  9. This document provides information you may find useful in running
  10. Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.0.

  40. INSTALLING PC CARD (PCMCIA) MODEMS

  43. If you are using a PC card (PCMCIA) modem for your Dial-up Networking
  44. connection to the Internet and have not yet installed the modem,
  45. you may have to enable Windows 95 PC card socket support before 
  46. running the Internet Setup wizard.  
  47.  
  48. To enable PCMCIA socket support:
  49.  
  50. 1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click 
  51.    Control Panel.
  52.  
  53. 2. Double-click the PC Card (PCMCIA) icon to start the PC Card 
  54.    Wizard, and then follow the instructions on your screen.
  55.  
  56.    NOTE: If you can't find the PC Card icon, you may need to install 
  57.          the PC card (PCMCIA) drivers. To do this, double-click the 
  58.          Add New Hardware icon, click No, click PCMCIA Support from 
  59.          the list of hardware items, and then follow the instructions 
  60.          on your screen.

  63. USING A LOCAL AREA NETWORK PROXY OR FIREWALL
  64. ============================================
  65.  
  66. If you want to use a proxy or firewall to protect your Local Area 
  67. Network from being accessed by other on the Internet, follow these 
  68. steps:
  69.  
  70. 1. Run the Internet Setup Wizard.
  71.  
  72.    You can run the wizard after by clicking the Start button,
  73.    pointing to Programs, then pointing to Accessories, then
  74.    pointing to Internet Tools, and then double-clicking
  75.    Internet Setup Wizard.
  76.  
  77. 2. Configure your computer to connect to the Internet by using TCP/IP 
  78.    on on your local area network. 
  79.  
  80. 3. When asked for the gateway address, type the address supplied by 
  81.    your network administrator only if your organization uses gateways 
  82.    for routing information over the network.
  83.  
  84.    NOTE: The gateway computer is not the same as the proxy or firewall 
  85.    computer which protects your local area network from the Internet,
  86.    so do not type your proxy or firewall address here.

  88. 4. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control 
  89.    Panel.
  90.  
  91. 3. Click the Internet icon, and then click the Advanced tab.
  92.  
  93. 5. Make sure the Use Proxy Server box is checked.
  94.  
  95. 6. Type the http server address and the port number for the computer 
  96.    you want to use as the proxy server in the Proxy Server box. The 
  97.    following is an example of a proxy server address and port number:

  99.       http://myproxy.mycompany.com:80
  100.  
  101.    In the Bypass Proxy On box, type the names of the computers, 
  102.    domains, and ports on the Internet that, when accessed, will 
  103.    not go through the proxy server. Separate each item you type 
  104.    with a comma.
  105.  
  106.    If you do not know what to type in the Proxy Server, or Bypass 
  107.    Proxy On boxes, see your network administrator. For Help on these 
  108.    items, click the ? in the title bar, and then click the item.

  111. USING PROGRESSIVE NETWORKS' REALAUDIO SUPPORT
  112. =============================================
  113.  
  114. The Microsoft Internet Explorer includes support for Progressive Networks' 
  115. RealAudio. This enables you to listen to audio files in real time over 
  116. a dial-up modem or direct-network Internet connection. To use 
  117. RealAudio, you must have a Windows 95-supported sound card installed 
  118. in your computer. RealAudio works best on 486/33 or faster processors.

  120. To try RealAudio, connect to http://www.realaudio.com.
  121.  
  122. NOTE: RealAudio will not work if your connection is routed through 
  123.       a local area network proxy or firewall.

  126. USING INTERNET EXPLORER WITH VIRTUAL MEMORY
  127. ===========================================

  129. Internet Explorer requires you to use virtual memory. Otherwise, 
  130. Internet Explorer will not run properly. To make sure you are using 
  131. virtual memory:
  132.  
  133. 1. Click the Start button, then point to Settings, and then click 
  134.    Control Panel.
  135.  
  136. 2. Double-click the System icon, and then click the Performance tab.
  137.  
  138. 3. Click the Virtual Memory button.
  139.  
  140. 4. If you are specifying your own virtual memory settings, make 
  141.    sure the Disable Virtual Memory box is unchecked. If this box 
  142.    is checked, then you are not using virtual memory and Internet 
  143.    Explorer won't run.
  144.  
  145.    TIP: You can let Windows manage virtual memory for you by 
  146.         selecting the Let Windows Manage My Virtual Memory 
  147.         Settings option.
