
  44. video playback, we strongly suggest using a 256 color video mode.
  45. Many computers are factory-set to a 16 color mode although the video
  46. board is capable of 256 colors.  The setup program should correctly
  47. warn you if you are in 16 color mode and suggest a remedy.

  49. 2.  ATI video boards
  50. This product is incompatible with some features of the ATI
  51. Mach32 video system.  This video board comes with a number of
  52. popular systems including most Gateway 2000 machines.  The problem is 
  53. not with the board itself but with the Mach32 video driver software
  54. so it can be resolved in at least two different ways (note that
  55. suggestion #1 will provide the best performance):
  56.  
  57. A.  Run the ATI Control Panel application that comes with your
  58. video board.  
  59.     i.  Ensure that you are running in the 256 color mode.
  60.     ii.  Click Advanced Features and ensure that the 256 Color
  61.         Palette option is turned ON.  See the ATI documentation
  62.         for more details.

  64. B.  From the Windows Setup application, choose a different video 
  65. driver such as the 8514/a driver.  See your ATI documentation 
  66. for more details.

  69. Audio Problems
  70. =================================================================
  71.  
  72. This application requires that an MPC-compatible sound board 
  73. is installed in order to play sound.  It will not function with
  74. software that uses the computer's internal speaker to generate 
  75. sound (such as "PC Speaker").  Such software will usually
  76. not play any sounds but could cause your system to crash.
  77.  
  78. To resolve other audio problems:
  79.  
  80. 1.  Make sure that the volume for your speakers is set to an 
  81. audible level.
  82.  
  83. 2.  Your sound board may be set up incorrectly if you still do not 
  84. hear any audio.  Check to see that the audio driver that came
  85. with your sound board is installed correctly and, if necessary, 
  86. reinstall it.  See the documentation that came with your sound
  87. board for more details.

  90. "Out of Memory" Problems
  91. =================================================================
  92.  
  93. This application uses your computer's memory to display 
  94. pictures and video.  Performance will be degraded if your system
  95. does not have enough free memory.  If you receive Out-Of-Memory 
  96. errors, you probably do not have enough free memory. Consider 
  97. doing the following:
  98.  
  99. 1.  Close all unnecessary applications.
  100.  
  101. 2.  If you are running Windows in Enhanced mode (the default mode
  102. if you are running Windows on a 386 or better machine), create a 
  103. permanent swap file on your hard disk.  See your Windows 
  104. documentation details.
