TRACON
A GAME, OR A DEADLY REFLECTION OF REALITY?
- ---- -- - ------ ---------- -- -------
It looks simple - just keep every blip on your scope apart as you vector
them around for aproaches and departures. But they keep coming - pushing
you to your limits! And you alone must prevent a dreaded crash between
airliners loaded with passengers.
TRACON is an air traffic control (ATC) simulation for IBM PC and compatible
microcomputers. TRACON recreates the environment of a real Terminal Radar
Approach CONtrol center located at Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago,
Boston, or Miami.
Here is what some TRACON users have to say:
"I was a nervous wreck after watching the 15 minute demonstration."
- The New York Times
"Now I appreciate what the guys down there gothrough!"
- C.B.Instrument Pilot Magazine
"[TRACON] adds up to hours and hours of enjoyment."
- PCM Magazine
"I recommend it for training our ATC students."
- Air Force Officer
"An absolutely realistic simulation. First class!"
- LAX Controller
"...greatly exceeded my expectations."
- D.S., Colorado
"...stunning VGA graphics!"
- T.S., Wisconsin
"...this game actually talks to you! Great!"
- L.C., Texas
Like the flight simulators, this product enables you to experience the
thrill and tension of an exciting professional environment that otherwise
requires many years of training," said Dr. Robert B. Wesson, the program's
designer and developer of other highly-acclaimed artificial intelligence
software. "A host of FAA personnel and actual controllers have made TRACON
the most complete air traffic control simulation ever created for
microcomputers. So real, in fact, that we do not call it a 'game' even
though it is tremendously challenging and fun to 'play'."
TRACON turns the IBM PC graphics screen into an electronic ATC center
complete with RADARSCOPE, FLIGHTSTRIPS, and COMMUNICATIONS. After you
choose a sector to control, the simulator generates realistic traffic flows
from its store of hundreds of different aircraft types (from Piper Cubs to
Boeing 747 "heavies") and thousands of possible routes of flight along real
airways and radio fixes. Using either the keypad or a mouse, you must
prevent a dreaded mid-air collision while taking each aircraft to its
destination as efficiently as possible through radar vectors, and altitude
or speed assignments. The program awards points for fuel-efficient routings
while subtracting points for near misses, missed approaches, and other
controller mistakes.
Whereas previous ATC games used highly-simplified "toy" sectors with text-
based aircraft, TRACON exploits the full IBM graphics capabilities
(including EGA and VGA) with a full-graphics radar scope filled with FAA-
standard aircraft icons and their leader lines, real airports and their
surrounding geography, radio fixes, and airways. One of the demonstration
scenarios synchronizes with a cassette tape of voice commands (included) to
envelop you in a complete audio/visual experience. In TRACON, as in the
real world, pilots make mistakes, veer off-course, and miss approaches due
to low ceilings. Your job is to keep everything together no matter what
happens up there.
THE NEW VERSION TALKS TO YOU VIA THE PCs SPEAKER. FANTASTIC!
The newest TRACON -- Version 1.5 -- "talks" to you via your computer's
internal speaker -- no special hardware required. You can hear each command
you issue and the pilots' responses over a simulated radio channel just as
you would using any aircraft-band scanner or transceiver. The difference
is: you're in control, not "them."
A fully-functional version of TRACON 1.5 is available immediately from Wild
West Software. It can be purchased for $49.95 plus $6 shipping directly
from the company by calling 1-512-335-3360 or mailing the user registration
card contained in the file ORDER.TXT. The purchase price includes a one-
hundred page manual filled with ATC details and a quick-reference guide, the
software on either 5.25" or 3.5" diskette, and an audio cassette tape
demonstration scenario. It requires an IBM PC or compatible microcomputer,
any graphics adapter and monitor, one disk drive, and DOS 2.0 or higher.
Wild West Software offers an unconditional 30-day money-back guarantee on
the product, and usually ships via UPS 2nd-day air the day after receiving
the order.
==============INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE=================
This demonstration disk should give you a good flavor of TRACON. To see the
demonstration, simply put this disk into the selected drive and type the
word TRACON to DOS. Or copy the files on this disk into a subdirectory on
your hard drive, change to that subdirectory, and type TRACON. The self-
repeating demonstration will take about 15 minutes to complete.
About the only key active during the demo is the Alt-T "talking" toggle key.
Press it once to disable controller talking but leave pilots on; press it
again to disable all talking; and press again to hear both again. To end
the demo and return to the DOS prompt, press Esc or Alt-X anytime during the
demonstration.
The following files should be contained on this demo disk:
TRACON.EXE TRACON.VOI TRACON.INI LAX.SEC
LAX.VOI DEMO.DMO DEMO.SIM READ.ME
You are encouraged to make copies of this disk for your friends,
customers, and acquaintances.
