Bookshelf package before calling.
WORD PROCESSOR SUPPORT
Microsoft Bookshelf is fully compatible with the following word processors:
Microsoft Word, versions 2.0, 3.0, 3.1, 3.11, 4.0
Word Perfect, version 4.2
Multimate Advantage, version I
IBM Display Write III
Volkswriter 3
XyWrite III and III Plus
PC Write, version 2.71
Additional word processors listed in the Bookshelf User's Guide are not
fully supported.
Microsoft Bookshelf is a memory resident program that is loaded into memory
before your word processor or other application and that communicates with
your word processor. In some modes and operations of word processors,
communication is not possible and some of Bookshelf's functions will be
disabled.
GENERAL NOTES
--Bookshelf may behave erratically if it is invoked on top of another
memory-resident program which was also invoked over your word processor.
For best results, only one memory-resident program should be invoked at
a time.
--keyboard enhancement programs (such as Superkey) should be loaded before
Bookshelf is loaded. Other memory-resident programs should be loaded after
Bookshelf has been loaded.
--if the word processor cursor is not in the editing region of the screen
when Bookshelf is invoked, screen checking and replace functions will be
disabled.
--word processors which use special characters for formatting can cause
difficulty with word replacement.
--when performing screen operation on a document, it is recommended that
the document spacing be set to no more than double-space. More than
double-spacing may cause erratic behavior.
--if Bookshelf is invoked over a word processor help screen or system
setup screen, Bookshelf goes into "Unknown" mode. This is indicated
on Bookshelf's title bar, above the main menu bar. In "Unknown" mode,
paste and date stamp are enabled; however, it is strongly advised
that user refrain from attempting to paste into these screens.
--Bookshelf will not spell screen in split window modes of word processors.
Microsoft Word, all versions
--Bookshelf does not detect column mode in Word. If a screen check is
attempted in this mode, unpredictable results will follow.
--attempting to replace a Word keyword (timeprint, dateprint) during the
screen check operation will abort the screen check.
--replace and screen checking functions are disabled in Gallery mode.
--in graphics mode (Word 3.1 and higher), Bookshelf will temporarily turn
off graphics mode while it is popped up. Graphics will be turned on again
when Bookshelf is popped down.
Microsoft Word, version 2.0 and 3.0
--graphics mode not supported. A beep will sound if an attempt is made to
invoke Bookshelf over graphics mode.
Microsoft Word, versions 3.1 and 3.11
--Bookshelf works in graphics mode with no screen checking functions.
Bookshelf will temporarily turn off graphics mode while it is popped
up. Graphics mode will be turned on again when it is popped down.
--Word 43-line mode supported
Microsoft Word, version 4.0
--full support in graphics mode. Bookshelf will temporarily turn off
graphics mode while it is popped up. Graphics mode will be turned on
again when it is popped down.
--Word 43-line mode supported.
Word Perfect, version 4.2
--43-line mode supported.
--it is recommended that hyphenation be turned off when Bookshelf is
pasting into a document.
--when transferring a form into a new document (previously unnamed)
Word Perfect takes the path name from which the form came and uses
this as the name of the document. It is recommended that the name
of the document be changed when the transfer is done.
Multimate Advantage, version I
--Bookshelf operates in black and white when invoked over Multimate.
--when transferring forms, Multimate uses a temporary file created in
the current directory. If the disk is full the form will not be transferred.
--screen checking is disabled when Multimate is in insert mode.
IBM Display Write III
--if Bookshelf is unloaded while Display Write is running, Bookshelf may
not be reloaded again until the computer is re-booted. This only applies
to loading Bookshelf (typing "books" at the DOS prompt).
--Special font characters may cause some difficulty with word replacement.
XyWrite III
--follow the instructions which accompany the XyWrite documentation
for setting up XyWrite to run with memory resident programs. Failure
to do this will cause serious problems if Bookshelf is used with
XyWrite III.
Wordstar Professional 4.0
--Wordstar's special character formatting symbols (^b, for bold, for
example) will be turned off when Bookshelf is invoked. Bookshelf
will turn them back on when it is popped down.
PC Write, version 2.71
--43-line mode supported.
MS DOS Command line
-pasting and replacing are enabled over the command line.
HARDWARE
If you have a Hercules Graphics adapter on your computer and you use
Microsoft Word, you must use Word in character mode (all versions)
if you intend to use Bookshelf.
USING BOOKSHELF WITH A MOUSE
If you use a Microsoft Mouse it is advised that you upgrade your
Microsoft Mouse driver. If you currently use MOUSE.SYS, delete
the MOUSE.SYS you have on your system and replace it with the MOUSE.SYS
which resides on the Bookshelf CD ROM. Likewise, if you use MOUSE.COM,
delete the version you are using with your system and replace it with
the MOUSE.COM which is on the Bookshelf CD ROM.
If you use the Mouse Systems PC Mouse and you experience problems with
mouse behavior in Bookshelf, make sure you are using an MSMOUSE driver
version higher than 4.70. It always recommended that you use the latest
mouse driver software. Check with you mouse manufacturer about getting
an update.
RAMDISK SUPPORT
If you currently have your system setup to run with a RAM disk and
are using IBM's VDISK.SYS as the RAM disk device driver and you use a
serial mouse, it is strongly advised that you switch to using
RAMDRIVE.SYS (shipped on the Bookshelf CD ROM) as your RAM disk
device driver.
To install RAMDRIVE.SYS in place of VDISK.SYS, copy RAMDRIVE.SYS to
the directory which contains VDISK.SYS and substitute the RAMDISK.SYS
for VDISK.SYS in the "DEVICE=" line in your config.sys file.
ZIP CODE
For best results in looking up ZIP Codes in Bookshelf, use the
U. S. Postal Service's conventions for proper addressing. Also use
full street addresses including all directional indicators and proper
abbreviations.
